Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I wasn't going to get anywhere without causing a stir. The way I saw it, if people don't gossip or talk about you, you are not making waves. And I was making huge rip curls on Geordie Shore.'Now into its tenth season, Holly Hagan has had viewers of Geordie Shore glued to their screens ever since the very first episode. Since appearing as a fresh-faced eighteen-year-old in 2011, Holly has captivated audiences with her hot tub antics and flame-red hair as the Geordies have flirted their way around the world, from Newcastle to Magaluf, Cancun and Australia.Fame and fortune, though, came at a price - the road from the call centre to the celebrity circuit has been far from smooth. In this action-packed, revealing, funny and sometimes heart-breaking memoir, Holly recounts her life in and out of the limelight with brutal honesty - from her childhood days when she was badly bullied, her shocking take on sex and dating and what really goes on behind-the-scenes on the UK's biggest reality TV show, including the truth behind her blossoming relationship with housemate Kyle.Filled with genuinely touching stories and inside accounts of what they don't show you on TV, Holly has laid herself bare, first physically and now emotionally. If you think you know all there is to know about Holly from Geordie Shore, think again.

Book excerpt: The story is about Jimmy Bland and his early years from being born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, to his wedding day twenty-three years later. He attempts to deal with the normal trials and experiences of a kid growing up in a tough region plus the added concern he develops about his speech, pronunciation of certain words and the 'Geordie' dialect and his perception that he is not accepted as a true 'Geordie'. The early years: 'His dad had told him he would have to learn when to walk away and just let the taunts go right over his head but there would be times when he would have to stand on his own two feet and give back as much as he took whatever the consequences and he would find usually if he did this then the bully would stop bothering him'. He thought about his aggressive nature and confrontational streak that sometimes surfaced and wondered if it had anything to do with suppressing his emotions and should he be talking about the issue instead of immediately going on the defensive and physically retaliating. But then he would think, "if all that was taken from me in an attempt to change me, then I would not be Jimmy Bland, would I?" Early teenage years: Eddie explained as best he could the different pronunciation of certain words depending on where the person was from. Eddie called Newcastle people 'Townies' and the word 'Geordie' was mostly applied to those who lived around the River Tyne and north of Newcastle.

Book excerpt: Geordie Doran ranks as one of the most remarkable fighting soldiers of the twentieth century. Growing up in Jarrow during the Depression years of the 1930s, Geordie signed up as a private soldier in 1946 and embarked on a career spanning 40 years. He saw active service in Germany, Cyprus, the Korean War and Suez; he became an expert in jungle warfare in Malaya and in Borneo, as well as on key special operations in the deserts of Oman and Yemen, and Colonel Gaddafi's Libya. After returning to England in the early 1970s, a serious road accident curtailed his frontline soldiering career; however, he found a new and vital role as a permanent staff instructor with 23 SAS (TA) training the cream of recruits. He left the SAS in 1972, but could not settle into civilian life and found himself a job as a storeman in the SAS Quartermaster's stores – a job which lasted another 12 years, during which time he equipped many famous SAS characters for their famous clandestine missions.

Book excerpt: There’s a poltergeist in Joe Quinn’s house, and Davie is determined to discover its source in this lively, hopeful graphic storybook from David Almond and Dave McKean. Joe Quinn has been telling everyone about the poltergeist in his house, but no one believes him. No one, that is, except Davie. Davie’s felt the inexplicable presence in the Quinns’ house and seen random objects fly through the air. And there’s something else . . . a memory of Davie’s beloved sister and a feeling deep down that it might just be possible for ghosts to exist. Full of thoughts of hauntings and grief and God, Davie hovers on a precipice of uncertainty and possibility, a space that storyteller David Almond occupies comfortably and returns to again and again — here paired once more with the dynamic, dreamlike mixed-media art of Dave McKean.

His focus is on fiction that gives pleasure, and he is ardent in defence of books that for whatever reason sit uneasily in the present moment.

Book excerpt: Why is the North East the most distinctive region of England? Where do the stereotypes about North Easterners come from, and why are they so often misunderstood? In this wideranging new history of the people of North East England, Dan Jackson explores the deep roots of Northumbrian culture--hard work and heavy drinking, sociability and sentimentality, militarism and masculinity--in centuries of border warfare and dangerous and demanding work in industry, at sea and underground. He explains how the landscape and architecture of the North East explains so much about the people who have lived there, and how a 'Northumbrian Enlightenment' emerged from this most literate part of England, leading to a catalogue of inventions that changed the world, from the locomotive to the lightbulb. Jackson's Northumbrian journey reaches right to the present day, as this remarkable region finds itself caught between an indifferent south and a newly assertive Scotland. Covering everything from the Venerable Bede and the prince-bishops of Durham to Viz and Geordie Shore, this vital new history makes sense of a part of England facing an uncertain future, but whose people remain as distinctive as ever.

Book excerpt: Irresistible Force Darius Carsington is a spectacularly handsome rake with a rare intelligence and no heart, a man who divides his time between bedding loose-moraled women and writing scholarly papers. He finds society's "perfect darlings" exceedingly boring. But there's something intriguing, and not quite perfect, about faultless Lady Charlotte Hayward. He senses a crack under her polished surface, and finding it is a challenge he can't resist. Immovable Object Lady Charlotte is so beautiful, charming, and gracious that no one has noticed what an expert she is at Not Getting Married. Early on, she learned a painful lesson about trust . . . and temptation. In the years since, she's devoted her life to being all she ought to be—and she's not about to let a man like Carsington entice her to do everything she shouldn't. A Splendid Collision But the rules of attraction can easily overpower the rules of manners and morals, and sometimes even the best-behaved girl has to follow her instincts, even if it means risking it all.
