Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new commentary approaches Revelation from a Pentecostal perspective, but you may be surprised at what this does and doesn’t mean in this case. This is a serious commentary based on the Greek text and includes discussion of all the standard topics (authorship, date, audience, etc.). It gives interpretive priority to the original context and audience while also discussing application today. Newton eschews all populist interpretations of Revelation and questions many assumptions built on futurist or historicist readings, but includes a survey of recent scholarly Pentecostal work on Revelation and an extended discussion of what an authentic Pentecostal reading of Revelation might look like. The commentary highlights features of Revelation that Pentecostals often look for, such as its pneumatology, but also draws attention to features that Pentecostal readers should take more seriously than they often do, such as its missional focus, the narrative flow, intertextual references, and the focus on atonement. This makes it a more optimistic commentary than many available. The commentary interacts in depth with five leading commentaries over the past twenty-five years as well as over two hundred other books and articles, including the oldest existing commentary on Revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every serious student of the Bible desires to understand the text, discover the biblical principles, and apply the truths too his/her life. This commentary is designed to help students, pastors, and Bible teachers understand Revelation in a simple manner. Working from the popular New International Version (NIV), the author provides helpful commentary on the text verse-by-verse. This verse-by-verse commentary is different from others in two respects. First, it is brief while some commentaries are unnecessarily wordy and verbose. Second, it is Pentecostal in outlook. This implies that we generally adhere to the doctrine of biblical inerrancy and adopt a literalist approach to the interpretation of the Bible. Many people today regard Revelation as the most difficult and mysterious book in the New Testament. As the last book of the Bible, it describes the final consummation of all things. In Genesis, the paradise was lost; Revelation shows the new paradise where we will commune intimately with God.

Book excerpt: Where do we go after death? What happens to us? What factors influence our destiny? What will happen to the world in years to come? Is there a controlling divine force in human experience? Is there a plan, or is life a product of random occurrences, of chance? Why is it the righteous who are persecuted and suffer while the wicked seem to prosper? Is there justice in the universe? The book of Revelation offers answers to many of these questions. Since, however, it is one of the more difficult of the New Testament books to read and interpret, it is often overlooked, neglected or even avoided by today’s Christians. Yet it addresses many prophetic issues of importance to those seeking to understand God’s plan for the future. Speaking through its heavy symbolism and sometimes strange visions of heaven, angels, beasts, earthly turmoil and destruction, the Apocalypse offers hope that God will overcome evil and that he does indeed control human destiny.

Book excerpt: The book of Revelation is perhaps the most theologically complex and literarily sophisticated — and also the most sensual — document in the New Testament. In this commentary John Christopher Thomas’s literary and exegetical analysis makes the challenging text of Revelation more accessible and easier to understand. Frank Macchia follows up with sustained theological essays on the book’s most significant themes and issues, accenting especially the underappreciated place of the Holy Spirit in the theology of Revelation.

Book excerpt: "The book of Revelation is, I fear, a very neglected book. Its symbolism belongs to the first century, not to our own age," says Leon Morris in the preface to his commentary on Revelation. Here he explains the significance of the symbolism and shows the bearing of the message of Revelation on the problems of the day in which it was written. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series. The Tyndale New Testament Commentaries have long been a trusted resource for Bible study. Written by some of the world's most distinguished evangelical scholars, these twenty volumes offer clear, reliable, and relevant explanations of every book in the New Testament. These Tyndale volumes are designed to help readers understand what the Bible actually says and what it means. The introduction to each volume gives a concise but thorough description of the authorship, date, and historical background of the biblical book under consideration. The commentary itself examines the text section by section, drawing out its main themes. It also comments on individual verses and deals with problems of interpretation. The aim throughout is to get at the true meaning of the Bible and to make its message plain to readers today.

Book excerpt: The book of Revelation stands as one of the most challenging and inspiring in the Christian canon. While giving rise to much unhelpful speculation, its core message of the active sovereignty of God in a hostile world has given courage and comfort throughout Christian history. In this volume, Amos Yong analyzes the message of Revelation to its earliest readers and speaks to its ongoing meaning for believers today. The volumes in the Belief series offer a fresh and invigorating approach to all the books of the Bible. Building on a wide range of sources from biblical studies and the Christian tradition, renowned scholars focus less on traditional historical and literary angles in favor of a theologically focused commentary that considers the contemporary relevance of the text. Why then, and why now are overarching questions asked throughout the volumes in the series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular culture, the focus of the biblical book of Revelation has been on the identity of the antichrist and the end of the world. Though Revelation speaks to these issues, the book is primarily about Christ and how he addresses humanity’s enemies, including our greatest enemy, death. Revelation Revealed is an expository commentary that pushes through popular misconceptions and explains Revelation in a clear and engaging manner. Often viewed as a confusing book that is difficult to understand, filled with all kinds of incredible imagery, Revelation actually brings a message of hope in times of perplexity and crisis. In Revelation Revealed, Dr. Paul A. Vallee addresses the cultural background in which the ancient readers understood the text and shows the relevancy of that message to today’s readers. This book is the culmination of forty years of biblical study. The content was originally presented to a live audience over the course of twenty-six weeks. The response encouraged Dr. Vallee to put into print what the audience described as a positive message, clarifying and removing misunderstandings and fear by instilling hope in a world that, like the book of Revelation itself, is often confusing and overwhelming.
