Tobacco became a mainstay of South Windsor's agricultural life in the early to mid-19th centuries, with mills on the Scantic and Podunk Rivers, tributaries of the Connecticut. Well into the 20th century, South Windor's children still attended some of the one- and two-room schoolhouses around town until the post-World War II baby boom and influx of new residents necessitated new buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation has always played an important role in Windsor Locks, a Connecticut River town in the north central part of the state named for the canal locks built here in 1829. Expansion continued after the arrival of the railroad in the late 1860s; today, the town is an aviation center with an international airport and an important air museum. Windsor Locks explores the one-hundred-fifty-year-old town through vintage images and lively narrative, into which are woven stories of the past drawn from interviews with longtime residents. Interesting historical details include New England's first Christmas tree, created on a local farm when, in the German custom, a Hessian soldier decorated a tree; and the first female governor to be elected in her own right, Ella Grasso, born and raised here.

Book excerpt: In 1824, a group of prominent Hartford businessmen formed the Connecticut River Company to construct a canal that would bypass the treacherous rapids of Enfield Falls and extend navigation along the Connecticut River. Soon boats were a frequent sight in the village of Windsor Locks, named after the locks of the canal that ran alongside Main Street. Mills also sprang up in the area, utilizing the canals water to power their manufacturing operations. Today the canal has taken on a more historical, ecological, and recreational significance. Home to diverse plant and animal species, it is an excellent place to enjoy sweeping views of the Connecticut River and to see the factories that played a big part in the regions history.

Book excerpt: "He wants to sit and visit at the kitchen table, and he can hardly wait to get on the road again." —From Chapter 1 Robert Kroetsch, one of Canada's most important writers, was a fierce regionalist with a porous yet resilient sense of "home." Although his criticism and fiction have received extensive attention, his poetry remains underexplored. This exuberantly polyvocal text, insightfully written by dennis cooley—who knew Kroetsch and worked with him for decades—seeks to correct that imbalance. The Home Place offers a dazzling, playful, and intellectually complex conversation drawing together personal recollections, Kroetsch's archival materials, and the international body of Kroetsch scholarship. For literary scholars and anyone who appreciates Canadian literature, The Home Place will represent the standard critical evaluation of Kroetsch's poetry for years to come.

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windsor, Connecticut was one of the three towns that united to form the Colony of Connecticut in the 17th century. A great deal of data concerning Windsor's early inhabitants can be garnered from this work, which is based on records in the possession of the Connecticut Historical Society. By far the largest source transcribed for this publication is the Matthew Grant, or "Old Church," Record, 1639-1681. Comprising the first half of the volume, the Matthew Grant Record consists of several thousand births, marriages, and deaths for Windsor families throughout much of the 17th century. Though not an "official record" of the town, it nonetheless is one of the most important sources of Windsor "vital records" in existence. Various addenda to the Matthew Grant Record are appended to the back of the book. The balance of the volume is made up of a variety of records, each of which has the virtue of placing a particular colonist in Windsor during the 17th or early 18th century, namely: (1) Town Votes, which speak loudly on the methods of town governance and the persons who were assigned to carry out tasks; (2) Lists of Freemen, 1669, 1703; (3) Documents Relating to the Church Controversy of 1669-1679, which affected towns throughout Connecticut; and (4) A Ratable List of Persons and Estates, 1686, representing the second longest record in the volume and disclosing the real and personal property (with the assessed values) for each property owner in town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
