The former work was prepared "in the belief that Latin composition can best be taught directly in connection with the reading of the Latin authors. Its purpose is to furnish pupils with sufficient material for oral and written practice in Latin composition while reading Caesar and Cicero. Its method contemplates the study and recitation of the oral exercises as a part of each day's lesson, either in the advance or the daily review (preferably the latter), and of the written exercises at stated periods corresponding to the progress of the class in the Latin text, - the important thing being to have both oral and written work done while the passages on which they are based are fresh in the mind. The text thus furnishes the vocabulary, the models for all the idioms, the principles of syntax, and the order and arrangement of words." The exercises are based upon outlying parts of Caesar and Cicero, unfamiliar to students in the earlier part of their college course. Parts I and II are designed specially for freshman work. They both cover practically the same ground, thus making it possible to use the book in successive years without employing the same exercise twice. In preparing the passages for translation into Latin two ends have been kept in view: first, to test the student's knowledge of forms and syntax at the places where data collected from the work of successive classes has shown the freshman student to be weak; and, second, to illustrate a few of the finer points of composition which cannot be adequately treated in the preparatory school. This latter feature renders the footnotes necessarily rather bulky. The exercises are arranged in a careful sequence, and should be used in the order in which they stand to secure the most satisfactory results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Composition for Classes Reading Caesar This little book has grown out of a need felt in my own Caesar classes for some easy but systematic work in Latin Composition. Its purpose is not to present in most comprehensive fashion all the peculiarities of Latin syntax, but by constant repetition to fix in the student's mind some of the simplest constructions of nouns and verbs. All special grammatical notes in the several lessons have been omitted, that the pupil may early form the habit of constant reference to his grammar. Since the book is to be used in connection with Caesar, the constructions emphasized are those recurring most frequently in his text. Imperatives and independent subjunctives have therefore been lightly touched upon. The more difficult varieties of final and consecutive clauses and of relative sentences have been purposely omitted, from the conviction that the child should understand the rule before he considers its exceptions. The finding of phrases illustrative of the principles of syntax introduced in each lesson has been left to the teacher as a valuable class-room exercise. It has been my own practice to have the sections marked "Class Work" written without the aid of the grammar, making each pupil depend for forms and rules entirely upon his own memory. I have also found that a clear tabular statement of the principles studied, with the proper references to the grammar, is of great help in reviewing.
