Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

This program presents the important concepts of pressure enthalpy in a manner that will appeal to the service technician. Each refrigerant has its own properties and these properties are compiled on the pressure enthalpy chart for that particular refrigerant. The pressure enthalpy chart enables us to create a complete picture, or "snapshot" of the entire system. With a completed pressure enthalpy plot, we can evaluate the major system components as well as calculate latent and sensible heat transfers.

Book excerpt: "This research presents detailed analyses of innovative single and two stages vapor compression refrigeration cycles (VCRCs) as well as a cold thermal energy system (CTES) for residential and commercial cooling applications. Different subcooling systems, such as dedicated mechanical subcooling (DMSC) and liquid-vapor heat exchangers (LVHX) using various refrigerants are investigated and analyzed. Results indicate that subcooling systems have great impacts on increasing the overall energetic and exergetic COPs of VCRC. The energetic and the exergetic COPs of the single stage VCRC with LVHX using R134a are 5.50 and 0.178, respectively. Whereas, for the innovative two stages VCRC with DMSC systems and R134a, energetic end exegetic COPs are found to be 5.83 and 0.189, respectively. A direct contact heat transfer CTES system using R134a-clathrate as a storage medium is investigated experimentally on a single-stage VCRC at different operating conditions. Some of the investigated operating conditions used to evaluate the storage medium behavior (clathrate) and the overall system performance are compressor speed, refrigerant mass flow rate, and different water to refrigerant mass ratios. Using R134a, it is found that at lower refrigerant mass flow rate between 0.5 to 0.8 kg/min, the clathrate is formed at longer durations, and COPs of operating cycles are found to be low compared to VCRCs. At a higher mass flow rate of 1.2 kg/min, the COPs of the CTES systems are found to be between 11.81 and 11.85, which is higher than the corresponding single stage VCRCs with LVHX by 42.5 to 44.5% and higher that the VCRC with DMSC by 41.3% to 43%. Current results show that at lower compressor speed of 2100 rpm and constant R-134a mass flow rate of 1.2 kg/sec, the COP is improved by 17%; whereas, at higher compressor speed of 2900 rpm, the COP is decreased by 23%. At higher water/R134a mass ratios in the crystallizer (storage tank), COPs are found to be decreasing due to the increase in charging times needed to form the clathrate compared to all other cases. Finally, the experimental and simulation results indicate that the CTES systems have higher COPs as compared to innovative VCRCs."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The vapor compression cycle (VCC) underpins the vast majority of refrigeration systems throughout the world. Most undergraduate thermodynamics courses cover the VCC, albeit in a cursory fashion. This book is designed to offer an in-depth look at the analysis, design and operation of large-scale industrial ammonia-based refrigeration systems. An important feature of this work is a treatment of computer-aided analysis using CoolProp, an open source resource for evaluating thermodynamic properties. CoolProp can be incorporated into a large number of common computational platforms including Microsfot Excel, Python, and Matlab, all of which are covered in this book.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer model was created using compressor and condenser performance data to simulate vapor-compression ammonia refrigeration system performance under various operating conditions and strategies. The model was used to estimate energy, demand, and cost savings resulting from reduced condensing pressures. Two ammonia refrigeration systems were selected for the investigation into reduced condensing pressure operation. Each refrigeration system was monitored under two modes of operation: high (fixed-head) and reduced (floating-head) condensing pressure. Compressor and condenser fan power, condensing pressure, and ambient dry and wet-bulb temperatures were recorded for a one week period. During the fixed-head period, the condensing pressure was maintained at 145 to 155 psig, which is typical for industry. The condenser fan controls were adjusted for the floating-head period, reducing the average condensing pressures to 117 to 130 psig. Reductions of 9.8% to 11.7% in combined compressor and condenser fan power were observed during the floating-head operation. In addition, none of the potential problems associated with floating-head operation were observed. The model was used to simulate refrigeration system performance during the monitoring periods, using weather data and estimated refrigeration loads as model input. Model predictions were compared with the monitored data to validate the model performance. The model was used to predict monthly and annual energy, peak-demand, and operating costs for a range of condensing pressures. Monthly dry and wet-bulb temperature profiles, and estimates of refrigeration loads were used as input for the model. The model predicted: Annual energy savings of 10.6% to 12.0%, corresponding to 0.63% to 0.83% savings per degree reduction in average condensing temperature. Average monthly peak demand savings of 8.7% to 9.2%, corresponding to 0.53% to 0.64% savings per degree reduction in average condensing temperature. Average annual cost savings of 10.4% to 11.9%, corresponding to 0.62% to 0.82% savings per degree reduction in average condensing temperature. The possibility of minimum condensing pressures, below which the condenser fan operating costs outweigh compressor savings. A significant portion of the possible energy savings (79% to 93%) with no additional equipment or capital cost.

Book excerpt: The vapor compression refrigeration cycle is the most common method used for removing heat from a lower temperature level to a higher temperature level using a mechanical work. At lower temperatures (typically lower than −40°C), complex refrigeration schemes, such as cascaded refrigeration cycles, may be needed, increasing the complexity of the models used to predict the power requirements. This chapter introduces a new linear refrigeration model to predict the shaft power demand of the refrigeration cycle given the cooling demand, the condensing, and evaporation temperatures. The refrigeration model is based on regression of rigorous simulation results. This chapter also proposes a new systematic optimization method for minimizing the work consumed in refrigeration system. The methodology employs nonlinear model to find the optimum refrigeration temperature levels and their cooling duties. To solve the nonlinear problem, generalized reduced gradient algorithm is used. A case study is presented to demonstrate the advantage using of the proposed methodology. Results show that the difference in power prediction between rigorous simulation and the new refrigeration model is about 10%. The work consumed in refrigeration cycle can be reduced to 9% compared to the base case when the operating conditions are optimized.
