Soybean plants fix a large amount of N by root nodules symbiotically associated with soil bacteria called "rhizobia". However, sole N2 fixation is often insufficient to support the vigorous vegetative and reproductive growth of soybean plants. For the maximum yield of soybean, it is necessary to use both N2 fixation by root nodules and nitrogen absorption from roots. This book introduces the promotive effects of deep placement of slow release N fertilisers on growth, N2 fixation activity and seed yield of soybean cultivated in some rotated paddy fields of Niigata prefecture, Japan, including rotated paddy fields and upland fields.

World soybean production is increasing especially in North and South America. Soybean seeds contain a high percentage of protein about 35-40%, and they require a large amount of nitrogen compared with other crops. Soybean plants make root nodules with rhizobia, and rhizobia can fix atmospheric N2 and give the fixed N to the host soybean plants. Also, soybean can absorb nitrogen usually nitrate from soil or fertilizers. The amount of total assimilated nitrogen in shoot is proportional to the soybean seed yield either from nitrogen fixation or from nitrogen absorption, and the nitrogen availability is very important for soybean cultivation. Maintenance of a high and long-term nitrogen fixation activity is very important for a high production of soybean. However, application of chemical nitrogen fertilizers usually depresses nodule formation and nitrogen fixation. Nitrate in direct contact with a nodulated part of roots causes severe inhibition of nodule growth and nitrogen fixation, although a distant part of nodules from nitrate application gives no or little effect. Deep placement of slow-release nitrogen fertilizers, coated urea, or lime nitrogen promoted the growth and seed yield and quality of soybean without depressing nitrogen fixation.

The study was conducted to compare the performance of soybean varieties in terms of growth and seed production using inorganic and organic N sources during the wet season at the UPLB experiment station. Two soybean varieties (PSB-Sy2 and BPI-Sy4) were fertilized with organic N (carabao manure and gliricidia leaves) at N level of 24 kg ha1 and inorganic N (24-30-30- kg ha1 N, P2O5 and K2O) sources. A control (without N fertilizer) was included and all treatments were inoculated with Rhizobium. No pesticide was applied but infestation was controlled by manual picking of larvae. The study was conducted in a split plot design with varieties as main-plot and N souces as sub-plot with three replications. Parameters such as plant height, leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR), above-ground and root biomass, number of nodules and plant moisture content (MC) were studied. Biomass produced, N concentration and N content in plant parts, total plant N content, partitioning of biomass and N in terms of harvest index (HI) and N harvest index (NHI), N use efficiency in terms of conversion to biomass (NUEb, g biomass g1 plant N) and grain (NUEg g grain dry weight g1 plant N), grain N utilization efficiency (NUEgn, g grain dry weight g1) grain N), seed yield and seed quality (germinability and storability) were comprared. Cultivated especially in the Midwest and South regions, soybean has established itself as one of the leading products of domestic agriculture and trade balance. Soybean was responsible for the formation of a complex structure of production, storage, processing and marketing in all countries where it is growing on a large scale. The great demand in the international market provided rapid expansion of this crop in Brazil, which occurred by the replacement of other cultures by soybean culture, and especially by the conquest of new agricultural frontiers. In relation to nitrogen fertilization efficiency in soybean crop, there are many doubts about the subject. In some situations, as in production systems under no-till with a high amount of straw on the soil, nitrogen fertilization can reduce the problem of nitrogen deficiency and also increase soybean crop yield, however, there is a limit of dose of nitrogen to be used and the soybean grain yield increase and the soybean price must compensate the nitrogen fertilization investment. This book will present results of researches conducted in the Northwest region of São Paulo State (Brazil), involving nitrogen fertilization in soybean under no-till system on the straw of sugarcane and on the straw of forage sorghum intercropped with Congo grass.

Book excerpt: Although soybean (Glycine max L.) yields have increased over the past decade, even greater improvement is in demand. Nontraditional practices such as applying nitrogen (N) to soybean for yield optimization, might be one way to meet this demand. Also, sulfur (S) is becoming a more important limiting nutrient in production due to higher yielding crops, lower S containing production inputs, and reduced supply from the environment. The N study involved two environments, irrigated and dryland, in Milan (35.9198° N, 88.7589° W) and Jackson (35.6145° N, 88.8139° W), TN in 2015 and 2016. Urea fertilizer treatments were 34, 67, and 101 kg N ha−1 (per hectare). Soybean height, nodes per plant, total biomass weight, biomass N concentration, total nodules per plant, total active nodules per plant, total adolescent nodules per plant, total nodule weight per plant, 100 seed weight, and yield were collected to evaluate treatment effects. Data analysis concluded that N applications significantly increased plant height, plant nodes, and plant biomass of soybean. However, N treatments significantly reduced active and adolescent nodule production. Soybean yield was not significantly increased by the N applications. The irrigated sites yielded at or below the dryland comparison, probably due to lodging, which may have compromised yield potential. The S study included soybean and corn (Zea mays L.) experiments, which were conducted in an S deficient soil in Milan, TN in 2015 and 2016. Ammonium sulfate treatments were 11, 23, and 34 kg S ha−1 (per hectare). Plant height, leaf S concentrations, seed S and N concentrations, 100 seed weight, and yield were collected to evaluate treatment effects. Data analysis concluded that S application significantly increased leaf S concentrations in corn but not soybean. Soybean and corn seed S was significantly increased but not seed N. Soybean yield was not increased, but corn yield was significantly increased 16% across all S rates, with no significant differences detected among S rates. Overall, results indicate N affected soybean growth and nodule development while the impact on yield was not demonstrated. In deficient soils, S fertilizer may improve corn yields, but may not be economical for soybean.

Merr.] plants can capture atmospheric nitrogen (N) through symbiotic relationships with soil bacteria in a process called "biological N fixation" (BNF), reducing the reliance on synthetic fertilizers. To meet growth of the global population and increasing demand for quality protein and oil, the need for soybean will inexorably grow. One of the challenges to further improve soybean seed yield is the high demand of N in comparison to cereals and other oilseed crops. Further characterization of the environmental and management effects on BNF process is needed to enhance its capacity for supplying N to the crop. This dissertation is organized in four chapters outlining these topics through a series of experiments describing the association between plant nutrition, BNF, and seed composition with seed yield generation. Chapter 1 presents a synthesis analysis on a nutrient-based physiological framework on four key variables determining N efficiency in soybean (i.e., seed yield, N seed concentration, total N uptake, and nitrogen harvest index). Results showed that N partitioning to the seeds is the main parameter responsible in seed yield variation instead of N seed concentration. An experiment in Chapter 2 explored the hypothesis of the carbon (C) cost of BNF on biomass production, yield formation, and seed composition. Chapters 3 and 4 explored the historical component behind seed yield generation and seed composition. Results from Chapter 3 describe the shift in allocation of reproductive biomass using the allometric approach, whereas Chapter 4 provides a detailed description of the dynamics of oil and fatty acid accumulation under two N regimes.
