Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Recent Researches in Electricity and Magnetism, Intended as a Sequel: To Professor Clerk-Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism IN the twenty years which have elapsed since the first appearance of Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism great progress has been made in these sciences. This progress has been largely - perhaps it would not be too much to say mainly - due to the influence of the views set forth in that Treatise, to the value of which it offers convincing testimony. In the following work I have endeavoured to give an account of some recent electrical researches, experimental as well as theoretical, in the hope that it may assist students to gain some acquaintance with the recent progress of Electricity and yet retain Maxwell's Treatise as the source from which they learn the great principles of the science. I have adopted exclusively Maxwell's theory, and have not attempted to discuss the con sequences which would follow from any other view of electrical action. I have assumed throughout the equations of the Electro magnetic Field given by Maxwell in the ninth chapter of the second volume of his Treatise. Book excerpt: Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism brought about what Einstein called "the greatest change in the axiomatic basis of physics since Newton." But Maxwell's aim was never to construct an axiomatic theory. Instead, the Treatise presents an argument which, beginning with the most characteristic electrical and magnetic phenomena, and interpreting them as manifestations of continuous fields of electric and magnetic energy, culminates in Maxwell's theory of light as a wave motion within those fields. The argument of the Treatise is not straightforwardly demonstrative but is a dialectical one that can be challenging to discern among the many topics presented. This book undertakes to extract and expound the principal path of Maxwell's dialectical thinking.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Physical Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 of 2 My object in this treatise has been to give a complete account of such portions of Electrical Science as I am acquainted with and at the same time to regard them from a physical as distinguished from a mathematical point of view. I have throughout endeavoured, as much as I am able to connect the various phenomena described with the hypothesis adopted by Newton, Faraday, and Maxwell, namely - that there is no such thing as "action at a distance," but that all electrical actions are transmitted from place to place by strains of some continuous medium filling the space between. In order that the book may be more useful, I have entered very fully into the actual experimental details of most of the investigations mentioned, partly in order that any one wishing to continue the experimental investigation of the subject may find in the book accounts of what has already been done, and partly that students may see that electrical phenomena have a real existence, and are not merely abstractions or results of mathematical analysis. I may add that, for the understanding of the text of the work, no mathematical knowledge is required except that of algebra up to simple equations. There are, however, a few mathematical foot-notes and appendices. By far the greater number of the illustrations in the book are original, and have been engraved under the directions of Mr. Cooper, from drawings of the most recent instruments now in actual use, made by Mr. Cole and Mr. Webster, at Kew Observatory, at Cambridge, at King's College London, at several private laboratories, and at the factories of the principal instrument makers; and I must now express my sincere thanks to these three gentlemen for the skill and care displayed by them throughout the whole of a long and laborious task. This book was released on 1954-06-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Maxwell is without peer. This printing is an opportunity to become thoroughly acquainted with the thoughts of the greatest of our electrical scientists." — School Science and Math Here is the final elaboration of Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism, including the systematic and rigorous derivation of his general equations of field theory. These equations continue to occupy a central position in the modern physicist's view of the physical world. They are a magnificent summary of the fundamental advances in electricity and magnetism, and later inspired the theories of Lorentz on the electron and Einstein on relativity. Einstein himself has said that "The formulation of these equations is the most important event in physics since Newton's time." (The Evolution of Physics.) Volume 1, Part 1, "Electrostatics," describes electrostatic phenomena and develops a mathematical theory of electricity. Maxwell discusses electrical work and energy in a system of conductors, mechanical action between two electrical systems, forms of equipotential surfaces and line of flow, spherical harmonics, the theory of electric images, and other topics. Part II, "Electrokinematics," deals with electric current conduction and resistance, electromotive force between bodies in contact, electrolysis, the mathematical theory of the distribution of electric currents, and other topics.
