Book excerpt: This new edition of the Modern French Grammar is an innovative reference guide to French, combining traditional and function-based grammar in a single volume. Divided into two parts, Part A covers traditional grammatical categories such as word order, nouns, verbs and adjectives and Part B is organized around language functions and notions such as: giving and seeking information describing processes and results expressing likes, dislikes and preferences. With a strong emphasis on contemporary usage, all grammar points and functions are richly illustrated with examples. Implementing feedback from users of the first edition of the Grammar, this second edition includes clearer explanations and greater emphasis on areas of particular difficulty for learners of French. This is the ideal reference grammar for learners of French at all levels, from beginner to advanced. No prior knowledge of grammatical terminology is assumed and a glossary of grammatical terms is provided. This Grammar is complemented by the Modern French Grammar Workbook Second Edition which features related exercises and activities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New French Grammar, Vol. 1: Syntax French grammars for the use of English students are already so numerous that I cannot but apologise for adding my humble contribution to the imposing list. I entertain some hepe, how ever, that there may be found in this new Syntax, the outcome of over thirteen years' experience in teaching French, some grounds to justify its appearance. I have endeavoured to explain several difficulties left un touched, as far as I know, by my predecessors in the same field, and think I may venture to say that there are few important subjects in the following pages concerning which some new rules or observations have not been introduced. Without entering into details, I would call special attention to the treatment of the Moods and Tenses, and of the Adverbs, notably the negative ne, and to the many idioms given in different parts of the book. At the same time, the classification of the various subjects, the numerous headings, the frequent subdivisions in the body of the same paragraph, have all been designed with a 'view to add to the clearness of the work; whilst the way in which the Exceptions have been arranged, in a separate column opposite the Rules, will, it is hoped, prove a useful innovation. A companion volume of Exercises will appear very shortly, to be had separately, or bound together with the Syntax. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 reference grammar, written for advanced students of French, their teachers, and others who want a better understanding of the French language, combines the best of modern and traditional approaches. Its objective is not only practical mastery of the language, but familiarity with its structure. Taking into account modern linguistic research, Advanced French Grammar approaches the French language primarily through the study of syntactic structures, but without excessive emphasis on formalism. It provides a generous number of examples, based on the author's own experience of teaching French to English-speakers, to help the student to understand the different meanings of apparently similar syntactic alternatives. The norms of 'correct expression' are given together with current usage and deviations, and appendixes provide information on the 1990 spelling reforms and on numbers. A substantial index of French and English words and of topics provides easy access to the text itself.
