Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New System of Meteorology, Designed for Schools and Private Students, Vol. 1: Descriptive and Explanatory of All the Facts, and Demonstrative of All the Causes and Laws of Atmospheric Phenomena The fearful nature and awful grandeur of clouds, rain, hail, snow, whirlwinds, tornadoes, thunder and lightning, forcibly im pressed me from my earliest childhood. Before attaining the age of four years, I inquired for their cause. My parents resolved these phenomena into the Ultimate Cause, God. Accepting this solution, I wished to know how he did it, and why he did it? Not receiving satisfactory answers to these questions, they became life problems to me. They had, and ever will have, such a fasci nation for me as to engross my entire attention when I am in their presence. While a lad of tender years, no cloud appeared above the hori zon without my scrutiny as to its aspects, and noting the changes in its form and color. After night, no thunder cloud loomed up in the sky without my watching, while in sight, the play of the lightning in its folds, and studying its structure in its strata and convolutions. Book excerpt: Decades of evolving U.S. policy have led to three sectors providing weather servicesâ€"NOAA (primarily the National Weather Service [NWS]), academic institutions, and private companies. This three-sector system has produced a scope and diversity of weather services in the United States second to none. However, rapid scientific and technological change is changing the capabilities of the sectors and creating occasional friction. Fair Weather: Effective Partnerships in Weather and Climate Services examines the roles of the three sectors in providing weather and climate services, the barriers to interaction among the sectors, and the impact of scientific and technological advances on the weather enterprise. Readers from all three sectors will be interested in the analysis and recommendations provided in Fair Weather.

Book excerpt: Despite being perhaps the foremost British meteorologist of the twentieth century, Reginald Sutcliffe has been understudied and underappreciated. His impact continues to this day every time you check the weather forecast. Reginald Sutcliffe and the Invention of Modern Weather Systems Science not only details Sutcliffe’s life and ideas, but it also illuminates the impact of social movements and the larger forces that propelled him on his consequential trajectory. Less than a century ago, a forecast of the weather tomorrow was considered a practical impossibility. This book makes the case that three important advances guided the development of modern dynamic meteorology, which led directly to the astounding progress in weather forecasting—and that Sutcliffe was the pioneer in all three of these foundational developments: the application of the quasi-geostrophic simplification to the equations governing atmospheric behavior, adoption of pressure as the vertical coordinate in analysis, and development of a diagnostic equation for vertical air motions. Shining a light on Sutcliffe’s life and work will, hopefully, inspire a renewed appreciation for the human dimension in scientific progress and the rich legacy bequeathed to societies wise enough to fully embrace investments in education and basic research. As climate change continues to grow more dire, modern extensions of Sutcliffe’s innovations increasingly offer some of the best tools we have for peering into the long-term future of our environment.

This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WIS:dom® (Weather-Informed energy Systems: for design, operations and markets) optimization planning model is the state-of-the-art energy model developed by Vibrant Clean Energy, LLC (VCE®). It is the first commercial co-optimization model of energy grids that was built from the ground up to incorporate vast volumes of data; starting with high-resolution weather and demand data. WIS:dom®-P simultaneously co-optimizes the capacity expansion requirements (generation, transmission, and storage) and the dispatch requirements (production cost, power flow, reserves, ramping, and reliability) for the entire electric (energy) grid of interest. Not only does WIS:dom® co-optimize these critically linked properties, it was developed from the ground up to work with “big data”. The model can determine the cost/benefit ratios for new HVDC transmission lines, compared with other technologies. It can also determine the risk and rewards from retiring existing generators for the topology of the transmission infrastructure; simultaneously to determining how more variable generation is deployed to replace them. WIS:dom® utilizes high-resolution (spatially and temporally) weather data to determine resource properties over vast spatial-temporal horizons. Thus, WIS:dom® can be used on scales as small as campuses, cities, counties or states/provinces; but uniquely can also be used for sovereign entities and continents. Moreover, these scales can be nested, allowing high-fidelity local modeling accompanied with lower-fidelity larger areas to create feedbacks within the model that simulate outside influences on local markets. The model relies on publically available data where possible, and contains default values for generators, transmission, storage, production cost and resource siting. However, WIS:dom® was designed from the beginning to allow “plug-and-play” capability, whereby it can take advantage of customized datasets required for detailed modeling of specific questions, markets or balancing areas. For example, higher-resolution weather data over a utility or ISO; or proprietary heat rates for generators within a utility. The modeling framework is unique and consistent across various scales facilitating more transparent analysis between results derived. With WIS:dom® new opportunities are identified due to the co-optimization detecting patterns ignored by other modeling endeavors. The WIS:dom® optimization model allows datasets to be added for specific local interests. For example, WIS:dom® can be deployed for any country or continent around the globe. The model requires the local datasets (or uses the default global one) and then can study various questions of interest – such as greenhouse gas emission, HVDC transmission links, variable generation and reliability, water consumption, air pollution, electric vehicle penetrations, electric heating, jobs and tax revenues, and more.

This book reviews historic developments and recent technological advancements in GEO and polar orbiting meteorological satellites. It explores the evolution of these remote sensing technologies and their capabilities to monitor short- and long-term changes in weather patterns in response to climate change. Satellites developed by various countries, such as U.S. meteorological satellites, EUMETSAT, and Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Indian satellite platforms are reviewed. This book also discusses international efforts to coordinate meteorological remote sensing data collection and sharing. This title provides a ready and quick reference for information about meteorological satellites. It serves as a useful tool for a broad audience that includes students, academics, private consultants, engineers, scientists, and teachers.
