Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in the early 1900s. this extremely scarce hunting book is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition; we have now republished it using the original text and photographs. This is an enthralling true account of Frank Weber's first hunting trip along the White Nile in the Upper Sudan. Accompanied by a lifelong friend and experienced hunter he sets forth from England via Trieste and Alexandria, through Cairo to Khartum, then joined by native guides and bearers, they begin their hunt along the banks of the Nile. Equipped with double .470's, light magazine rifles, a 10 Bore, and shotguns, they seek to take a number of specimens from the area's big game population. Their list of quarry include elephant, buffalo, eland, ibex, waterbuck, various gazelle, kob, "Mrs Gray", crocodiles and hippo's. etc. Fifty four pages are packed with exciting anecdotes of their often dangerous attempts to bag specimens of each of these. The book also contains a number of early black and white trophy photographs and an area map. The author professes to be a novice hunter, but guided by his more experienced companion ends the safari with a fair share of the total bag. This small book is a fascinating record of early big game hunting in one of the more inaccessible hunting grounds of Africa, and will prove of much interest to all sportsmen and historians of that era. Many of the earliest sporting books, particularly those dating back to the 1800s, are now extremely scarce and very expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

BBC History Revealed Magazine “Essential reading." All About History "Valiant, valuable and entertaining." Times Literary Supplement The greatest river in the world has a long and fascinating history. Professor Terje Tvedt, one of the world's leading experts on the history of waterways, travels upstream along the river's mouth to its sources. The result is a travelogue through 5000 years and 11 countries, from the Mediterranean to Central Africa. This is the fascinating story of the immense economic, political and mythical significance of the river. Brimming with accounts of central characters in the struggle for the Nile – from Caesar and Cleopatra, to Churchill and Mussolini, and on to the political leaders of today, The Nile is also the story of water as it nourished a civilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wealth of information and analysis on the environmental forces that have helped shaped the cultures of the African continent. A scholarly reference work that will also appeal to the general reader, Sub-Saharan Africa sets the story of the African environment within the context of geological time and shows how the continent's often harsh conditions prompted humans to develop unique skills in agriculture, animal husbandry, and environmental management. Part of ABC-CLIO's Nature and Human Societies series, this book enables readers to better grasp the extent of humanity's effect on our world. Of particular interest are the book's sections dealing with the impact of the Biafran famine of the 1960s, the Sahelian drought of the 1970s, population growth, and the ongoing challenges of war and HIV/AIDS. Crucially, the book also shows how, despite their relative poverty, many African states have coped admirably with rapid urbanization and have developed world-class conservation and sustainability programs in order to protect and harness some of the most endangered species in the world.
