The first part investigated the control induced by a spanwise tripwire on a circular cylinder undergoing one-degree-of-freedom vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The cylinder vibrates in the cross-stream direction as a result of the fluid forcing in a recirculating water tunnel. Changing mass and damping ratios in the test rig allowed the investigation at different VIV response branches. The tripwire diameter was 6.25% of the cylinder diameter. Experimental research was conducted by attaching the large-scale tripwire along the span of the cylinder at various angular positions ranging from 0° to 180° (with respect to the most upstream point of the cylinder). Along with measuring the trajectory of the cylinder motion, the instantaneous velocity field in the near wake of the cylinder was obtained simultaneously at a fixed Reynolds number of 10,000 (based on the cylinder diameter) using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. Various vortex-formation modes induced by the tripwire were observed. It was shown that the oscillation pattern, frequency, and amplitude of the cylinder can be altered significantly depending on the angular position of the tripwire and the VIV response branch. For specific tripwire positions, increases of up to 52 times and decreases of up to 98% were identified in the oscillation amplitude of the tripped cylinder compared to the amplitude of the clean cylinder. The second part of the study investigated the effects of the tripwire on the flow structure behind a circular cylinder forced to oscillate harmonically at prescribed amplitudes and frequencies in the cross-stream direction. Oscillation amplitudes are 0.05, 0.3 and 0.6 times the cylinder diameter, and oscillation frequencies are 0.61, 0.8, and 1 times the vortex shedding frequency of the stationary clean cylinder counterpart. For a fixed oscillation amplitude and frequency, the tripwire can either induce intermittent switching between various vortex shedding modes or cause a wake mode to be dominant during the entire observed oscillation motion by altering the vortex shedding mechanism. The wake of the tripped cylinder undergoing the lowest amplitude forced oscillation motion showed resemblance to the wake of the stationary tripped cylinder.

Book excerpt: The near field region of the turbulent wake behind a rotating and nonrotating two dimensional circular cylinder is documented. U component mean velocities, turbulent intensities and velocity autocorrelation functions are measured at various downstream locations. From the autocorrelation functions, Taylor time microscales, longitudinal integral time scales and energy dissipation rates are computed. The measurements are performed for the flow over a circular cylinder at omega = 0 RPM and omega is approximately 500 RPM. The free stream velocity and Reynolds number, based on cylinder diameter, are respectively 5.9 m/sec and approximately 50,000. The turbulent measurements are made with a laser velocimeter using a frequency shifting phase modulator and the photon correlation processing scheme. Naturally occurring contaminant is augmented with vaporized kerosene to increase the magnitude of scattered light. Results are presented for the effects of varying omega, frequency shifting, particle concentrations and detector optics pinhole size on the turbulent quantities. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a concise and comprehensive review of the progress made during the past two decades on vortex induced vibration (VIV) of mostly circular cylindrical structures subjected to steady uniform flow. The critical elements of the evolution of the ideas, theoretical insights, experimental methods, and numerical models are traced systematically; the strengths and weaknesses of the current state of the understanding of the complex fluid/structure interaction are discussed in some detail. Finally, some suggestions are made for further research on VIV. The organization of the paper is given at the end of the next section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of coupling between the flow in the wake of a circular cylinder and cylinder motion has important applications in structural, offshore and thermal power engineering. For lightly-damped structural elements, comparatively large-amplitude cylinder oscillations (order of two diameters peak-to-peak;) may result when the frequency of vortex shedding coalesces with one of the natural frequencies of the structure. This in turn can lead to a large reduction in the fatigue life of the structure or alternatively produce motion-related serviceability problems. A significant feature of the cylinder-wake interaction appears to be the presence of vortex couples in the near wake, of either skew- symmetric or asymmetric nature [1]. In order to examine the physics of the problem, we have taken a direct numerical simulation approach, in which the Navier-Stokes equations are solved in an accelerating reference frame attached to the cylinder [3]. Spatial discretization has been carried out using a non-conforming spectral element method [4,6]; time advancement was carried out using a second order time-splitting scheme [7]. As an adjunct to future studies in vortex-induced vibration, timeseries of lift and drag coefficients are presented, based on two-dimensional studies of forced cross-flow oscillation at Re-500. These are complemented by an examination of wake modes, using contours of vorticity. We use correlations between lift forces and cylinder cross-flow velocities and acceleration to assess the phase angle between lift force and cylinder motion, which in turn indicates the sign of mechanical power transfer between the fluid and the cylinder.

Book excerpt: The near wake of a circular cylinder in crossflow is experimentally investigated for Reynolds number 7600. The purpose is to develop techniques for characterizing the formation region of the Karman vortex street in presence of transition to turbulence and to use these techniques to examine the quasi-periodic vortex shedding phenomenon. A thermal tracer is used to tag vortical fluid in one of the cylinder boundary layers and this scalar is subsequently detected in the wake. The instantaneous phase of the amplitude and frequency modulated poly-chromatic vortex shedding phenomenon is computed using a digital Hilbert transform technique. This method is a generalization of the monochromatic complex rotating vector to processes which are modulated. The computed phase is used to conditionally sample the wake temperature using a six-sensor resistance thermo-meter array, and the resulting data are processed using statistical methods. Results demonstrate that the near wake region contains diffuse vortical fluid and this fluid has a role in the shar layer instability. The statistics also show the formation and shedding of a mean Karman vortex, and lead to a possible explanation of the modulation process. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an experimental and analytical investigation of the forced oscillations of a circular cylinder in uniform flow. The transverse force has been decomposed into two components and the appropriate force coefficients have been determined experimentally through the use of a Fourier-averaging technique. The results were then incorporated into the equation of motion to predict the dynamic response of elastically-mounted cylinders. The numerical predictions were found to be in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. The results of the discrete-vortex model of the separated flow field about an oscillating cylinder will be described in a separate report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of wakes downstream of cylinders is of major importance in the generation of flow-induced sound and vibration and also influences the convective heat transfer process. In particular, it is now thought that the formation of spanwise structures plays an important role. A better understanding of their development is required, and this could lead to ways of reducing both noise and vibration and to an improvement in heat and momentum transfer. Data are presented from tests carried out in a closed-circuit wind tunnel; also presented are data and flow visualizations from tests in a closed-circuit water tunnel. Hot-wire anemometer probes and pressure probes were used to measure velocity and pressure fluctuations at a number of spanwise locations in the wakes. From these measurements the spanwise coherence was calculated. The spanwise coherence increased as the distance between the cylinders in tandem was decreased; when this distance was less than three diameters, spanwise coherence at all spanwise separations was higher than for a single cylinder. Flow visualizations show the complex nature of the flow in the spanwise direction, particularly the existence of streamwise vortices. These appear to be responsible for the sharp reduction in spanwise coherence at large separations between the two cylinders in tandem. The work described is from a preliminary study with the object of developing a better understanding of near-wake flows prior to undertaking a comprehensive three-dimensional flow-field investigation.
