Based on a weighted superposition approach, this method uses analytical functions built from opening displacement profiles to determine full stress and displacement fields in a linearly elastic two-dimensional infinite plate containing interacting kinked and branched cracks under far field loading. In addition, results include stress intensity factors at tip and kink locations. Rapid convergence is achieved for few degrees of freedom yielding crack face tractions consistent with those prescribed. Moreover, this method involves no numerical integration, eliminating unnecessary computational errors. The features of this method are demonstrated by the solution of a V-shaped crack. The method yields stress intensity factor results that are in agreement with a particular case found in a well-known handbook.

The techniques to be developed are particularly appropriate when cracks are relatively short, and are growing in the neighbourhood of some stress raising feature, causing a relatively steep stress gradient. It is therefore practicable to represent the geometry in an idealised way, so that a precise solution may be obtained. This contrasts with, say, the finite element method in which the geometry is modelled exactly, but the subsequent solution is approximate, and computationally more taxing. The family of techniques presented in this book, based loosely on the pioneering work of Eshelby in the late 1950's, and developed by Erdogan, Keer, Mura and many others cited in the text, present an attractive alternative. The basic idea is to use the superposition of the stress field present in the unfiawed body, together with an unknown distribution of 'strain nuclei' (in this book, the strain nucleus employed is the dislocation), chosen so that the crack faces become traction-free. The solution used for the stress field for the nucleus is chosen so that other boundary conditions are satisfied. The technique is therefore efficient, and may be used to model the evolution of a developing crack in two or three dimensions. Solution techniques are described in some detail, and the book should be readily accessible to most engineers, whilst preserving the rigour demanded by the researcher who wishes to develop the method itself.

Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to extend the investigation into a method to represent and analyze the stress field around two parallel edge cracks in a finite body. The Westergaard-Schwarz method combined with the local collocation method was used to analyze different cases of two parallel edge cracks in a finite body. Using this method a determination of when two parallel edge cracks could be analyzed as isolated single edge cracks was determined Numerical experimentation was conducted using ABAQUS. It was used to obtain the coordinate and stress information required in the local collocation method. The numerical models were created by maintaining one crack at a fixed length while varying the length of the second crack as well as the separation distance of the two cracks. The results obtained through the local collocation method were compared with the finite element obtained J-Integrals to verify the accuracy of the results. The results obtained in the analysis showed that the major factor in determining when the second crack's stress field has to be considered was the crack separation distance. It was found that a reduction in the second crack's length did not have a significant effect on overall stress intensity factors of the fixed crack. A larger change in the opening mode stress intensity factor can be seen by varying the crack separation distance. As well as seeing a steady reduction in shear mode stress intensity factors as the crack separation was increased. The results showed that after a certain crack separation distance the two cracks could be analyzed separately without introducing significant error into the stress field calculations.

Book excerpt: This dissertation concerns itself with problems involving cracks under finite deformation in incompressible hyperelastic materials with special application to soft materials. The main focus is on using numerical methods, in particular the finite element method (FEM), to find the solution of crack tip fields under applied far field loads, in materials undergoing axisymmetric, plane stress and plane strain deformations. In the first chapter a large strain finite element analysis is used to study the deformation of an incompressible Neo-Hookean half space in contact with a flat rigid cylindrical punch. Adhesion is assumed between the elastic solid and punch and the deformation is studied as the punch is retracted. Two interface conditions, frictionless and no slip, are considered. Numerical results are compared with prediction of small strain linear elastic (SSLE) theory. The results show that many aspects of the deformation are not captured by the SSLE theory. For example, the interfacial normal stress at the punch edge is much higher for the case with frictionless boundary condition. The deformation profiles are also very different. The results give important insights on how soft adhesives deform when they detach from a hard surface. The second chapter makes use of a finite element model to study the behavior of the large deformation field near the tip of a crack in a soft incompressible plane stress fracture specimen loaded in Mode I. Results are obtained for the case of a NeoHookean solid (ideal rubber) and a hyperelastic solid with exponentially hardening behavior. In contrast to the predictions of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), the near tip stress fields are dominated by the opening stress which shows a 1/R singularity for the Neo-Hookean material and a -1/RlnR singularity for the exponential hardening solid. The results show very similar qualitative behavior in the near tip stress fields despite the very large difference in strain hardening behavior of the two material models. Further, the results show that the near tip opening stress is controlled by the far field energy release rate for large applied loads. The third chaper presents a numerical study of finite strain deformation fields near the tip of an interface crack between a rigid substrate and an incompressible hyperelastic solid using the finite element method (FEM). The FEM simulations make use of a remeshing scheme to overcome mesh distortion. Analyses are carried out by assuming that the crack tip is either "pinned", i.e., the elastic material is perfectly bonded (full friction) to the rigid substrate, or frictionless. The focus is on a material which hardens exponentially. For both the frictionless interface and the pinned crack under plane stress deformation, it is found that the true stress field directly ahead of the crack tip is dominated by the normal stress (T22) and the crack face opens up smoothly. This is also true for an interface crack along a frictionless boundary in plane strain deformation. However, for a pinned interface crack under plane strain deformation, the true opening normal stress (T22) is found to be lower than the shear stress (T12) and the transverse normal stress (T11). Also, the crack opening profile for a pinned crack under plane strain deformation is completely different from those seen in plane stress and in plane strain (frictionless boundary condition). The crack face flips over and the tip angle is almost tangential to the interface. The results suggest that interface friction can play a very important role in interfacial fracture of soft materials on hard substrates.
