However, these methods experienced several major deficiencies such as stress concentration at the end of the specimens because of inadequate gripping and loading eccentricity and nonuniform fracture plane because of difficulties in aligning and centering the specimens during testing. This study presents the details of a new method of testing concrete under uniaxial tension. The method was developed to overcome the difficulties associated with testing methods adopted in the previous research studies. A full description of the wooden molds used in casting the specimens and the loading arrangements including the end grips, universal joints, and frame in which the specimens were tested under uniaxial tension are presented. As expected, all the tested specimens were fractured at the middle where the cross-sectional area was reduced by 20 %. Also, no crushing failure or slippage was observed at the ends of the tested specimens.

Book excerpt: The current paper presents a new method for testing direct tensile strength of unsaturated geomaterials, guided by a method developed for concrete testing (Hannant et al. 1999). The developed equipment is used for measurement of direct tensile strength of unsaturated reactive basaltic clay soils and crushed rocks stabilized with cementitious additives. The tensile characteristics of soils were tested at water contents in excess of liquid limit and those close to optimum water content. Stabilized crushed rocks were tested at early and cured states after mixing. Full stress-strain characteristics were measured with the aid of precision transducers and electronic data acquisition. The equipment is capable of measuring tensile strengths of soil slurries (about 1 kPa), as well as cement stabilized crushed rocks (up to about 1 MPa).

Book excerpt: The use of steel-fiber reinforcement as an alternative to conventional reinforcement of various concrete structures has been limited in the construction industry. This is because of the fact that, unlike traditional reinforcement, the performance characterization of steel-fiber concrete is not standardized, because the fibers are distributed throughout the concrete section. Whereas direct tensile resistance is the performance measurement required for design, the steel-fiber industry has yet to actively employ direct tensile testing of steel fibers. The tensile response of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete has been investigated. The primary purpose of this paper is to present a robust new direct tension test method. This method is able to determine the uniaxial tensile response of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete. The method uses a three-dimensional "hourglass"-shaped tapered specimen. This paper also focuses on developing a practical method to determine the average tensile force per fiber.

Book excerpt: Since direct tensile testing is time-consuming and expensive, the Brazilian test may overestimate the tensile strength of rocks because of its biaxial stress instead of the uniaxial tension condition, an alternative testing method is required to determine tensile strength of intact rock samples. The aim of this paper is to introduce a new push-pull tensile testing apparatus (PPTA), which can be used for determining direct tensile strength of cylindrical intact rock specimens. The PPTA introduces a new clamping mechanism that can also be utilized for the determination of conventional direct tensile strength of intact rock specimens. During the study, direct tensile tests and indirect Brazilian tests were carried out using rock specimens and artificial rock specimens that were made by using graded river sand, cement, and water mixtures to compare results obtained from the PPTA tests. Results of the experimental study have shown that there is a good correlation between the results obtained from the direct tensile tests and the PPTA. In addition, elastic and elasto-plastic numerical modeling studies were also carried out using the three-dimensional finite difference method (FLAC 3-D) to investigate stress development within rock sample during testing and failure initiation. Results of the modeling studies showed that failure of the core sample is due to maximum principal tensile stresses and crack initiation starts from the outer periphery of the core and propagates inside the center, which is an acceptable failure mode for direct tensile testing. Finally, results of the experimental and numerical studies have shown that push-pull tensile testing apparatus (PPTA) is a practical and reliable tool for determining direct tensile strength of intact rocks. Because it does not require sample preparation, it can easily be used either in laboratory or in situ.

Book excerpt: Sustained postcracking tensile resistance is a fundamental mechanical characteristic of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). This research program developed a simple, reliable direct tension test (DTT) method that can generate the uniaxial tensile mechanical response for both cast and extracted UHPFRC samples. The developed test method emulates DTT methods already commonly used in the mechanical testing of metals, thus addressing many of the hurdles that can hinder the implementation of new test methods. It was demonstrated to be applicable to two UHPFRCs with two different steel fiber reinforcement contents in seven total sets of specimens. The test method can facilitate the development of appropriate quality control processes for UHPFRC, the advancement of UHPFRC mixture designs, and the development of strain-based UHPFRC structural design criteria.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current test methods such as ASTM 1609, ASTM 1550 and direct tensile test are used for evaluating the mechanical properties of Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) and to determine the quality of mixture in design and construction practice. These test methods show high variability in the results, requires large specimen and complicated test setup. An ideal material test method for FRC should give consistent results in determining mechanical properties such as peak strength and residual strengths. Moreover, current test methods are expensive and time-consuming as more specimens are needed to acquire reliable test results. Double Punch Test (DPT) is a simple, reliable and consistent test method for evaluating the post-cracking behavior of FRC. DPT originally developed to determine the tensile strength of plain concrete, can also be used for evaluation of peak load and post-peak behavior of FRC and Ultra-High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-FRC). This method has a simple test setup and is easier to conduct in comparison to other test methods. DPT experimental test results are seen to be more consistent than the other test methods currently in practice. The simplicity of test setup, reliability of results (low scatter due to the higher cracking surface) and smaller specimens (fewer materials used) are the major advantages of using DPT method for evaluation of post cracking response of FRC and UHP-FRC. In this research, the application of double punch test is validated for FRC and the same method has been used and developed to confirm the suitability for UHP-FRC material in determining tensile strength and behavior in post cracking phase. However, there still exist some potential issue in the DPT method that needs to be resolved. The circumferential extensometer that is used to determine the total crack opening displacement in DPT is an expensive instrument. This limits the use of DPT method in most of the industrial and research laboratories. The measurement of crack width and inspection of a number of cracks are the important parameter for evaluating the characteristics of any concrete material. It is time-consuming to measure the crack width in a test by conventional visual inspection and automated crack width measurement is indispensable. This research mainly focuses on the deriving a simple formula for estimating average and maximum crack width using the axial deformation data and optimize the time taken for each DPT test. The relation would remove the need of using the expensive circumferential extensometer for the test. Thus, DPT could be used to evaluate and compare the quality of mixture for FRC and UHP-FRC by using a simple arrangement of LVDTs.
