Book excerpt: During the first two decades of the twentieth century, the St. Louis Street Department generated one of the most extensive troves of photographs ever taken of the city. Ostensibly created to document municipal challenges and improvements, the images inadvertently captured richly detailed scenes of everyday life. Largely led by Charles Clement Holt (1866-1925), St. Louis's photography operation expanded until it produced about six thousand images per year in 1914. Many of these photographs were lost, but a city historian salvaged a collection of three hundred glass plate negatives in the 1950s, which are now in the Missouri Historical Society collections. This small, but superb, group of photographs provides a wealth of information on the visual culture of St. Louis during a period of rapid transformation. Capturing the City is the first book to examine these photographs, placing the people and landscapes depicted within the broader context of a swiftly urbanizing and industrializing metropolis. Collected and analyzed here by Joseph Heathcott and Angela Dietz, the compelling images in Capturing the City reveal the national trend among cities to use the camera as a documentary tool. Reformers Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine imagined the camera as a truth-telling instrument and used their photographs to mobilize public consciousness. Across the nation, cities used photographers to document slums, workhouses, and crime scenes, as well as municipal improvements like street lighting, pavement, and model housing. In this vein, Holt and his staff showcased both the challenges and the successes of government action in St. Louis. Consistent with their Progressive-era peers, their efforts contributed to the record of ongoing public works while shaping the narrative of urban progress itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, Union Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon marched through the divided slave state Missouri en route to St. Louis. Lyon was to arrest a state militia unit at Camp Jackson that planned to raid a federal arsenal in the city. Upon capturing the men, Lyon's troops encountered crowds of hostile citizens and, after a gun shot, they fired on the mob, killing at least 28 civilians in what is now known as the Camp Jackson affair, or the St. Louis massacre. In this book, the author describes partisan activities leading to hostilities, promotes awareness about the history of slavery in America, and explores political divisions still evident in American culture. Previously unpublished materials about Governor Claiborne Jackson are included, as well as the role of Montgomery Blair in the fight for Missouri, an analysis of the number of arms in the St. Louis Arsenal and the unknown total number of casualties of the St. Louis massacre.

Book excerpt: In the early 1950s, Pruitt-Igoe, a vast public housing project, arose on 57 acres on the near north side of St. Louis. Barely 20 years after construction, the 33 eleven-story buildings that made up the complex were razed, and the vacant land that was once home to thousands of people was gradually reclaimed by a dense, neglected urban forest. What happened in-between is a story that tempts but also defies simple narratives. It is a story of interweaving and competing accounts, both then and now. This volume approaches Pruitt-Igoe with all of its contradiction in mind. Alongside iconic images, other seldom-seen photographs flesh out the history in sometimes surprising ways and, in doing so, preserve some of the stories that are in danger of being permanently erased and lost, just as Pruitt-Igoe was.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the exquisite beauty along the Ozark National Scenic Riverways to the whimsical humor of street sculpture in St. Louis and Kansas City to the gleeful faces of children enjoying a fall festival, Images of Missouri vividly captures the entire breadth of the state. Missouri is home to many well-known places and landmarks, some of which make at least a cameo appearance in the book: the Gateway Arch, the Country Club Plaza, the Missouri River, Ha Ha Tonka castle, the State Capitol and Governor's Mansion, Johnson's Shut-Ins, and the Blue Room at 18th and Vine. At the same time, Images of Missouri includes tranquil scenes from everyday life--scenes that we usually take for granted and rarely stop to absorb: a pair of grain shovels informally propped against a barn wall, an antiquated gas pump gradually succumbing to rust, a wooden walkway delicately glazed with early-morning frost, the silhouette of a fishing party before a pastel sunset. Taken by 33 of the state's best photographers, the 124 photographs in this book provide a remarkable array of perspectives--a feat that would be nearly impossible for a single photographer or even a handful. Through these photos, we discover that even ordinary objects, viewed in the right light with a discerning eye, can offer moments of heightened experience and reflection. Images of Missouri superbly captures the vibrant tapestry of contemporary life in Missouri, as well as parts of our history and identity that cannot be encapsulated in museums, archives, and textbooks.
