Book excerpt: Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia is a crucial site for detecting long-term global changes, owing to its high sensitivity to climatic oscillation and its extraordinarily long history. Because lacustrine sediments have an advantage in providing high-resolution information, the sediments in Lake Baikal contain excellent continuous records of past conditions including paleoclimates, evolution, and specification of organisms. Based on the study by the Baikal Drilling Project, this book provides information on global climatic and environmental changes for as much as 12 million years. The book also includes discussions of comparatively short-term changes such as glacial and interglacial transitions that directly link to the present and future environment. Long Continental Records from Lake Baikal summarizes the latest knowledge on the paleoenvironment and provides a foundation for further studies in global environmental changes.

Book excerpt: The Sixth Symposium on Recent and Fossil Diatoms was held in Budapest, 1-5 September 1980, and was arranged by the Hungarian Geological Society. During four days of the meeting 71 papers were presented covering almost the whole gamut of topics with which research on diatoms deals. 32 of these papers are included in this volume which contains those devoted to taxonomy, morphology, ecology and biology. They include a few that are concerned with fossil diatoms, but the papers on stratigraphy and paleoecology are appearing in a special number of Acta Geologica Hungaria.

Book excerpt: Outside Russia very little is known about the terrestrial ecology, vegetation, biogeographical patterns, and biodiversity of the enormously extensive ecosystems of Yakutia, Siberia. These systems are very special in that they function on top of huge layers of permafrost and are exposed to very severe and extreme weather conditions, the range between winter and summer temperatures being more than 100 degrees C. The soils are generally poor, and human use of the vegetation is usually extensive. Main vegetation zones are taiga and tundra, but Yakutia also supports a special land and vegetation form, caused by permafrost, the alas: more or less extensive grasslands around roundish lakes in taiga. All these vegetation types will be described and their ecology and ecophysiological characteristics will be dealt with. Because of the size of Yakutia, covering several climatic zones, and its extreme position on ecological gradients, Yakutia contains very interesting biogeographical patterns, which also will be described. Our analyses are drawn from many years of research in Yakutia and from a vast body of ecological and other literature in Russian publications and in unpublished local reports. The anthropogenic influence on the ecosystems will be dealt with. This includes the main activities of human interference with nature: forestry, extensive reindeer herding, cattle and horse grazing, etc. Also fire and other prominent ecological factors are dealt with. A very important point is also the very high degree of naturalness that is still extant in Yakutia’s main vegetation zones.

While there have been recent compilations of some of the applied aspects of diatoms, and the dizzying pace of taxonomic revisions, this new volume bring us up to date on their classification, biology and ecology, as well as covering the topics of genomics and applied uses. In this collection, some of the leaders in diatom research present either new information or summarize recent research efforts on a wide range of topics, including the tree of life of diatoms, their classifications, the wide habitats and ecological spectra the group exploits, as well as the beauty of their form. This volume celebrates the diversity, emerging areas of research and fascinating ecology of the diatoms bringing this group of world-renown and emerging research leaders together. 'The Diatom World' will foster greater appreciation and research contributions on this incredibly diverse and fascinating group of organisms.

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the decades-long work of studying, analyzing, and reversing the environmental pressures that threatened India’s Chilika Lagoon, the largest brackish-water lagoon in the region, and the second largest in the world. Designated as one of India’s first Ramsar Sites in 1981, Chilika Lagoon continued to degrade for a decade longer. Then, the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) was established to gather information and devise a restoration plan that benefits the ecosystems of the lagoon, with sensitivity to the needs and livelihoods of local communities. Expert contributors detail the work of analysis, planning and implementation, including extensive coverage of such topics as: Devising a plan for implementing Ramsar wise use guidelines Sedimentologic, chemical, and isotopic impacts Hydrodynamics and salinity Runoff and sediment in watersheds of the Lagoon's Western Catchment Long-term analysis of water quality and continued water quality monitoring Bio-optical models for cyclone impact assessment Studies of geomorphology, land use, and sedimentary environments Spatiotemporal assessment of phytoplankton communities Creation of a post-restoration scenario for fish and fisheries Assessing status of waterbirds, species diversity and migration patterns The result was a major hydrological intervention to re-establish hydrological and salinity regimes, biodiversity, and fish catches, and help protect the livelihood of lagoon-dependent communities. The story of the rehabilitation and management of Chilika Lagoon demonstrates that it is possible to halt and reverse the encroachment and degradation of wetlands, to restore biodiversity and to provide benefits for large numbers of people. Ecology, Conservation, and Restoration of Chilika Lagoon goes beyond scientific research articles to explore institutional and governance issues, political ecology, and the Ramsar Convention’s guidelines for ecosystem restoration. The book will benefit researchers, wetland managers, government policy makers and more general readers concerned with restoration and conservation of wetlands around the planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume in The Oxford Regional Environments series. The series volumes are devoted to major regions of the world, each presenting a detailed and up-to-date body of scientific knowledge concerning a particular region. For most topics on the physical geography of Northern Eurasia abundant literature now exists. Most of it, however, is in Russian and other East European languages and this has significantly limited the number of potential readers. This volume seeks to familiarize, at an international level, those with an interest in this area with the most significant achievements in classical and current geographical research. The Physical Geography of Northern Eurasia covers most of the territory of the former USSR. The first section discusses the individual compenents of the physical environment. These chapters cut across regional boundaries and treate the area discussed as a whole. A regional analysis follows mainly in the context of geographical zonation, though a number of specific regions are given individual treatment. The concluding chapters discuss the effects of anthropogenic activities on the physical environment. The approach is an integrative one, tying together various aspects of the physical environments with the environmental implications of human activites. Every component of the environment is treated as a step in the development of the multi-faceted landscapes which in turn provide possibilities and limitations for cultural and economic usage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to provide an identification key to this important freshwater group of algae which enables the user to work from live specimens. The use of fresh material means that time-consuming preparation techniques can be avoided enabling analyses to be made within a short time of collection. Also the diatoms can be counted, identified and studied at the same time as other algae in the sample. The book provides a general introduction to the diatoms including a resume of the variety of chloroplast forms encountered, a review of colony types, a guide to shape terminology and also information on how to measure cells. The keys are designed for the specialist and the non-specialist alike, allowing two points of entry and the identification of most common taxa to species level. When cleaned material is necessary for unequivocal identification, this is indicated. The book also contains a list of all species included with brief ecological notes on occurrences and distribution along with a glossary of terms. This book will be of immense use to biologists studying algal communities in freshwater ecosystems and particularly to those involved in monitoring programmes. The increasing realization of the importance of algae to the health of aquatic ecosystems, and the developing use of diatoms as environmental indicators means that this volume will become an invaluable aid to the water industries and environmental protection agencies.
