Book excerpt: Intersections of asphalt pavement are easily destroyed under heavy traffic in spite of several different technologies employed to combat such damage. Traditional high modulus asphalt mixtures were optimized according to the requirement of intersection maintenance. Penetration grade 40/60 base asphalt, an anti-rutting additive, and hard basalt aggregate were used to design a new high rutting resistance asphalt mixture. The air void content, compaction characteristics, water sensitivity, high temperature performance, and low temperature performance were investigated. Laboratory test results show that the new high rutting resistance asphalt mixture has very good high temperature performance and other beneficial characteristics. From the sensitivity analysis of the material composition, it can be deduced that the performance of the new high rutting resistance asphalt mixture is stable. Field tests also show that the new asphalt mixture is suitable for intersection maintenance of asphalt pavement and can be paved in one layer 9 to 14 cm in thickness.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is currently using a Type 2C dense graded mixture in most of its construction. The NDOT Type 2C mixture showed excellent rutting resistance under normal highway traffic, while its resistance to rutting and shoving at intersections in the hot environment of Las Vegas is questionable. The overall objective of this research was to identify a hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture with good resistance to rutting and shoving at intersections. To this end, two laboratory evaluations were conducted: I. Postmortem evaluation of in-service intersections and II. Laboratory evaluation of different aggregate gradations. Based on past performance and data generated from this research, five different aggregate gradations were selected for laboratory evaluation. Aggregates were sampled from the Sloan quarry located south of Las Vegas, Nevada, along Interstate 15. All five gradations were mixed with a polymer-modified PG76-22NV asphalt binder which is the current specified asphalt grade for southern Nevada. A Hveem mix design was conducted for each of the five mixtures. This part of the research re-evaluated the APA and RSCH as potential candidates for a mix design test for intersection mixtures. In addition, the triaxial compression strength test and the repeated load triaxial test (RLT) were also evaluated. All tests ranked the permanent deformation resistance of the five mixtures in the same order. Additionally, dynamic mechanistic analyses were performed as an attempt to determine the pavement responses under a heavy loaded truck at and away from the intersection. The findings of the mechanistic analyses were used to predict permanent deformation potential in the HMA layer. To this end, permanent deformation models for NDOT Type 2C mixture were developed in the laboratory using the repeated load triaxial (RLT) and the repeated shear at constant height (RSCH) testing. The actual specifications used by NDOT for the various permanent deformation tests were reviewed and adjusted for the HMA mixtures that are going to be used at intersections and stopping areas. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book excerpt: In 2014, researchers at the Virginia Transportation Research Council initiated a study to evaluate the effectiveness of using high polymer-modified (HP) binders in surface asphalt concrete (AC) mixtures. The results were promising enough to support a field study investigating the use of HP binders in asphalt mixtures over jointed concrete pavement. Since 2015, HP AC overlays have been placed at several sections over existing jointed concrete pavement and cracked asphalt pavements in an effort to mitigate reflective cracking. The purpose of this study was to assess the viability of using HP AC mixtures in Virginia as a reflective crack mitigation technique or when deemed appropriate as a tool for increased crack resistance on higher volume facilities. Information on the state of the practice and lessons learned from the use of HP AC mixtures in the United States and Canada are also provided. In general, HP AC mixtures have been used in a wide range of applications under heavy traffic on interstates and slow-braking loads at intersections. No major field-related construction issues in terms of mixing temperatures and in-place compaction of HP AC mixtures were reported and standard construction practices and equipment were used. Good communication between the polymer/binder supplier and the contractor and solid planning prior to the work being conducted were important lessons learned with regard to paving with HP AC mixtures. The performance characteristics of conventional polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) and HP field-produced mixtures were evaluated in the laboratory in terms of durability and resistance to rutting and cracking. Based on the mixtures tested in this study, HP AC mixtures showed better performance when compared with PMA mixtures regardless of the mixture type (dense-graded surface mixtures and stone matrix asphalt [SMA]). Moreover, SMA mixtures showed better performance when compared with surface mixtures regardless of the asphalt binder type (PMA and HP). Overall, SMA-HP mixtures showed the most promising performance among all evaluated PMA and HP mixtures. Distress survey data collected from VDOT’s Pavement Management System of HP field sections were compiled, documented, and compared with that of their control PMA sections. The HP sections showed the most promising performance 5 years after construction (2015-2020) regardless of the traffic level and the pre-existing pavement conditions. In general, none of the evaluated mixtures (HP or PMA) was able to stop reflective cracking totally. Moreover, performance evaluations using the network-level pavement management data were conducted to estimate the life expectancy of HP AC overlays. Overall, PMA and HP AC overlays had an average predicted service life of 6.2 and 8.3 years, respectively, indicating a 34% extension of performance life of the AC overlays with HP modification. The study recommends continued assessment of the as-constructed properties in future HP projects for the purpose of compiling a materials characterization database. Further, the performance of all existing and future HP sections should be monitored. This will help in updating and revising the service life prediction models and the cost-effectiveness of using HP AC mixtures as the existing sections continue to age and more data are available. Finally, the use of the balanced mix design approach should be investigated to promote further the design of more durable and longer-lasting PMA and HP mixtures in Virginia.

Book excerpt: Because of increased traffic loads and truck tire pressures over the last few years, the rutting of asphalt pavements has worsened. Additives such as polymers are being used in an attempt to improve the performance of these pavements. One such product is Novophalt, which is the registered trademark of an asphalt modified with 4 to 6 percent of a polyolefin polymer, primarily polyethylene. A Novophalt surface mixture was used near an intersection on a new construction project to guard against rutting caused by heavy trucks. This study evaluated the construction and performance of sections of pavement with control and Novophalt mixtures at this location. The polymer-modified mixture was manufactured, placed, and compacted with no difficulty. Severe ruts developed in both the control and Novophalt sections under stopped traffic near the traffic light. The rutting was found to be caused by a weak base mixture under the Novophalt surface; the rutting under the control mixture was probably also related to the base mixture. No significant rutting occurred in the control and Novophalt sections in the areas not subjected to severe traffic loads. Although the comparison between the control and Novophalt mixtures was vitiated by the performance of the underlying base mixture, the project demonstrated that construction with the Novophalt mixture could be accomplished satisfactorily.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgical slags are generated as a by-product of smelting during ironmaking, steelmaking, and the production of ferroalloys and non-ferrous metals. The formation conditions result in complex chemical and mineralogical characteristics unique to slags alone. Historically slags have been discarded as a waste product and, through release of potentially toxic trace elements, represent a hazard to the environment and human health. However, increasingly we are realizing the resource potential of what was previously thought of as waste, thus reducing the environmental impact and taking a step closer to a circular economy. This book is a definitive reference on the environmental geochemistry and resource potential of metallurgical slags by summarizing processes for the generation of slags, describing their chemical and mineralogical characteristics, outlining the fundamental geochemistry that propels slag weathering, and illustrating the utilization of slags. Particular attention is given to the value of slags in modern society as they are widely used as construction materials in civil engineering, and as an irreplaceable filter in sequestering excess nutrients, pathogens, metal and/or organic contaminants, and even greenhouse gases. The latest developments on recovering residual valuable metals in slags, including new techniques for extracting by-product elements needed for green and frontier technologies, are revealed. This book is essential reading for environmental geochemists, geologists, metallurgists, mining and civil engineers, waste and resource managers, and all those interested and inspired by a circular economy and minimizing our environmental footprint on planet Earth.
