This book was released on 1995 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From June-October, 1995, Fort Knox contract archaeologists conducted a Phase I survey of the proposed Training Area 11 timber harvest tract and adjoining areas on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin and Meade Counties, Kentucky. The timber tract encompasses approximately 15.3 ha (37.5 acres). An additional adjacent 5.9 ha (14.7 acres) also were surveyed. The survey recorded three historic archaeological sites, 15Hd502-15Hd504, and the recovery of a prehistoric isolated find. Isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register. Site 15Hd504, the isolated find, and a portion of 15Hd503 lie outside the proposed timber tract. The historic sites have an end date of 1919 and are considered potentially eligible for the National Register due to the presence of intact cultural deposits. Sites 15Hd502 and 15Hd504 are also potentially eligible because of their association with individuals of local, and possibly state and national, significance. Because the timber harvest is being conducted to improve airfield safety, site avoidance is not feasible. It is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed except that heavy machinery use on sites be minimized and that archaeologists be present during the logging of site areas to assist in the avoidance of damage.

Book excerpt: In November 1995, the Fort Knox contract archaeology staff conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of a proposed timber harvest area along 745th Battalion Road on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin County, Kentucky. The proposed timber harvest area is 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long, and 30 to 50 m wide (100-160 feet), encompassing approximately 10.9 ha (26.9 acres). Only selected trees will be harvested. No archaeological sites were recorded in the proposed timber harvest area. However, one archaeological site had been recorded as an accidental discovery near the proposed timber harvest area. Because this site has not been previously described in a report of investigations, it is discussed in this report. Site 15Hd494 is a multi-component (Late Archaic and Early Woodland) camp or special activity site with a possible early nineteenth century historic occupation. The site is considered potentially eligible for the National Register. Since 15Hd494 lies completely outside the proposed timber area, it is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed. Since 15Hd494 is being damaged by vehicle traffic, it is recommended that the site be posted as off-limits to unauthorized vehicles.

Book excerpt: In July 1995, the Fort Knox Contract Staff Archaeologist conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of a proposed timber harvest area in Hunting Area 54 on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin County, Kentucky. The timber harvest area encompasses approximately 48 acres (19 ha) in an irregularly shaped area on the ridge tops and slopes adjoining Easy Gap Road. Only selected trees, which were marked by Forestry Section personnel prior to the archaeological survey, will be harvested for marketing, but fallen and damaged trees also will be removed. The survey resulted in the discovery of no archaeological sites. A cemetery (Cemetery #109 or the Stone/Hem Cemetery) is located in the project area and has considerable tree damage near it. It is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed, but that the contract staff archaeologist be on-site when the timbering is performed in the vicinity of the cemetery to assist with the protection and clean-up of the cemetery. If feasible, the cemetery should be fenced after the logging operations are completed to facilitate its future location, protection, and management.

Book excerpt: In September 1995, the Fort Knox contract archaeology staff conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of a proposed timber harvest area near the Regional Correctional Facility on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin County, Kentucky. The proposed timber harvest area is approximately 122 m (400 feet) wide and 25 m (80 feet) long, encompassing approximately 0.30 ha (0.74 acres). Only selected trees will be harvested. The total area surveyed is 580 m long and 325 m wide, encompassing approximately 6.7 ha (16.5 acres). The survey resulted in the discovery of one archaeological site, outside the proposed timber harvest area. Site 15Hd498 is a small lithic scatter, which is considered potentially eligible for the National Register in part due to field conditions not conducive to the adequate investigation of its horizontal or vertical extent. Since 15Hd498 lies completely outside the proposed timber area, it is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March and April 1994 the Fort Knox Staff Archeologist and Assistant Staff Archeologist conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of possible borrow areas for the Yano to Cedar Creek Road improvements on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin County, Kentucky. The project area encompassed 23.2 ha (57.3 acres). The study recorded 15Hd489 and 15Hd490, revisited 15Hd120 and 15Hd121, and tentatively relocated 15Hd246. 15Hd121 (Late Woodland or Mississippian) could not be adequately assessed due to field conditions. It is recommended that 15Hd121 be excluded from the borrow areas unless it is tested. Site 15Hd246, a limestone mound believed to be historic structural debris, may lie in a brush pile at the reported site location, but the brush pile prevented access to the site. It is recommended that 15Hd246 be excluded from borrowing until it can be tested, 15Hd12O (indeterminate), 15Hd489 (indeterminate), and 15Hd490 (Late Woodland) are small, prehistoric upland open habitation sites, and are not eligible for the National Register. It is recommended that, with the exception of the two sites in need of further investigation, the borrow areas be used as proposed.

Book excerpt: In May 1996, the Fort Knox contract archaeological staff conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Heins Range bivouac area, adjoining Longstreet Range Road, on Fort Knox, Hardin County, Kentucky. The bivouac area is irregular in shape, with a maximum length of 854 m (2800 feet) and a maximum width of 274 m (900 feet), encompassing approximately 14.5 ha (35.7 acres). The survey resulted in the discovery of no archaeological materials or deposits. A portion of the L and N Turnpike corridor segment that has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places forms the west boundary of the project area. It is recommended that the bivouac area be developed as proposed, provided that a buffer zone of trees is left along the west boundary to prevent vehicle access to and from the t and N Turnpike and to maintain the historic visual appearance of the L and N Turnpike corridor.

Book excerpt: In May 1994, the Fort Knox cultural resource management staff conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of 13.2 ha (32.5 acres) for the proposed Wilcox Range upland urban area, observation tower, and access road on Fort Knox, Bullitt County, Kentucky. The survey recorded 15Bu528 plus one isolate and revisited 15Bu489. Previously recorded 15Bu488 could not be relocated and is presumed destroyed. 15Bu486, in the project area and previously determined to be not eligible for the National Register, was not revisited. 15Bu488, 15Bu488, and 15Bu528 (late nineteenth-mid twentieth century historic sites) and the prehistoric isolate are not eligible for the National Register, and require no additional archaeological work. 15Bu489 is a prehistoric lithic scatter of indeterminate cultural-temporal affiliation. Only the portion of 15Bu489 in the access road improvements corridor was inspected and was determined to be severely disturbed. No additional work is recommended for 15Bu489 in conjunction with the proposed Wilcox Range access road improvements, but expansion north of the existing road would require further testing of 15Bu489. It is recommended that the upland urban area, observation tower, and access road be constructed as proposed. The proposed lowland Wilcox Range improvements area must be surveyed for cultural resources as a separate project.

Book excerpt: In April 1996, the Fort Knox contract archaeology staff conducted a phase I survey of three proposed borrow areas on Cedar Creek Range, Hardin County, Kentucky. The borrow areas encompass 4.0 ha (10 acres). Four sites were recorded in the survey. Site 15Hd523, in Borrow Area 1, and 15Hd526, in Borrow Area 3, are lithic scatters of indeterminate prehistoric affiliation. Site 15Hd524 in Borrow Area 1 and 15Hd525 near Borrow Area 1 are nineteenth or twentieth century historic sites. Due to previous disturbance, 15HdS23, 15Hd52S, and 15Hd526 are not eligible for the National Register, and no further archaeological investigation is recommended for them. Site 15Hd524 is potentially eligible for the National Register. it should be avoided, because of its archaeological potential and proximity to a creek. If 15Hd524 cannot be avoided, additional archaeological research must be conducted prior to borrowing activities to assess more fully its National Register status. If 15Hd524 is avoided or impacts mitigated through additional archaeological research, then it is recommended that the borrowing be conducted as proposed. Cedar Creek Cemetery is near Borrow Area 3. The cemetery is bermed and fenced. No impact to the cemetery is expected due to the proposed borrowing activities.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In accordance with Executive Order 11593 and other applicable federal laws and regulations a Phase I archaeological survey was conducted in September 1994 of approximately 8.1 ha (20.2 acres) for three proposed bridge replacement areas on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin and Meade Counties, Kentucky. The survey resulted in the recording of two archaeological sites, 15Hd497 and 15Md382, and revisiting of two previously recorded prehistoric sites, 15Hd170 and 15Hd209. None of the sites is eligible for the National Register, due to previous disturbance. No additional archaeological work is recommended for 15Hd17O, 15Hd209, 15Hd497, or 15Md382. Due to the potential for deeply buried cultural deposits, it is recommended that any machine excavations on the left bank of Mill Creek at Bridge 10, and on the right bank of Otter Creek north of the existing bridge be monitored by a qualified professional archaeologist. Alternatively, test trenches could be excavated in these areas in advance of the bridge construction. The other portions of the Bridge 7, 10, and 12 project areas do not require monitoring of construction excavations.
