Thus it endeavors to put the human body in such a normal, healthy condition that it is practically proof against infection or contagion by dis ease taints and miasms, and against the inroads of bacteria and parasites. My object in submitting this effort to the medical profession is because I believe such a work is needed. In what may be found herein all intention of hypercriticism of any special school of medicine is disclaimed. The author believes the time has come for an understanding between the various schools and sects in medicine; for the throwing down of all artificial and illogical barriers between thoughtful, scientific men who are really searching for truth. This does not mean that any school or sect should become subservient to or be absorbed to extinction by another; but it does mean that the medical profession as a whole should be too broad to allow petty theories and intolerance to separate brothers in a common cause. Of course I refer especially to the differences of views existing between the two chief divisions of the medical profession, the elder or "allopathic" school and the younger or "homoeopathic" school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should modern psychotherapists be interested in philosophy, especially ancient philosophy? Why should philosophers be interested in psychotherapy? There is a sense of mutual attraction between what are today two thoroughly distinct disciplines. However, arguably it was not always the case that they were distinct. The author takes the view that by reconsidering the generally received wisdom concerning the history of these closely-related subjects, we can learn a great deal about both philosophy and psychotherapy, under which heading he includes potentially solitary pursuits such as "self-help" and "personal development".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Bath, With a History of Hydro-Therapeutics and of the Hot-Air Bath From the Earliest Ages IN 1856, the late Dr. Barter established in Ireland the first Hot Air Bath that had existed in Western Europe since the retirement of the Romans from Britain. In 1868, when this work was published, the Bath had been in Operation for twelve years, but its progress still continued to be seriously impeded by the unreasoning opposition of public prejudice, and the equally unscientific hostility of Medical Opinion to which, from its establishment, it had been exposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Medicine to Philosophy That the progress of medical science has enor mously reduced the death-rate no one can possibly deny. The cry occasionally heard, that there is a vast increase in diseases which were never heard of before, is purely absurd; this increase of disease is merely increase in the differentiation of disease. Because at one time the word fever served to cover almost every affection in which the pulse and respiration were quickened and the skin hot, the sum total of disease has not been increased by giving different names to the various fevers. To take a more techni cal instance, the disease of the nervous system called Disseminated Sclerosis will almost undoubtedly be divided up with increasing knowledge into several diseases of the spinal cord, but the sum total of diseases will not be larger. There is, however, just this much truth in the outcry, that as man's life has become more complex with advancing civilisation, so the possibility of minor oscillations from complete adjustment to the environment becomes increasingly great; it is more difficult to be perfectly healthy, because a higher standard of health is required by modern life. This is particularly seen in the case of insanity for civilisation, by increasing the number of social and moral rules to be observed, increases the possibility of their infraction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Esoteric Christianity and Mental Therapeutics Tms volume is designed to complete a series of works on the subject of Mental Therapeutics, the publication of which was commenced several years ago, and which was intended to give a view of the subject in its various aspects. It is hoped the book may be found acceptable and useful to those who are interested in the subject of which it treats. It contains a series of twelve lessons or lectures, which the author has given in a private way to a number of persons who were desirous of learning something of the philosophy and practice of the phrenopathic method of cure. In order that the information contained in the lectures might become more generally circulated, and meet the demands for instruo tion that are made upon the author, they are committed to the press. There is given in the brief compass of the volume a plain presentation of the principles that underlie the practice of the mental system of healing, so that any person of ordinary intelligence, who is moved by a desire to do good, may make a trial of those directions. The author has endeavored to present to the reader every principle which may be viewed as scientifically and experimen tally established, and that is of any practical value, and which it may be proper openly to promulgate to the world at large in the present state of the mind of man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book clarifies the distinction between philosophy of medicine and medical philosophy, expanding the focus from the ‘knowing that’ of the first to the ‘knowing how’ of the latter. The idea of patient and provider self-discovery becomes the method and strategy at the basis of therapeutic treatment. It develops the concept of ‘Central Medicine’, aimed at overcoming the dichotomies of Western–Eastern medicine and Traditional–Integrative approaches. Evidence-based and patient-centered medicine are analyzed in the context of the debate on placebo and non-specific effects alongside clinical research on the patient-doctor relationship, and the interactive nature of human relationships in general, including factors such as environment, personal beliefs, and perspectives on life’s meaning and purpose. Tomasi’s research incorporates neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and medicine in a clear, readable, and detailed way, satisfying the needs of professionals, students, and anyone who enjoys the exploration of the complexity of human mind, brain, and heart.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Physiomedicalism: Its Theorem, Corollary, and Laws of Application for the Cure of Disease Again, the promises of clinical medicine, with its vast accumu lated mass of experimental therapeutic observations, has signally failed to give us even an approach to precision in therapeutic effect because we have simply an aggregation of abstract facts without syllogistic continuity, being devoid of legitimate premise in physio logical truisms. As, also, the resort to chemical philosophy, endeavoring to frame a chemico-therapy, in other words, assuming that the functional activities of the organism are due to chemical disintegration of the tissues, and on this false premise, reasoning that medicines act by chemical equations, giving in some unknow able way a functional result, if given by formulae, analagous to the synthetic results obtained in retorts and test tubes.
