Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of students after failing a nursing course, resulting in the students either sitting out a semester prior to repeating the course or making the decision not to return to a program at all. The central research question for this study was “what are the lived experiences of students who fail a nursing course?” This study retrospectively examined the failure of nursing students to better understand how they processed the event, gained meaning from the experience, and found supportive measures that were useful in moving forward to the next step in their educational journey. The theories guiding this study were Knowles’ adult learning theory and Bandura’s social learning theory, with a nod to Frankl’s theory of meaning making. Participants consisted of 12-15 adult students accepted to an associate degree nursing program in the southeastern United States who failed a nursing course with a D or F. One-on-one interviews and focus small group sessions were conducted in a private conference room at a joint community college center that serves students from three different higher education institutions. Participants were also asked to write a letter of support or advice for a future student experiencing the phenomenon to gain further insight in how they survived the failure, gained meaning from the experience, and were able to move forward following the academic set-back. Data analysis was conducted using van Manen’s thematic analysis to discover the participants’ lived experience following failing a nursing course.

Book excerpt: The United States landscape is experiencing rapid growth in racial, ethnic and linguistic diversity. However, there is a disparity between the United States population and the nursing workforce which is directly related to the ability of minority and English Learner (EL) students to successfully complete nursing school. Significant literature exists on best teaching practices for EL students in grades K-12; however, there is a paucity of nursing literature that examines effective instructional strategies and the phenomenon of learning from the EL nursing students’ perspective. The aim of this interpretive phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of learning among academically successful EL nursing students in associate degree nursing programs. The study was grounded in Heidegger’s hermeneutic phenomenology and guided by van Manen’s method. The purposeful, convenience sample was comprised of ten self-identified senior level EL nursing students who successfully completed a minimum of three academic semesters in associate degree nursing programs in one Northeast state. Audio-recorded, conversational interviews with each participant were conducted in a private setting of the participant’s choosing. Each participant was asked, “Please tell me what it has been like for you as an EL student to learn and be academically successful in the nursing program”. The audio tapes were transcribed verbatim using a professional transcriptionist service, and the researcher used van Manen’s three approaches to analyze the data and identify themes. Four essential themes and several sub-themes were revealed which captured the essence and structure of what it means to experience learning as an EL student in an associate degree nursing program.

Book excerpt: Nursing students experience increased amounts of stress during their educational experience, which can affect their mental and physical well-being. This impact can result in students who drop out of nursing school or failure of nursing courses. Stress is an experience most individuals experience in their lives. Learning to manage the stress can improve the chances for student success and increased graduation rates. If these students are unable to manage stress, their chances of becoming a practicing registered nurse decreases. There have been few studies on the incorporation of coping mechanisms that associate degree nursing students have utilized, aiding in their success. The purpose of this study was to examine the causes of the stress in associate degree nursing students and ultimately identify the coping mechanisms that successful students utilized. This research study explored the lived experiences of nine former associate degree nursing students who have graduated and are currently practicing nursing in the southeastern United States, providing a retrospective view of the phenomena of stress and coping. The results of this phenomenological study identified the main stressors of the former students and identified the coping mechanisms they used. The study found that the main stressors were examinations, clinical, simulation, and skills check off. The coping mechanisms the students used to manage their stress included a determination to succeed and relying on others to help them cope with the stress. Identification of the causes of stress and helpful coping mechanisms may allow for improved retention in nursing school, thus allowing more nurses to enter the workforce.

In response to these educational changes, a thorough review of the literature was performed and revealed a gap related to student outcomes when combining traditional clinical education and high-fidelity patient simulation during clinical courses. The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide a richer understanding of how a student's clinical education impacts his or her educational experiences. Through a phenomenological approach, I examined the lived experiences of 12 nursing students who had completed a medical-surgical clinical course. Data was analyzed utilizing Moustakas' (1994) seven steps of data analysis and revealed six themes to include (a) collaboration/team approach, (b) confidence, (c) influence of the instructor, (d) observation, (e) realism, and (f) reflection. Results of this phenomenological study are timely as states across the nation are considering substantial changes to their clinical education guidelines and policies.
