Book excerpt: Mainstream anaerobic wastewater treatment with the staged anaerobic fluidized-bed membrane bioreactor (SAF-MBR) shows promise to transform secondary wastewater treatment into an energy-positive, decentralizable process. However, prior to deployment in the field, more information is required to address the issues of dissolved methane recovery, compliance with prevailing regulations, and compatibility with polishing unit processes. California water reuse regulations presuppose aerobic treatment, presenting compliance challenges for the SAF-MBR without additional post-treatment compared to conventional activated sludge. Field experiments were conducted with a demonstration-scale SAF-MBR process to evaluate dissolved methane recovery and effluent polishing to reduce trace organic contaminants. Post-treatment consisted of an air stripping column for dissolved methane recovery, aerobic polishing, regenerated activated carbon filtration, and UV disinfection. Post-treated water was applied to planter beds, and the fate and transport of trace organic contaminants as well as water quality surrogates was analyzed through the post-treatment train. Results will inform future designs for non-potable water reuse utilizing the SAF-MBR, advancing this energy saving technology closer to full scale use in the wastewater sector.

Book excerpt: A novel anaerobic bioreactor integrated with membrane microfiltration was developed to study the treatment of prehydrolysis liquor (PHL) from a dissolving pulp production facility located in Nackawick, New Brunswick, Canada. The PHL with total chemical oxygen demand (COD) of approximately 100 g/L mainly consisted of sugars, acetic acid, furfural, and lignin. This high organic strength PHL poses a serious disposal problem for the pulp industry leading to environmental concerns if not treated adequately. The current treatment method of the PHL (evaporation and burning) used by the industry is highly energy intensive. A submerged membrane-based bio-treatment system called sludge-bed anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SB-AnMBR) was designed to provide a possible alternate treatment solution for the PHL. It consists of a granular anaerobic sludge-bed at the bottom followed by a submerged flat-sheet microfiltration membrane module with a biogas scouring system placed above the sludge bed zone in an upflow reactor. Biogas scouring helped in reducing the fouling of the membranes from excessive deposition of sludge layer on surfaces of the flat-sheet membranes. The experimental study was designed and conducted for about 800 days using two 50 liter SB-AnMBRs made of steel at mesophilic (35°C) and thermophilic (55°C) temperatures in an environmental chamber. The reactors were operated in a continuous mode applying organic loading rates ranging from 0.8 to 10 kg-COD/m3-d at mesophilic and thermophilic temperature conditions. A series of batch experiments was conducted prior to the continuous operation to evaluate the anaerobic treatability of the PHL. The effect of factors such as biological activity of the seed sludge, organic loading rate, and temperature on anaerobic digestion of the PHL was investigated through batch respirometric experiments. Results from characterization and batch studies showed that the PHL have potential to be a suitable substrate for anaerobic degradation in continuous SB-AnMBRs. SB-AnMBRs’ overall performance was found to be good with greater than 82% removal of the total COD at mesophilic (35°C) and thermophilic (55°C) temperatures. Methane yield was found to be more than 0.33 m3-CH4/kg-COD removed/day at the both the temperatures studied. Biokinetic coefficients were determined using the data obtained from the continuous and batch studies at mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. The coefficients were analyzed using Monod and Arrhenius models. The results of biokinetic coefficients were found in the agreement with the effluent characterization from the continuous reactors. Health of the bioreactor in terms of the measurement of cellular adenosine triphosphate (cATPtm) and its correlation with COD removal, methane production, and active biomass concentration was also investigated. Membrane fouling was not found to be significant at the sustained flux rate of 0.1 m/d during the continuous operation. Membrane autopsy and characterization studies of the foulants suggested that fouling occurred mostly due to organic foulants like carbohydrates and proteins. Chemical cleaning of the membranes resulted in more than 80% recovery of the permeate flux. This novel SB-AnMBR treatment system exhibited good potential for a sustainable biological treatment option for the PHL from the dissolving pulp production industries. In general SB-AnMBR can be adopted as an efficient treatment alternative for industries producing very high COD (80-100 g/L) biodegradable waste stream. In addition, it has also good potential of producing methane for a possible production of bioenergy.

In this work a simplified model for hybrid bioreactor is developed to determine output parameters like exiting substrate concentration in bulk liquid, average substrate flux in the biofilm, effective and total biofilm thickness. The model is based on mass balance of both carbonaceous substrate and biomass under suspended and attached growth simultaneously along with substrate mass transport into the biofilm. The proposed model has also been validated with the results obtained from experimental study with municipal wastewater considering as a low strength wastewater with no inhibition. There is a flexibility of the proposed model making it a versatile one to find out the exiting substrate concentration both in hybrid bioreactor as well as in a completely mixed biofilm reactor (CMBR). The book caters to academics and practitioners working in the field of advanced wastewater treatment.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is presented in groundwater and drinking water from industrial, water or wastewater treatment, and military/aerospace sources. NDMA is suspected human carcinogen and en emerging groundwater contaminant listed as priority pollutant in United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Contaminated Candidate List 3 (CCL-3) and requires many water utilities to monitor for NDMA. It has been detected at several Department of Defense (DoD) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sites in aquifers, where testing, production, or disposal of Jet fuel (Aerozine-50) unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) occurred. NDMA is produced in environment by natural oxidation of the Jet fuels. NDMA characteristics of miscibility in water, low vapor pressure, and low octanol water partition coefficient make treating with air stripping, bioaccumulation, adsorption, flocculation and coagulation, and reverse osmosis inefficient at removing it from contaminated water [31]. Currently, ultraviolet irradiation (UV) by pump-and-treat is the most commonly used and efficient technology to treat NDMA to date. However, due to large energy consumption of technology to break bonds of NDMA, it is very expensive to implement. The objective of this thesis is to confirm the feasibility of using a fluidized bed bioreactor (FBR as alternative technology for treating NDMA. This is a preliminary performance assessment study of pilot-scale FBR consisting of an efficient fixed-film bioreactor seeded with Rodococcus ruber ENV 425. ENV 425 is a propanotroph that uses cometabolic reaction to degrade NDMA, which results in the products of formate, nitrate, nitrite, methylamine, and carbon dioxide during its growth onto propane [56]. There are currently no federal regulations for NDMA in drinking water in terms of maximum contaminant level (MCL). However, it has grabbed the attention of many regulation agencies due to its public health risk of carcinogenicity and the growing quantity detected in drinking water sources. One of those agencies leading the way in making drinking water standards for it is California office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) [34]. California OEHHA has established a public health goal (PHG) for NDMA in drinking water of three parts-per-trillion (ppt or ng/L) based on cancer risk calculations [3]. The New Mexico Environmental Department initially established a 10 ng/L cleanup goal for NDMA at NASA White Sands Test Facility (WSTF), but in September of 2011, that requirement was changed to 4.2ng/L. The NASA WSTF is located near Las Cruces, New Mexico, and has a 4 mile radius contaminated groundwater plume under site from historical activities related to disposal, testing, evaluating of rocket engines, space flight components, and rocket propulsions systems in support of Apollo missions. The contaminated groundwater was first just treated by the UV irradiation system at plume-front facility location, but later on the Mid-Plume Interception and Treatment System (MPITS) facility was installed to treat groundwater that was isolated by geological fault in area by UV irradiation. The Pilot-scale FBR is stationed parallel with the UV remediation system, and it is supplied with contaminated groundwater from after the air stripper at rate ranging from 1-5 gpm. The influent and effluent water from the FBR was constantly monitored by different sampling and analysis procedures twice a week to demonstrate the effective performance of the FBR in treating NDMA. The FBR system was built upon the successful results from the bench-scale model, which was conducted by Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CB & I), formally known as the Shaw Environmental Group, and Envirogen Technologies, Inc. The bench-scale effectively treated NDMA concentrations from 10-80[mu]g/L to below 10ng/L to below 10ng/L. The pilot-scale was operated under different conditions and tested by challenge experiments to simulate interruptions in operating conditions observed at full-scale systems. The pilot-scale study was also just as successful with NDMA concentrations from 1 [mu]g/L to below 4.2 ng/L. The seeded microorganism Rodococcus ruber ENV 425, which is attached onto the granular active carbon media in FBR column vessel, was out competed by another propanotroph organism Mycobacterium spp., and that organism was responsible for biodegrading NDMA. The GAC adsorption study proved that biodegradation is the main mechanism for removing NDMA since the GAC had little adsorption capacity for NDMA. This is shown by column experiments results of low GAC adsorption capacity of NDMA at
