Book excerpt: Autonomous control greatly reduces the demand on ground-based resources to keep satellites in a constellation and working reliably, which would be nearly impossible to do without such automation. Linear feedback control is primarily used to counter unexpected small perturbations and to maintain generally sub-optimal trajectories. Linearized approximation of the actual non-linear satellite dynamics cannot predict the "non-local" behavior far from the operating point and certainly not the "global" behavior throughout the state space. The objective of this thesis is development of a formation control and station keeping control laws for a constellation of satellites in a circular orbit. It is shown that by utilizing feedback linearization or nonlinear compensation techniques, an efficient nonlinear control design strategy may be implemented that leads to solutions valid for larger set point regulation, perturbations and station keeping problems. To assess the quality of the proposed control scheme, its performance is compared with that of linear pole placement controller and a nonlinear controller designed using potential function method in a number of simulation case studies. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed nonlinear control technique are also presented for formation control and station keeping.

Book excerpt: Aimed at students, faculty and professionals in the aerospace field, this book provides practical information on the development, analysis, and control of a single and/or multiple spacecraft in space. This book is divided into two major sections: single and multiple satellite motion. The first section analyses the orbital mechanics, orbital perturbations, and attitude dynamics of a single satellite around the Earth. Using the knowledge of a single satellite motion, the translation of a group of satellites called formation flying or constellation is explained. Formation flying has been one of the main research topics over the last few years and this book explains different control approaches to control the satellite attitude motion and/or to maintain the constellation together. The control schemes are explained in the discrete domain such that it can be easily implemented on the computer on board the satellite. The key objective of this book is to show the reader the practical and the implementation process in the discrete domain. Explains the orbital motion and principal perturbations affecting the satellite Uses the Ares V rocket as an example to explain the attitude motion of a space vehicle Presents the practical approach for different control actuators that can be used in a satellite

Book excerpt: This book systematically describes the concepts and principles for multi-satellite relative motion, passive and near passive formation designs, trajectory planning and control for fuel optimal formation maneuvers, and formation flying maintenance control design. As such, it provides a sound foundation for researchers and engineers in this field to develop further theories and pursue their implementations. Though satellite formation flying is widely considered to be a major advance in space technology, there are few systematic treatments of the topic in the literature. Addressing that gap, the book offers a valuable resource for academics, researchers, postgraduate students and practitioners in the field of satellite science and engineering.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates several linear and nonlinear feedback control methods for satellite formation reconfigurations and compares them to a near optimal open loop, discrete-time, impulsive maneuver. The reconfigurations are done in terms of a set of relative parameters that define an orbit about the leader satellite (or center reference position if a leader satellite does not exist at the center of the formation). The purpose of the study is two-fold, to compare the control usage of continuous feedback control methods versus a discrete bum method and to determine if nonlinear control techniques offer significant improvement over more conventional linear control laws. Linear Quadratic Regulators (LQR), LQR with linearizing feedback, State Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) and sliding mode controllers are considered. Simulations showed that reconfigurations for small relative orbits were adequately controlled using linear techniques.

In addition to being reliable and upgradable, spacecraft formations will provide a means of performing a variety of tasks and missions that cannot be performed by a single satellite. Associated with spacecraft formations are a number of new and challenging problems in the area of spacecraft dynamics and control. Active control systems are required to maintain relative configurations to the accuracies demanded by tasks such as high resolution Earth and deep space imaging. In formation missions involving micro-satellites, fuel efficiency is of paramount importance. This study presents a number of control laws well suited to micro-satellite scale formation missions. The control laws are derived using control techniques such as linear quadratic regulator design, feedback linearization and disturbance accommodation to bring fuel requirements into a range feasible for micro-satellite missions. The CanX-4/5 mission, developed by the Space Flight Laboratory at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, is of particular interest. A control law that accommodates propulsion and attitude subsystem limitations associated with the CanX-4/5 system is presented, along with an extensive body of simulation data to aid in the mission design process.

Book excerpt: The novel concept of multiple spacecraft formation flying as a substitute for a single large vehicle will enhance future space mission performance. The benefits of a spacecraft formation include more cost effective synthetic aperture radar for observations, "graceful degradation" of the formation, flexibility of the satellites altering their roles, reduction of cost owing to the reduction of mass launched into orbit etc. A significant challenge in the domain of control design is to contrive a formation maintenance controller that will enable the member spacecrafts to maintain a desired relative orbit with minimal propellant expenditure. This thesis examines linear and nonlinear LEO formation control methodologies, one of each type, with the aim of evaluating them from a propellant budget, thrust level and error dynamics standpoint. A Linear Quadratic Regulator has been applied on $J_{2}$-perturbed Clohessy-Wiltshire dynamics. In order to remove the restriction of the applicability of Cartesian local vertical local horrizontal frame based control laws to only circular leader orbits, a sliding mode controller acting on a full nonlinear dynamical model has been implemented. This work also studies the effects of leader orbit eccentricity, inclination and formation radius on formation keeping fuel demand and tracking error. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the suitability of the control laws considered and various recommendations made.

The purpose for the project is to test and demonstrate new technologies the Air Force would be interested in for research and development. The primary mission of KnightSat is to show how a constellation of satellites can maintain relative position with each other autonomously using the Microwave Electro Thermal (MET) thruster. The secondary mission is to use multiple satellite imagery to obtain 3 dimensional stereo photographs of observable terrain. Formation flying itself has many possible uses for future applications. Selected missions that require imaging or data collection can be more economically accomplished using smaller multiple satellites. The MET thruster is a very efficient, but low thrust alternative that can provide thrust for a very long time, hence provide the low thrust necessary to maintain the satellites at a constant separation. The challenge is to design a working control algorithm to provide the desired output data to be used to command the MET thrusters. The satellites are to maintain a constant relative distance from each other, and use the least amount of fuel possible. If one satellite runs out of fuel before the other, it would render the constellation less useful or useless. Hence, the satellites must use the same amount of fuel in order to maintain an optimal operational duration on orbit.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the work completed during the reporting period cited above. A technique for maintaining nominal separation distance between adjacent satellites in an elliptically orbiting constellation is developed and parametric trade-off studies performed. This technique is based on an initial impulsive-type correction of the daughter spacecraft at the first perigee in order to shift the direction of the line of apsides by a small angle. The technique works well in Keplerian orbits. In the presence of perturbations the results are critically dependent on the amplitude of the shift angle. Without subsequent corrections near collision situations can exist over the long term. Additional feedback type of correctional control is recommended to prevent unwanted secular drifts. Two types of feedback control strategies are considered here: an application of the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory based on errors in position, and also based on a Lyapunov function using osculating orbital elements. A preliminary deployment strategy is introduced based on near Hohmann-type of transfer orbits, and shows deployment can be achieved in one orbit.

Book excerpt: An innovative dynamics and control algorithm is developed for a dual-nanosatellite formation flying mission. The principal function of this algorithm is to use regular GPS state measurements to determine the controlled satellite's tracking error from a set of reference trajectories in the local-vertical/local-horizontal reference frame. A linear state-feedback control law---designed using a linear quadratic regulator method---calculates the optimal thrusts necessary to correct this error and communicates the thrust directions to the attitude control system and the thrust durations to the propulsion system. The control system is developed to minimize the conflicting metrics of tracking error and DeltaV requirements. To reconfigure the formation, an optimization algorithm is designed using the analytical solution to the state-space equation and the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire state transition matrix to solve for dual-thrust reconfiguration maneuvers. The resulting trajectories require low DeltaV, use finite-time thrusts and are accurate in a fully nonlinear orbital environment. This algorithm will be used to control the CanX-4 & 5 formation flying demonstration mission. Finally, an analytical study of the stability of the formation flying algorithm is conducted. To facilitate the proof, the control algorithm is converted into a discrete-time linear time-varying system. Stability of the system is determined via discrete Floquet theory. This analysis is applied to the CanX-4 & 5 control laws for tracking along-track orbits, projected circular orbits, and quasi J2-invariant formations. In addition, an iterative method which numerically generates quasi periodic trajectories for a satellite formation is presented. This novel technique utilizes a shooting approach to the Newton method to close the relative deputy trajectory over a specific number of orbits, then fits the actual perturbed motion of the deputy with a Fourier series to enforce periodicity. This process is applied to two well-known satellite formations: a projected circular orbit and a J2-invariant formation. Compared to conventional formations, these resulting quasi-periodic trajectories require a dramatically lower control effort to maintain and could therefore be used to extend DeltaV-limited formation flying missions.
