Book excerpt: A new experimental apparatus for rock-specimen analysis has been developed in Laboratoire 3SR (Grenoble) to characterize the evolution under loading of the deformation mode, placing particular attention on the onset of strain localization and the post-localization regime in rocks. The experimental apparatus can be configured to apply true triaxial or plane strain conditions on prismatic specimens, with a confining pressure of up to 100 MPa. The three principal stresses are independently controlled to apply true triaxial conditions. When applying plane strain conditions, the stress perpendicular to the observed specimen's surface is proportionally varied as a function of the loading applied on the specimen, to satisfy the condition of zero strain along this direction. The prismatic specimen can be observed under loading, because its surface, orthogonal with the direction of the intermediate principal stress, is in contact with a hard window (sapphire), thus allowing pictures to be taken throughout the test, as well as enabling full-field measurement. Photographs are analyzed by digital image correlation (DIC) to measure displacement and strain fields. The new true triaxial apparatus is presented here, first with a description of the experimental setup and mechanical characteristics of the cell. Then, the experimental procedure adopted to apply and assess the speckle pattern on the sample's surface, as required for DIC, is detailed. Finally, selected results from a test performed with the true triaxial device on a Vosges sandstone sample, performed in plane strain compression, are shown. The onset of strain localization and the shear bands' pattern evolution are shown by means of incremental strain fields obtained by DIC.

Book excerpt: It has been ten years since I presented the paper entitled “A new model and theory on yield and failure of materials under the complex stress state” at the Sixth Conference on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials held at Kyoto, Japan in 1991. The proceedings edited by Jono and Inoue were published by Pergamon Press in 1991. At that conference Professor Murakami and I were invited to act as the chairperson and co-chairperson of a session, and I presented the paper at another session. Few days before the conference, I had given a seminar regarding the tw- shear strength theory and the unified strength theory at Nagoya Technological University. These were the first two presentations of the unified strength theory, although I had completed the research of the unified strength theory in 1990. The paper “Twin-shear strength theory and its generalization” was published in the English edition of Sciences in China, the top journal in China, in 1985. The th original generalized twin-shear strength theory was presented at the 16 International Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Congress held at Copenhagen in Denmark and MPA (MaterialPrüfungsAnstalt) at Stuttgart University, Germany in 1984. After this Congress I visited the MPA and School of Civil Engineering of Stuttgart University, and gave a seminar regarding the generalized twin-shear strength theory at MPA of Stuttgart University. Professor Otto Mohr (1835–1918) has had worked at the Stuttgart University. He was a very good professor, his lectures aroused great interest in his students.

It is hoped eventually to present a survey of the ductile field in a separate volume. The last chapter of this volume deals with the transition between the two fields. The scope of this survey has been limited to the mec.hanical properties of rock viewed as a material on the laboratory scale. Thus, the topic and approach is of a "materials science" kind rather than of a "structures" kind. We are dealing with only one part of the wider field of rock mechanics, which also includes structural or boundary value problems, for example, those of the stability of slopes, the collapse of mine openings, earth quakes, the folding of stratified rock, and the convec tive motion of the earth's mantle. One topic thus ex cluded is the role of jointing, which it is commonly necessary to take into account in applications in engi neering and mining, and probably often in geology too.
