Book excerpt: This Census of Rabelais Copies reflects the digital revolution in library cataloguing, incorporating a complete rechecking for early Rabelais copies, notably in the Worldcat database. Every copy recorded has been further verified in the catalogues of the individual libraries concerned. Alongside numerous corrections and additions to the 1987 publication, based on excellent bibliographical and more general scholarship, this Census increases the total number of known copies of Rabelais, dated between 1532 and 1626, and in public hands, from about 750 to nearly 1100, of which well over 100 are available for consultation on-line. Of particular interest are the discovery of nine copies of the Almanach pour l’an 1535 (NRB 095), the discovery of a previously un-recorded edition by Rabelais of Hippocrates’s Prognostikon (NRB 109.5), and the re-emergence in Moscow of the Pantagruel of 1533 (NRB 007), with the Chonicques du grant Roy Gargantua (NRB 122) and the Pantagrueline prognostication (NRB 016) previously recorded in Dresden. Ce Census of Rabelais Copies reflète la révolution numérique dans le catalogage des bibliothèques, en incorporant une nouvelle vérification complète des exemplaires anciens de Rabelais, notamment dans la base de données Worldcat. Chaque exemplaire recensé a fait l'objet d'une vérification supplémentaire dans les catalogues des bibliothèques concernées. Outre de nombreuses corrections et ajouts à la publication de 1987, fondés sur d'excellentes recherches bibliographiques et sur une recherche plus générale, ce Census fait accroître le nombre total d'exemplaires connus de Rabelais, datés de 1532 à 1626 et en mains publiques, d'environ 750 à près de 1100, dont plus d'une centaine sont consultables en ligne. The episode, which playfully and grotesquely treats the relation of Carnival to Lent, occurs in Rabelais's Fourth Book, his last and most artfully crafted novel. Samuel Kinser argues that the text has been distorted because critics have not attended to the episode's performative as well as literary contexts, overlooking the innovative use Rabelais made in his work of his immediate world.
