This book was released on 1976 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown, that a simple nonlinear model based upon plasma equations of motion and a wave equation for radio propagation is capable of predicting plasma irregularities and scintillations at the equator. The irregularities develop from a linear convective instability on the bottom of the F layer. Depleted regions, or bubbles, form and rise nonlinearly through the F peak, disturbing the top of the F layer. The equations of motion are integrated numerically, and then the parabolic equation is solved for propagation of a 300 MHz wave through the plasma. It is assumed that a modest total electron content of 5 x 10 to the 16th Power M( -2). From the radio wave solution scintillation indices are extracted as a function of time. Approximately two hours after the instability starts, S4 reaches 0.48, and the log power variance reaches 3.1 dB.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of global ionospheric research from the polar caps to equatorial regions It's more than a century since scientists first identified the ionosphere, the layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere that is ionized by solar and cosmic radiation. Our understanding of this dynamic part of the near-Earth space environment has greatly advanced in recent years thanks to new observational technologies, improved numerical models, and powerful computing capabilities. Ionosphere Dynamics and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of historic developments, recent advances, and future directions in ionospheric research. Volume highlights include: Behavior of the ionosphere in different regions from the poles to the equator Distinct characteristics of the high-, mid-, and low-latitude ionosphere Observational results from ground- and space-based instruments Ionospheric impacts on radio signals and satellite operations How earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth cause disturbances in the ionosphere The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Book excerpt: A numerical simulation of the nonlinear evolution of the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor instability using a set of equations appropriate for the equatorial F region ionosphere has been performed. Our results show that the irregularities produced by the instability grow on the bottomside of the F region peak, as predicted by linear theory, and then the irregularities nonlinearly bubble through to the topside, where linear theory predicts no irregularities. Fourier analysis of the irregularities show one-dimensional power-law power spectra for both the vertical and horizontal directions. (Author).

Modeling the Ionosphere-Thermosphere System brings together for the first time a detailed description of the physics of the IT system in conjunction with numerical techniques to solve the complex system of equations that describe the system, as well as issues of current interest. Volume highlights include discussions of: Physics of the ionosphere and thermosphere IT system, and the numerical methods to solve the basic equations of the IT system The physics and numerical methods to determine the global electrodynamics of the IT system The response of the IT system to forcings from below (i.e., the lower atmosphere) and from above (i.e., the magnetosphere) The physics and numerical methods to model ionospheric irregularities Data assimilation techniques, comparison of model results to data, climate variability studies, and applications to space weather Providing a clear description of the physics of this system in several tutorial-like articles, Modeling the Ionosphere-Thermosphere System is of value to the upper atmosphere science community in general. Chapters describing details of the numerical methods used to solve the equations that describe the IT system make the volume useful to both active researchers in the field and students.
Book Synopsis Modelling of Equatorial Phase and Amplitude Scintillations from OGO-6 and AE Irregularity Data by : Sunanda Basu
Download or read book Modelling of Equatorial Phase and Amplitude Scintillations from OGO-6 and AE Irregularity Data written by Sunanda Basu and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technique of modelling equatorial phase and amplitude scintillations from in-situ measurements of irregularity amplitude, ambient ionization density and irregularity power spectrum is outlined. The in-situ measurements do not directly provide information on irregularity layer thickness for which radar backscatter observations are utilized. The equatorial scintillation models developed from OGO-6 and AE-C in-situ measurements during the two solstices are presented. Considerable differences in the longitude variation of scintillations are predicted during the two solstices. The model estimates are in good agreement with the available ground based phase and amplitude measurements. Problems associated with the use of bottomside spread-F data for transionospheric propagation modelling at VHF/UHF are also discussed. (Author).
