The essays collected here, from such diverse thinkers as Judith Brine, Joan Kerr, Miles Lewis, Sarah Treadwell, Philip Goad, Julie Willis and Mike Austin, reflect some of the most illuminating debates from these conferences. Together these essays capture a tone of critical inquiry and the conditions of writing architectural history in Australia and New Zealand." Download or read book John Dalton written by Elizabeth Musgrave and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the work of architect John Dalton (1927-2007), an important voice in mid-century modernism in Australia whose work, despite his being exhibited and published internationally and also winning several awards for his designs, is woefully little known. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, the book draws on previously unpublished archival documents, including Dalton's drawings and paintings, transcripts of lectures, letters and articles, plans and photographic images of built works, to characterize the architect not only as a very talented designer, but also as a pioneer of environmentalist thinking in Australia. The book reveals how Dalton's architectural preoccupations parallel a transition in mid-century modern architecture globally from functional efficiency and material rationalism, to a concern with being in dialogue with the environment, confirming a wider 'environmental turn' that involved the integration of environmental with cultural considerations through relational thinking, and which preceded and transcends the discipline's fascination with theoretical paradigms such as Critical Regionalism. John Dalton: Subtropical Modernism and the Turn to Environment in Australian Architecture is thus not only an important contribution to the existing scholarship on 20th century modernism, but also to the current renewed interest in environmental design across the globe.
Book Synopsis Between Duty and Design by : John J. Taylor
Download or read book Between Duty and Design written by John J. Taylor and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2014 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. The architectural work of Joseph John Talbot Hobbs is impossible to overlook in Perth and Western Australia. It dominates public spaces as well as domestic and business streetscapes. A strong sense of duty determined that the diminutive fifty-year-old architect-soldier J.J. Talbot Hobbs would in 1914 voyage to the First World War, where he survived the horrors of Gallipoli and the Western Front. Hobbs' powerful organisational skills positioned him as Australia's highest ranking soldier in Europe after the Great War. Organiser of Australian war memorials in France and Belgium, his stellar designs both there and throughout Western Australia are now largely forgotten. Who was J.J. Talbot Hobbs that he was considered to be of such importance at the time of his death that a memorial was built in one of the most prominent places in the state's capital city of Perth? Between Duty and Design is a meticulous biography of the man: soldier and architect, highlighting his place as a citizen of national importance.
Book Synopsis Consuming Architecture by : Daniel Maudlin
Download or read book Consuming Architecture written by Daniel Maudlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projecting forward in time from the processes of design and construction that are so often the focus of architectural discourse, Consuming Architecture examines the variety of ways in which buildings are consumed after they have been produced, focusing in particular on processes of occupation, appropriation and interpretation. Drawing on contributions by architects, historians, anthropologists, literary critics, artists, film-makers, photographers and journalists, it shows how the consumption of architecture is a dynamic and creative act that involves the creation and negotiation of meanings and values by different stakeholders and that can be expressed in different voices. In so doing, it challenges ideas of what constitutes architecture, architectural discourse and architectural education, how we understand and think about it, and who can claim ownership of it. Consuming Architecture is aimed at students in architectural education and will also be of interest to students and researchers from disciplines that deal with architecture in terms of consumption and material culture.
Download or read book Values in Cities written by James Lesh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining urban heritage in twentieth-century Australia, James Lesh reveals how evolving ideas of value and significance shaped cities and places. Over decades, a growing number of sites and areas were found to be valuable by communities and professionals. Places perceived to have value were often conserved. Places perceived to lack value became subject to modernisation, redevelopment, and renewal. From the 1970s, alongside strengthened activism and legislation, with the innovative Burra Charter (1979), the values-based model emerged for managing the aesthetic, historic, scientific, and social significance of historic environments. Values thus transitioned from an implicit to an overt component of urban, architectural, and planning conservation. The field of conservation became a noted profession and discipline. Conservation also had a broader role in celebrating the Australian nation and in reconciling settler colonialism for the twentieth century. Integrating urban history and heritage studies, this book provides the first longitudinal study of the twentieth-century Australian heritage movement. It advocates for innovative and reflexive modes of heritage practice responsive to urban, social, and environmental imperatives. As the values-based model continues to shape conservation worldwide, this book is an essential reference for researchers, students, and practitioners concerned with the past and future of cities and heritage. Book Synopsis Australian Architecture Now by : Davina Jackson
Download or read book Australian Architecture Now written by Davina Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having just completed the most significant five-year construction phase in the nation's history, Australian architecture has moved into the world spotlight. During the 1994-99 boom creative vigor was palpable, confidence surged and the entire continent became endowed with a new sense of architectural independence. Because it scans a diverse and momentary scene instead of recording a longer continuum of major achievements, Australian Architecture Now is an unusual history book. It presents two essays, 21 case studies of outstanding public and domestic projects, and in several brief chapters compares selected buildings according to similarities of either genre or style. Close examination reveals surprising evidence that Australian architecture more often reflects the personal styles and attitudes of its creators than the poetic ideal of a unique sense of place. Architects featured include Denton Corker Marshall, Harry Seidler, Gabriel Poole, Rex Addison, Peter Stutchbury, Cox Sanderson Ness, Nonda Katsalidis, Sean Godsell, Alexander Tzannes, and more.

Book Synopsis Imhotep Today by : Jean-Marcel Humbert
Download or read book Imhotep Today written by Jean-Marcel Humbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyses the results of the use and adaptation of ancient Egyptian architecture in modern times. It traces the use of ancient Egyptian motifs and constructions across the world, from Australia, the Americas and Southern Africa to Western Europe. It also inquires into the cultural, economic and social contexts of this practice. Imhotep Today is exceptional not only in its global coverage, but in its analyses of thorny questions such as: what was it about Ancient Egypt that inspired such Egyptianizing monuments, and was it just one idea, or several different ones which formed the basis of such activities? The book also asks why only certain images, such as obelisks and sphinxes, were incorporated within the movement. The contributors explore how these 'monuments' fitted into the local architecture of the time and, in this context, they investigate whether 'Egyptianizing architecture' is an ongoing movement and, if so, how it differs from earlier, similar activities.
Book Synopsis Experiments in Modern Living by : Milton Cameron
Download or read book Experiments in Modern Living written by Milton Cameron and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a group of brilliant young scientists arrived in Australia's national capital after World War II to take up leading roles in the establishment of national research institutions, they commissioned Australia's leading architects to design their private houses. The houses that resulted from these unique collaborations rejected previous architectural styles and wholeheartedly embraced modernist ideologies and aesthetics. The story of how these progressive clients contributed to the innovative design of their houses brings fresh insights to mid-twentieth-century Australian domestic architecture and to Canberra's rich cultural history.
