Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pageant of Life: Poems Heraclitus As one who in a mighty river swims And feels the water's smooth, incessant flow, With drops that ever come and ever go, Till his brain totters and his eyesight dims, So may we feel our life fly. Lightest whims And fiercest lusts that rock us to and fro Shift, fade alike, and vanish. Fast or slow, The endless stream its unknown channel brims. One only in this change remains unchanged. All time sweeps on and all it leaves behind, The heart that harbored and the heart that ranged, All passion's ebbs and flows, and hope's clear wind, All love and hate, estranger and estranged, Are quiet in that one eternal mind. Epicurus From early morn till late at eve I use To ponder on the cause and end of things: Whether the gods are vain imaginings, Why love is blind, why passions crush and bruise, Why men seek evil and the good refuse. Beneath my trees, where Philomela sings, Where fountains play, and marble gods and kings Look on benign, I meditate and muse. Sometimes a wave of girlish love breaks in And floods my reveries with passion's foam - I laugh, and pant, and struggle for my breath. So years pass on, and end, as they begin; And I, contented, wait till that day come, Which leads from quiet life to quiet death. Book excerpt: Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. California Studies. Film. SAVAGE PAGEANT recounts the history of the defunct zoo, Jungleland, which housed Hollywood's show animals up until its closure in 1969. In it, Stark explores the concept of US American spectacle and its historic ties to celebrity culture, the maternal body, racist taxonomies, the mistreatment of animals, and ecological violence. With a hybrid, documentary poetics, SAVAGE PAGEANT reveals how we attempt to narrate and control geographical space and how ghosts (remainders, the sketch, unfinished stories) collapse the tidy corners of our collective, accumulative histories.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pageant and Other Poems Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome Has many sonnets: so here now shall be One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me To her whose heart is my heart's quiet home, To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome; Whose service is my special dignity, And she my loadstar while I go and come. And so because you love me, and because I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honoured name: In you not fourscore years can dim the flame Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws Of time and change and mortal life and death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triumph of Life was the last major work by Percy Bysshe Shelley before his death in 1822. The work was left unfinished. Shelley wrote the poem at Casa Magni in Lerici, Italy in the early summer of 1822. He modelled the poem, written in terza rima, on Petrarch's Trionfi and Dante's Divine Comedy. Shelley was working on the poem when he was accidentally drowned on 8 July 1822 during a storm on a voyage from Leghorn. The poem was first published in the collection Posthumous Poems (1824) published in London by John and Henry L. Hunt which was edited by his wife Mary Shelley, who emphasised the importance of the work. The theme of the poem is an exploration of the nature of being and reality. For Shelley, life itself, the "painted veil" which obscures and disguises the immortal spirit, is a more universal conqueror than love, death, fame, chastity, divinity, or time, and, in a dream vision, he sees this triumphal chariot pass, "on the storm of its own rushing splendour," over the captive multitude of men. Ultimately, natural life corrupts and triumphs over the spirit.

Book excerpt: Here in a facsimile of the 1930 edition is Willis Richardson's collection of twelve plays and pageants that playwrights of the era wrote expressly for black audiences, mainly students and other young black people who staged them. Not available in any other source, this is the important work of nine significant dramatists who helped to lay the foundations of African American drama. Included are Thelma Myrtle Duncan's Sacrifice, Maud Cuney-Hare's Antar of Araby, John Matheus's Ti Yette, May Miller's Graven Images and Riding the Goat, Willis Richardson's The Black Horseman, The King's Dilemma, and The House of Sham, Inez M. Burke's Two Races, Dorothy C. Guinn's Out of the Dark, Frances Gunner's The Light of the Women, and Edward J. McCoo's Ethiopia at the Bar of Justice. This edition also contains Richardson's introduction from the 1930 edition, not included in later versions.
