Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Parameter estimation and data regression represent special classes of optimization problems. Often, nonlinear programming methods can be tailored to take advantage of the least squares, or more generally, the maximum likelihood, objective function. In previous studies we have developed large-scale nonlinear programming methods that are based on tailored quasi-Newton updating strategies and matrix decomposition of the process model. The resulting algorithms converge in a reduced space of the parameters while simultaneously converging the process model. Moreover, tailoring the method to least squares functions led to significant improvements in the performance of the algorithm. These approaches can be very efficient for both explicit and implit [sic] models (i.e., problems with small and large degrees of freedom, respectively). In the latter case, degrees of freedom are proportional to a potentially large number of data sets. Applications of this case include errors-in- all-variables estimation, data reconciliation and identification of process parameters. To deal with this structure, we apply a decomposition approach that performs a quadratic programming factorization for each data set. Because these are small components of large problems, an efficient and reliable algorithm results. These methods have generally been implemented on standard von Neumann architectures and few studies exist that exploit the parallelism of nonlinear programming algorithms. It is therefore interesting to note that for implicit model parameter estimation and related process applications, this approach can be quite amenable to parallel computation, because the major cost occurs in matrix decompositions for each data set. Here we describe an implementation of this approach on the Alliant FX/8 parallel computer at the Advanced Computing Research Facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Special attention is paid to the architecture of this machine and its effect on the performance of the algorithm. This approach is demonstrated on five small, undetermined regression problems as well as a larger process example that demonstrates simultaneous data reconciliation and parameter estimation."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explosive growth in the size of spatial databases has highlighted the need for spatial data mining techniques to mine the interesting but implicit spatial patterns within these large databases. This book explores computational structure of the exact and approximate spatial autoregression (SAR) model solutions. Estimation of the parameters of the SAR model using Maximum Likelihood (ML) theory is computationally very expensive because of the need to compute the logarithm of the determinant (log-det) of a large matrix in the log-likelihood function. The second part of the book introduces theory on SAR model solutions. The third part of the book applies parallel processing techniques to the exact SAR model solutions. Parallel formulations of the SAR model parameter estimation procedure based on ML theory are probed using data parallelism with load-balancing techniques. Although this parallel implementation showed scalability up to eight processors, the exact SAR model solution still suffers from high computational complexity and memory requirements. These limitations have led the book to investigate serial and parallel approximate solutions for SAR model parameter estimation. In the fourth and fifth parts of the book, two candidate approximate-semi-sparse solutions of the SAR model based on Taylor's Series expansion and Chebyshev Polynomials are presented. Experiments show that the differences between exact and approximate SAR parameter estimates have no significant effect on the prediction accuracy. In the last part of the book, we developed a new ML based approximate SAR model solution and its variants in the next part of the thesis. The new approximate SAR model solution is called the Gauss-Lanczos approximated SAR model solution. We algebraically rank the error of the Chebyshev Polynomial approximation, Taylor's Series approximation and the Gauss-Lanczos approximation to the solution of the SAR model and its variants. In other words, we established a novel relationship between the error in the log-det term, which is the approximated term in the concentrated log-likelihood function and the error in estimating the SAR parameter for all of the approximate SAR model solutions.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the first conference of the Society for Computational Economics held at ICC Institute, Austin, Texas, May 21-24, 1995. Twenty-two papers are included in this volume, devoted to applications of computational methods for the empirical analysis of economic and financial systems; the development of computing methodology, including software, related to economics and finance; and the overall impact of developments in computing. The various contributions represented in the volume indicate the growing interest in the topic due to the increased availability of computational concepts and tools and the necessity of analyzing complex decision problems. The papers in this volume are divided into four sections: Computational methods in econometrics, Computational methods in finance, Computational methods for a social environment and New computational methods.£/LIST£

Book excerpt: Euro-Par – the European Conference on Parallel Computing – is an international conference series dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of parallel computing. The major themes can be divided into the broad categories of hardware, software, algorithms, and applications for parallel computing. The objective of Euro-Par is to provide a forum within which to promote the dev- opment of parallel computing both as an industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the frontier of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. This is particularlyimportant at a time when parallel computing is - dergoing strong and sustained development and experiencing real industrial take up. The main audience for and participants of Euro-Par are seen as researchers in academic departments, government laboratories, and industrial organisations. Euro-Par’s objective is to become the primarychoice of such professionals for the presentation of new results in their speci?c areas. Euro-Par is also interested in applications that demonstrate the e?ectiveness of the main Euro-Par themes. Euro-Par now has its own Internet domain with a permanent Web site where the historyof the conference series is described: http://www. euro-par. org. The Euro-Par conference series is sponsored bythe Association of Computer Machineryand the International Federation of Information Processing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This section gives a description of notions used throughout this study. Current achievements in developing action-centered ontologies are also discussed. 2.1 Ontologies In the context of information extraction and retrieval, different kinds of ontologies can be distinguished [15]: • Top-level ontologies describe very general concepts like space and time, not depending on a particular domain, • Domain ontologies and task ontologies describe the vocabulary related to a generic domain or kind of task, detailing the terms used in the top-level ontology, • Application ontologies describe the concepts that depend on the particular domain and task within a specific activity. Several investigations have been conducted to bring actions (tasks) to bear on - tologies. Among them are Chandrasekaran et al. [6] and Mizoguchi et al. [23] in the fields of AI and Knowledge Engineering. For the geospatial domain, Kuhn [21] and Raubal and Kuhn [26] have attempted to support human actions in ontologies for transportation. Acknowledging the importance of human actions in the geographic domain, a research workshop was held in 2002, bringing together experts from diff- ent disciplines to share the knowledge and work on this issue [1]. Camara [5], one of the workshop participants, has proposed that action-driven spatial ontologies are formed via category theory, for the case of emergency action plans.
