Maslow's hierarchy of needs acted as the theory guiding this study, as it was essential when investigating how unmet needs for foster children affected their motivation to learn and feelings of belongingness with their school. This study was designed to answer the following central research question: What are the experiences of former foster students who have taken part in online education? Using a transcendental phenomenological approach, I collected the lived experiences of the participants to uncover emerging themes during online learning while in foster care. A sample of 10 former foster students who experienced online education while in foster care and graduated from high school during the academic years 2021 or 2022 resulted in a participant age range of 18-21 years old. To facilitate triangulation, data collection included surveys, interviews, writing prompt documents, and focus groups. Data analysis followed Moustakas' modification of the van Kaam method to horizontalize the data, cluster common experiences, and develop textural and structural descriptions of the essence of the phenomenon. The themes of engagement deficiency, inferior educational experiences, and feelings of uncertainty for high school foster students engaged in online learning also included feelings of loneliness, insecurity, and post-graduation apprehension. Foster students learning online shared negative experiences including lack of supports, ease of cheating, non-engagement, and feelings of isolation. Foster students, due to their transient nature, need targeted educational supports put in place when learning online to succeed with coursework, become college/career ready, and to engage with peers forming a sense of connection with their school community.

Due to the barriers that foster youth students face before entering college and during college, the study used Rendon’s (1994) theory of validation as a lens to explain how the validating elements of the theory can have positive effects on current and former foster youth to increase their persistence and graduation rates. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven former foster youth who participate in a foster care program. The data were analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Three major themes emerged: The effects of the welfare system before college, educational barriers in college, and support received in higher education. Support and validation were key factors in foster youth overcoming the barriers of the foster care system in order to persist in higher education. Recommendations for future research based on the findings are provided for faculty, staff, and administrators who work with current and former foster youth students.

Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory also guided this study to identify additional barriers to higher education for foster youth. This phenomenological study used a transcendental research method. Data collection methods included face-to-face and phone interviews, focus groups, participant captions for picture cards, and data from intake documents and school records that provided accurate demographic information. Interviews and focus groups were conducted primarily by phone while captions, demographics, and consent were compiled through email, postal service, and participating school records. Moustakas' modified method was used to analyze data for this study. The central research question for consideration was as follows: What are the lived experiences of foster youth who have aged out of foster care and enrolled in community college? The 12 participants for this study shared their unique life experiences as they aged out of foster care and enrolled in higher education programs. While the participants' educational barriers differed to some degree, one commonality each faced was the lack of a dependable adult role model for encouragement and support. The impact of this missing element was evident in the life-choices of participants.

Unfortunately, many youth in foster care experience a variety of challenges that prevent them from completing high school, entering and/or completing post-secondary education, and leading successful independent lives. This phenomenological study explored the essence of the lived experiences of youth who have aged out of foster care and have succeeded academically. The phenomenological approach allows the voices of the youth who have aged out of foster care to be heard. This study followed three streams: lived experiences, social support, and transitional support collaboratively leading youth who have aged out of foster care to academic success. In an effort to understand the experience through the eyes of those most directly affected and represented by the foster care system, phenomenology, a philosophical method that studies the pure science of a phenomenon, was the chosen methodology. Allowing youth who have aged out of foster care the opportunity to share their experiences as they recall them offers a pure account of their experiences as they happened without any bias or prejudice displayed. Primary findings of this research were that those who spend time within the foster care system are a part of a stand-alone community governed by its own set of rules, standards, and values; relationships with others played a vital role in their academic success; internal and external motivators were necessary for completing high school and moving forward with post-secondary education, and the realization that it takes a village to raise a child, shows the value in the communal effort for taking special care of this population of youth. As a result of these findings, recommendations were made. There are recommendations for social services and lawmakers to level the playing field so that all youth in foster care will have access to the same standard of care; provide and market more realistic support from post-secondary programs and schools; standardize group home academic programs, and increase in-home visits to ensure that every child's basic needs are met within the foster care system.

Nationwide, 26,547 youth emancipate from foster care each year. Former foster youth who continue with education beyond high school may elect to receive supportive services through the state's independent living program. Although these services are intended to provide the necessary support while the youth completes a post-secondary degree program, research has shown that fewer former foster youth enter college and complete a degree than their non-former foster youth peers. Further, there has been very little research that explores firsthand experiences of former foster youth as college students. Narrative inquiries are most suited for small numbers of participants in qualitative research studies. Moreover, the best way to understand the human experience is to hear it firsthand from those who have lived it. For this study, eight former foster youth were interviewed about their experiences in foster care and as students in a large, southeastern U.S. community college. Findings from the data were presented as profiles in the youth's own words and through an analysis of the themes found across interviews. Two over-arching topics that relate to the research questions were addressed: meaning-making experiences and identity construction. Within those two topics are themes that support each one. The findings revealed that meaning is made through the transitions former foster youth have experienced, the preparation for college they have had, the connections they have made, and whether or not they feel in control of their lives. The resulting themes of crisis, commitment, transformation, and confidence help to understand how identity is constructed for these youth.

Some colleges and universities require students to take an online course early in their post-secondary education. However, there are a limited number of k-12 public-school districts in the United States that provide opportunities for high school students to take online courses as part of the regular curriculum. This phenomenological study was designed to investigate the perceptions of traditional high school graduates while taking an online course for the first time as university undergraduate students, related to the quality of the learning experiences, challenges faced, and learner satisfaction. Participants for the study included 11 undergraduate college students from a university in the Northeast. Data were gathered via a screening questionnaire, individual interviews, a single focus group interview, and reflective journals. Data analysis utilized NVivo software and included bracketing, open coding, and thematic analysis. Analysis yielded four major themes: (a) flexibility, (b) disconnectedness, (c) challenges of online coursework, and (d) learning preferences. The findings indicated that each participant had a unique experience during the online course. Findings also revealed important insights about online readiness, course interactions, and the strengths and challenges of learning in an online course for the first time. Finally, most participants expressed high satisfaction that the flexibility and convenience of the online course created balance in their busy lives.

Results helped identify ways of adapting to online learning and the opportunities or challenges these participants faced in their online courses. These aspects were delineated into themes that further illuminate the lived experiences of the student participants. From the analysis, the researcher uncovered the appreciation of learners for the flexibility that online learning brings in their lives. Despite the benefits, the learners indicated that they miss personal and face-to-face interactions with their instructors and peers. This theme highlighted the importance of interactions and relationships for the student participants. Further, the researcher found that the participants were pushed to increase their capabilities through the online learning setting by utilizing different resources. Finally, the student participants reported how online learning has permitted them to develop skills that are practical and applicable in the real-world setting.

Former foster care youth resided in out-of-home care with state approved guardians who received funding and monitoring of services. A small number of four-year college institutions provide interventions to retain foster care students. The research sought to identify best practices and to establish a foundation for research. Foster care youth often have a history of abusive and neglectful life experiences. It is fundamental to assure that these students are provided with the appropriate resources to ensure persistence and success. By doing so, institutions may be able to increase student retention and completion. The conceptual framework reflects the historical context of students. The outcome of several different retention efforts is discussed. Finally, the literature explored access to higher education for former foster care youth. The research is aimed to provoke further research, best practice, and to inform research. Four research questions guided the investigation concerning the lived experiences of students who have come from the foster care system and who are enrolled in four-year college institutions. The stories former foster youth told about their interaction with faculty and staff in four-year college institutions inform this study. Four themes emerged from A Narrative Inquiry into Transitioning from Foster Care to College iii the study, (1) campus-based support as an external support, financial support, family as an internal support, transition and access. Through the stories told we learned that former foster care youth require external support in the form of campus-based support, a direct liaison who is assigned to former foster care youth. Internal support is important in assuring consistency, a place to call home and lasting friendships. Financial aid is the driving force that allows former foster care youth to persist. Transition support is crucial in properly progressing into college and adulthood for foster care youth. Finally, best practices are discussed for monitoring success in students who come from the foster care system and are enrolled in four-year college institutions.

Data collection included interviews, focus group interviews and document and artifact examination. The transformative learning theory guided the research into the adult learning process, as the faculty members in the study were adults. This research provides educational studies with a baseline for understanding the factors that impact the development of faculty attitude, especially during a crisis, which in turn can help faculty prepare for such a transition. The results of the study suggested that faculty shared a lack of confidence in online education and their ability to effectively teach students in this environment.

Teaching in this type of environment is a difficult pedagogical shift for classroom educators. The assumption is often made that teachers can make this pedagogical shift just because laptops are provided for all students. The goal was to capture the essence of the lived experiences of fifth grade teachers who will be immersed in the phenomenon of teaching in a student-centered, twenty-first century, one-to-one laptop environment. The overarching research question was: What is the essence of the lived experiences of teachers who are implementing a student-centered, 21st century, one-to-one laptop pilot? Guided by phenomenology using a transcendental approach, data were collected through multiple, in-depth teacher interviews. The research process included identification of the phenomenon; epoche; data collection through 18 interviews with nine fifth-grade teachers; and transcendental phenomenological analysis through reduction, imaginative variation, and syntheses. Reduction involved horizonalization of the data and the development of textural and structural descriptions of the teachers' experiences. In addition, thirty-four codes were identified and reduced to six overarching themes including: looking back, engaged and excited, building a solid foundation, roles have shifted, consider this, and learning the 21st century way. The results will help in the development of effective academic and technology support structures that strengthen a student-centered, 21st century, one-to-one laptop program. The investigation exposed themes of difficulties, strategies, and best practices that teachers experience during the implementation.
