Book Synopsis Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Nuclear Risks by : Katsuhiro Kamae
Download or read book Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Nuclear Risks written by Katsuhiro Kamae and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers seismic probabilistic risk assessment (S-PRA) and related studies which have become more important to increase the safety of nuclear facilities against earthquakes and tsunamis in the face of the many uncertainties after the Fukushima accident. The topics are (1) Active faults and active tectonics important for seismic hazard assessment of nuclear facilities,(2) Seismic source modeling and simulation and modeling techniques indispensable for strong ground motion prediction, and (3) PRA with external hazard and risk communication. The Fukushima accident has showed us the limitations of the deterministic evaluation approach to external events (an earthquake and tsunami) in which there are many uncertainties. Furthermore, public anxiety regarding nuclear safety because of an unexpected threat caused by an earthquake or tsunami is growing. The current policy on the estimation of the design basis of ground motion as well as tsunami height still has not been improved following the Fukushima accident. In particular, the risk concept in a nuclear system regarding seismic motion and a tsunami beyond the design basis is indispensable. Therefore, research and development for PRA enhancing nuclear safety are being actively pursued not only in Japan but also worldwide. This book provides an opportunity for readers to consider the future direction of nuclear safety vis-à-vis natural disasters.
Book Synopsis A New Method for Determining the Physical Parameters of Large Soil and Rock Samples in Situ by : E. E. Bliamptis
Download or read book A New Method for Determining the Physical Parameters of Large Soil and Rock Samples in Situ written by E. E. Bliamptis and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method is introduced for determining the electrical and mechanical parameters of large samples of materials in situ. A set of linear electrodes in boreholes forms a square pattern; positive and negative electrical potentials on alternate electrodes create symmetry planes which define several 'cells'; a given fraction of electric current leaves an electrode and reaches a corresponding electrode. It is thus possible to obtain an impedance characteristic for each cell. The situation is basically two-dimensional, so a Schwarz-Christoffel transformation may be used followed with electrical calculations to obtain the conductivity and the permittivity of the cell material. The mechanical parameters of the cells are obtained in a similar manner. A mechanical disturbance is generated in the central borehole and the travel time to the other boreholes is measured along with the attenuation. The mechanical parameters are computed and correlated with the electrical parameters. (Author Modified Abstract)

Book Synopsis Understanding Faults by : David Tanner
Download or read book Understanding Faults written by David Tanner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Faults: Detecting, Dating, and Modeling offers a single resource for analyzing faults for a variety of applications, from hazard detection and earthquake processes, to geophysical exploration. The book presents the latest research, including fault dating using new mineral growth, fault reactivation, and fault modeling, and also helps bridge the gap between geologists and geophysicists working across fault-related disciplines. Using diagrams, formulae, and worldwide case studies to illustrate concepts, the book provides geoscientists and industry experts in oil and gas with a valuable reference for detecting, modeling, analyzing and dating faults. - Presents cutting-edge information relating to fault analysis, including mechanical, geometrical and numerical models, theory and methodologies - Includes calculations of fault sealing capabilities - Describes how faults are detected, what fault models predict, and techniques for dating fault movement - Utilizes worldwide case studies throughout the book to concretely illustrate key concepts
Book Synopsis Fault-Tolerant Control of Deterministic Input/Output Automata by : Melanie Schuh
Download or read book Fault-Tolerant Control of Deterministic Input/Output Automata written by Melanie Schuh and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with active fault-tolerant control of discrete event systems modeled by deterministic Input/Output (I/O) automata. Active fault-tolerant control realizes three operating modes - nominal control, fault diagnosis and controller reconfiguration. A new fault-tolerant controller which autonomously ensures the fulfillment of the control aim, both, in the faultless and the faulty case is developed. The control aim is to steer the plant into a desired final state while guaranteeing the avoidance of illegal transitions. Corresponding to the three operating modes, the proposed integrated fault-tolerant controller consists of a tracking controller, a diagnostic unit and a reconfiguration unit. As long as no fault is present, the tracking controller controls the plant in a feedback loop in order to guarantee the fulfillment of the control aim. At the same time the diagnostic unit detects whether a fault occurred. If a fault is detected, a novel active diagnosis method is used in order to identify the present fault as well as the current state of the faulty plant. The reconfiguration unit uses the diagnostic result provided by the diagnostic unit to reconfigure the tracking controller. As a main result, it is proved that the plant in the fault-tolerant control loop fulfills the control aim in the faultless as well as in the faulty case if the control loop is recoverable. The applicability of the fault-tolerant control method is demonstrated by means of a handling process at the Handling System HANS.
