Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Great Britain Green, like every one else who tries to compress the story of England into' one volume, had to take a selective view; for instance, he emphasized, in some centuries, literary history, in others, social. There are many gaps in his narrative, due to the imperative need of compres sion and to these gaps we owe his singularly full treat ment of other parts of our history. The Short History was not a complete statement it was not meant to be such but it is the account of what struck a man who possessed both knowledge and genius, as being the most important aspects of English History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Progress in Great Britain While thus indicating our sense of the importance of these subjects, let us not be supposed to be unaware how little we ourselves have been able to do in the following pages, for their elucidation or enforcement. If we have taken up a large portion of our available space in dealing with them, we cannot but feel, as we have all along painfully felt, that our entire two volumes would have been inadequate for their due development. Some day, so grand a subj ect will, we doubt not, meet with its own historian, who shall be worthy of it. Meantime, we com mend our own brief and imperfect notices to the reader's indulgence, and shall only be too happy if they at all obtain his sympathy. What ever their faults, they at least have been written by one who ardently desires to see his country, and all mankind, in the fullest possible enjoyment of all that is comprised in the noble words Civil and Reli gions Liberty, because he believes that those words, rightly understood and determinedly acted ou, will not only tend to elevate the indi vidual nature of man, but bring the entire human family into more harmonious relations, and raise it to an altogether higher level of domestic life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Colonial Empire of Great Britain The Colonial Empire of Great Britain has now existed for so long a period, and has assumed such vast proportions, that some account of its origin, and of the various fluctuations to which it has been subjected in the progress of the last three centuries, cannot be otherwise than useful and, I hope, acceptable to the reading portion of our countrymen. The interests, moreover, of our colonies are so closely linked with those of the mother country, and they have become so essential a part of her riches and power, that the later history of England can never be properly appreciated without a competent knowledge of the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Britain and the War And yet Count Bernstorff says the war would not have happened had not Russia been certain of the support of England. What about Germany? Did she feel certain what England would do? The correspondence is of peculiar interest as tending to controvert the German Ambassador's assertion that Germany was dragged int-o war. From the beginning of the critical relations between Austria and Russia, owing to the despatch of the Austrian ultimatum to Servia, Sir Edward Grey had regarded the matter as a quarrel between Austria and Servia in which the other European Powers were not concerned. He knew, of course, of the austro-german alliance, as he knew of the franco-russian alliance, but he saw no reason why those alliances should be invoked. Germany and France he considered disinterested Powers and placed them in the same category as Italy, also the ally of Germany and Austria, and England, neither the ally of Russia or France, but who might be compelled to support France and Russia under certain circumstances. If Russia and Austria must fight, Sir Edward Grey held, it was bad enough, but that was better than to see the whole of Europe at war. Germany was not bound to come to the support of Austria unless she was deter mined to force France into the war; France need not go to the assistance of Russia unless she was looking for a casus belli against Germany. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal to the Public Spirit of Great Britain There are seasons, in which no apology can be demanded from the humblest writer, who discourses on the public affairs. His effort becomes dignified by its object. In times of real danger, when the whole zeal of the community is called for by a great and tremendous necessity, he is only discharging a debt, when he brings forward his share of contribution to the common deliberations, and assists in diffusing the sense of a just and provident alarm. In such times, indolence and inaction assume the character and complexion of a treason. The spirit of the British nation is far from being sluggish, or inert.
