Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophical System of Theistic Idealism "A philosophical system": That sounds audacious enough in days when we are being constantly told that philosophers have ceased to frame systems, and now merely write essays. No further back than 1900, Sidgwick wrote that "the philosophic mind of the modern world is now at the ebb, with its constructive impulses comparatively feeble" (Mind, 1900). Doubtless he was thinking mainly of metaphysical construction, of which he had at another time said that system-making is pre-eminently the affair of philosophy (Mind, 1895). But, even as to "system," it is possible to do a bold thing in a modest spirit. I have called my "Theistic Idealism" a "system" because it is, as far as may be, concerned with, and drawn from, the system of things, rather than from the systems of the Schools. To all of these latter I am yet debtor, and like Gods people when they spoilt the Egyptians, I have not hesitated to lay violent hands - but more frequently critical hands - on what is valuable in any of them that incidentally chanced to lie in the line of my thought-aims and purpose. But this without savour of anything resembling eclecticism, or the admission of heterogeneous elements into the synthesis. I share the modern aversion to the word "system," but so long as thought remains orderly and systematic, system is necessary, and need convey no outworn suggestions of finality. In dealing with the inner connection of philosophical thought, it is thereby justified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Idealism The aim of this book is twofold: to examine the foundations of realism more critically, and to outline a reconstruction of idealism more closely than was possible five years ago. The latest developments of philosophy demand a revision of the whole problem, from a shifted standpoint. Since 1917 realism has gained in solidity and a certain intricate precision. The Critical Realists have discovered a flaw in its theory of perception and tried to mend it (not, I think, with conspicuous success); Professor Whitehead has laid down its first principles once for all; and Professor Alexander has built it up into a system among systems. Realism is ten times more formidable than it was in 1917. And since 1917 the issue has been narrowed down to the field of Space and Time, and it is there that the battle between realism and idealism must be fought. That issue is very clear. For, however realists may differ among themselves, whether they say with Professor Alexander that Space-Time is the ultimate reality, or with Professor Whitehead that the ultimate entities are events, they are all agreed that mind is not the ultimate entity and must be kept out of the problem. "Nature," Professor Whitehead says, "is closed to mind." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Theistic Philosophers: An Historico-Critical Study It isan egregious mistake to suppose, as is Often done, that this group of philosophers were mere critics Of Hegel; their critical assaults were, it is true, in conjunction with other causes, instru mental in overthrowing the sway of Hegelianism in Germany; but their most significant work was not the attempt to get away from Hegel's abstract idealism but - to win the true idealism, and to formulate Theism as a thoroughgoing philosophical system or world-view. For they had no idea of treating Theism as the paltry magnitude it has Often become in the hands of philosophical and theological thinkers of our time. And, for my own part, I should not have thought it worth while now to treat of them because of their assaults on Hegel, since enough has been done in that direction for all time, one might almost say; and besides, the years have brought me a heightened sense of admiration of Hegel's philosophical power and ability, albeit I stand no nearer an acceptance of his system. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Philosophical Problems This volume of Philosophical Essays is an inde pendent work and may be read as such. But it has, at the same time, an ulterior and higher value than that of a volume of detached essays. For, in its choice of subjects, it has been designed and pur posed to serve as a supplementary volume to my recent large work, entitled A Philosophical System of Theistic Idealism.' All the subjects dealt with in the present volume were touched upon in that work, but, because I could not, without serious dis proportion, give them in that work, elaborate as it was said to be, the extended treatment which I desired, I have provided this in the present volume. This enhances the value of the present work, by placing the contents of its chapters in a systematic relation and connection. It, at the same time, ex tends the range and widens the usefulness of the larger work, which it so supplements. This to me is important, for, however some philosophers may choose to entertain indifference as to the value of system, that appears to me no high or satisfying philosophic plane in which the mind is content to be the abode of merely individual, sporadic, and unrelated problems. There is no lack of philosophical variety in the work. Epistemology, Ontology and Metaphysics, and Ethics, are all represented in its chapters, in whose discussions Psychology and Logic also find frequent place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idealism and Theology: A Study of Presuppositions In these lectures an attempt is made to show that there isat work, in the seeming chaos of our philosophical thinking, an organising principle which promises to give new life to theology. At present, while religion clings to the supernatural, philosophy seems to deny and theology hesitates. Religion takes refuge in mysticism. Thereupon theology finds courage to approve, and philosophy becomes loftily critical. But no one will venture to say what exactly is the supernatural, and in what sense mysticism is admissible. A principle which the writer believes can be discovered by means of a criticism of philosophical idealism seems to provide an answer to these questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the New Idealism: A Study in the Religious Philosophy of to-Day While our inquiry presupposes a systematic philosophical position, it is yet couched in as easy and intelligible terms as the case admitted, and addressed not merely to academic circles, but to all who, to-day, amid the prevalent spiritual confusion, are still concerned with the problem of religion and, in the treatment of this problem, desire freedom without shallowness and depth without immobility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Natural Theism That there is need today of thorough and well - reasoned teaching on this subject - and teaching, too, that gives forth no uncertain sound-is patent to every one who is conversant with present-day college ideals and tendencies. Indeed, among all classes of thinkers, whether in college or out, there is a call and demand for a clear and positive presentation of the theistic proofs. A questionaire re cently sent out by Professor James H. Leuba, of Bryn Mawr College, to a large number of the scientists of the country elicited the response that a majority of them are either agnostical regarding the existence of God, or have become actually atheistic. Professor Leuba's book has thus been characterized by an acute reviewer: This is a plea, or rather the conclusion of a plea, for atheism, with its logical denial of immortality.
