Was too much engaged with the crusades to pay attention to the affairs of Ireland. During this and several succeeding reigns, that kingdom was a scene of confusion and anarchy, with the additional grievance that, in the reign of Edward I. It was invaded by the Scots. In the year 1394, Richard II. Passed over to Ireland with an army, and by gentle measures endeavoured to conciliate the affections of the princes and nobility. But, in his absence from England, the malcon tents digested the scheme of dethroning him. Upon his return, he was betrayed into the hands of his rival the Duke of Hereford, and deposed by Parliament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New System of Geography, Vol. 4 of 6: In Which Is Given, a General Account of the Situation and Limits, the Manners, History, and Constitution, of the Several Kingdoms and States in the Known World; And a Very Particular Description of Their Subdivisions and Dependencies; Their Cities and Tow Of the many charts extant of Germany, that by Homann published in the year 1741, and methodically illuminated according to Schatzs. principles: with the large charts executed on four sheets by Eisenschmid, and published also by Homann, are the most useful. But of how little service these and all the other charts hitherto extant of Germany are, will appear upon a stricter enquiry into their intrinsic value, from the excellent Mappa critica Germania:, executed with unspeakable labour by professor Mayer, and published in 1750, by Homann's heirs. In consequence of which we hitherto know the true situation and distance of about twenty places only, and Germany is, by the old geographers, extended about a whole degree too far to the east. It is therefore much to be wished, for the honour and benefit of Germany, that the patriotic proposal of the Cosmographical Society may be happily carried into execution; according to which each state of the Empire should suffer a Cabinet-Atlas to be taken of their territory by the German Surveying-office, which is under this name incorporated with the Cosmographical Society, and then permit a general chart to be engraved therefrom, which might be afterwards used for executing a chart of all Germany, But as it would require above half a century before a new and complete Atlas of Germany could be formed, even were die execution of this excellent and laudable proposal set about immediately, we muff, in the mean time, content ourselves with Homann's newest Atlas of Germany, which notwithstanding all its imperfections, is the best and most complete, nay, the only work of its kind. It contains all the charts of Germany which Homann has published from the first till the end of the year 1752, the number of which amounts to one hundred and twenty-five. The charts from the year 1753, are collected for a new volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. However, during the preceding centuries a large body of English-language literature relevant to the field of special geography was published. Four Centuries of Special Geography lists all the works published before 1888 and includes descriptions of each entry and notes on later editions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography is a component of Encyclopedia of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Geographical perceptions can be traced from very ancient cultures, although geography as a science started its development during the eighteen century, it was firmly established after the Darwinian revolution and many of its fundamentals appeared during the nineteenth century. The history of geography is closely connected with the history of human society Geography embraces both the physical and human worlds, and aims to bridge natural and human sciences. For a geographer, although the environment and its conservation is a crucial item, it is also fundamentally concerned with the living standards of humankind. Although its wide embrace may be seen as a weakness, diversification is also strength and an attraction. Approaches are multidisciplinary, exploring the complex linkages between the cultural and the natural. These favor cross-cultural communication and mutual understanding at a global scale. There is a geographical basis to most of the outstanding political problems, and geographical reasons to explain them. The subject matter of the geography theme is presented basically on how the subject matter is taught presently at the universities, and following the many paths its practitioners are following in doing research. It introduces modern subject matters and goes much further than a simple description of places and travels. The theme has been divided into four main topics: Foundations, Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Technical matters. The scope of the foundation topic is to present an overview of the basis of the geographical field, its scope, history, methods, and its importance in education. The chapters included are Main Stages of the Development, Theory and Methods, and Geographical Education. The Physical Geography topic includes the historical background of the geographical study of the Earth natural environment, and the main fields cultivated by geographers. It consists of eight chapters on basic research fields, which are Geomorphology, Climatology, Hydrology, Biogeography, Soil Geography, Coastal Systems, Ocean Geography, Mountain Geoecology, and two chapters on environmental issues: Natural Hazards and Land Degradation and Desertification. In the Human Geography topic six chapters discuss the more current fields, that is: Population, Cultural and Social, Agricultural and Rural, Industries and Transport, Economic Activities and Urban Geography. Three chapters present subjects developed more recently: Medical, Political and Tourism geographies. Finally, the Regional approach is presented as the most traditional and integrative field. These volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.
