Gentle Annie who fetched Edmund in the buggy to her father's house has carried me up and down the Judge's stairway, with my head held close against her cheek and with the silvery shadow of her brow against my tangled hair. On the topmost steep of the Hampton burial ground, my kinsmen's names stand fast around the names of their best friends, the Stedmans long years gone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New England Bygones This book is published with no thought of an audience. It tells of real scenes, and of people who were actors in them; but the life it deals with is so very simple that it can hardly satisfy the exacting appetite of the reading public. It is permitted to go into print especially for three children, with hope that their curiosity and affections may be stimulated by it towards those ancestors from whom they have gotten much of the good which is in them, and that from it they may turn with desire and appreciation to sources of what have been to me abundant and enduring riches. Very delightful have been these reminiscences, taking me back to bygone days and much good company; reframing delicious pictures which have kept their color through forty years. The children will read the book, because they will be partial. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New England Peabody Home, for Crippled Children About ten years ago one cold, bleak winter's day, Mrs. Harriet M. Peabody, while on her round of work among the poor who live'in that wretched quarter of the city known as the slums - a vague terri tory bounded by poverty, infirmity, help lessness and hopelessness - had a very pitiful case of suffering brought to her notice. A baby waif had been discovered at or near some lady's doorstep and the tiny scrap of humanity had been badly frozen. Amputa tion was necessary to insure even a chance of life. With that tenacity of existence that is so often found among those least fitted for the life-race, the child (lived mutilated, crippled, forever crippled, - butit lived. What to do with this child was now the problem to be solved. From one charitable institution to another Mrs. Peabody went with the baby's story; but there was none which quite filled the needs of the case ln question. The Home for Incurables in Dorchester, where there were eleven beds for the incurably ill, might, indeed provide for the physical-care of the little cripple, but there was no provision there for the educational training such a child would need. The Children's Hospital in Boston only offered temporary abode dur ing the period of physical disability. He was born on the banks Of one of her beautiful rivers, and was nurtured among her mountains. He boasts his descent direct from one Of those stern Old Puritans who chartered the May ower, and much of his childhood was spent on the very homestead, Where the good man pitched his tent, and cleared his land. Like many Of her sons indeed, he has, in riper years, wandered over sundry parts Of the world, and has seen and known much of its excellence and beauty but he has always returned to the rude and rocky shore Of New Eng land, with new love for her homes and her institutions, -new respect for her hardy sons. He is willing to confess that all his predilections are for New England; that although Aba na and Pharpar, rivers Of Damascus, are better than all her streams, he loves them not as well that he would live upon her barren soil, and die there among his kindred. Book Synopsis New England's General Stores by : Ted Reinstein
Download or read book New England's General Stores written by Ted Reinstein and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the fabric of America over hot coffee and penny candy. Step through the wooden doors of a New England general store and step back in time, into a Norman Rockwell painting and into the heart of America. New England’s General Stores offers a nostalgic picture of this colonial staple and, fortunately, steadfast institution of small towns from Connecticut to Maine. This is where children of each generation take their first allowance to buy their very own penny candy. Locals have swapped stories at these counters from gossip to whispers of revolution. In tough times, the general store treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. Stubborn as New Englanders themselves, the general store has refused to become a mere sentimental relic of an earlier age.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New-England Primer: A Reprint of the Earliest Known Edition, With Many Facsimiles and Reproductions, and an Historical Introduction In the apocryphal poem John Rogers "unto his children," which was included in every New England Primer, he said: "I leave you here a little booke For you to looke upon, That you may see your father's face When I am dead and gon." No better description of the New England Primer itself could be penned. As one glances over what may truly be entitled "The Little Bible of New England," and reads its stern lessons, the Puritan mood is caught with absolute faithfulness. This was the Common. On one side of it was the county court house, and behind that was the dreadful jail; and on the other side of the Common was the Master's school. The Master's school was intended for the biggest boys and girls in town; the Mistress's school, which was in Pleasant Street, took in the smaller scholars. Thus it happened that Lem, living as he did on the Common, was the play mate of boys much older than himself and when he wanted company, which was Often, he had only to go out of his front gate and he would be sure to find boys ready to play with him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New England Squeak and Other Stories: Being the Strange Adventures of Heroic Yet Primitive People Here and there in New England today one may come across old-time cradles that are still suspiciously squeaky. Indeed, the louder the cradles squeaked, the better the parents are said to have liked them. This kind of music, we are told, put the children to sleep.
