Book excerpt: We have studied the dependence of the second harmonic signature of the ion acoustic decay instability on the target material in laser produced plasmas. Well-defined Stokes peaks were observed. The Stokes peaks were especially sharp for high Z targets. The threshold of the IADI was quite low even in high Z plasma. It increased only weakly with increasing the atomic number. On the other hand, the Stokes intensity decreased strongly with increasing atomic number. Linear theory, combined with the results of hydrodynamic-computer-simulation (LASNEX) calculation, explained our experimental results fairly well. The effective laser intensity is strongly reduced by the increased collisionaldamping of electron plasma wave in high Z plasma, so that the Stokes intensity was reduced strongly. Hence, strong electron heating due to the IADI is less likely in high Z plasma. On the other hand, in the context of the threshold, the collisional damping effect of the electron plasma wave is canceled due to the opposite trend of the damping of the ion acoustic wave which decreases with ZT{sub e}/T{sub i}. The low-threshold, and the sharp and steady spectrum make the IADI a good diagnostic of local plasma conditions near the critical surface for high Z plasma. The ionic charge state Z is estimated by measuring the ion acoustic wave frequency of the most unstable wave excited by the IADI. For Mo plasma, we had measured value of Z=30. We can also estimate the plasma density of the instability region using Bohm-Gross dispersion relation of the plasma wave. We have obtained plasma density N{sub e}/N{sub c} = 0.86. We have estimated plasma flow effects on the LADI by measuring the angular distribution of the IADI emission. Our results indicate that the flow effect is not important for the IADI in our experiments.

Book excerpt: The authors made analysis of the IADI experiments previously made using OMEGA laser system. They obtained two important new results: the first direct observation of the epw excited by the Ion Acoustic Decay Instability, and the first study of the IADI in a plasma that approaches laser-fusion conditions, in the sense of having a density scale length of order 1 mm and an electron temperature, T[sub e], in excess of 1 keV. Previous observations of the epw's have been based on the second harmonic emission, from which little can be inferred because the emission is produced by unknown pairs of epw's, integrated in a complicated way over wavenumber space and real space. In contrast, they have directly observed the epw by using the 90[degree], collective Thomson scattering (CTS) of a UV laser (at the third harmonic of the pump) from the epw's. Because the ratio of probe frequency to electron plasma frequency is only about three, the scattering is collective (i.e. k[sub epw][lambda][sub De] is small, where k[sub epw] is the epw wave number and[lambda][sub De] is the Debye length), m even though the scattering angle is large. The electron temperature can then be deduced from the ion sound velocity, obtained from the measurement of the frequency at which growth is maximum at the scattering wavenumber.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma processing of materials is a critical technology to several of the largest manufacturing industries in the worldâ€"electronics, aerospace, automotive, steel, biomedical, and toxic waste management. This book describes the relationship between plasma processes and the many industrial applications, examines in detail plasma processing in the electronics industry, highlights the scientific foundation underlying this technology, and discusses education issues in this multidisciplinary field. The committee recommends a coordinated, focused, and well-funded research program in this area that involves the university, federal laboratory, and industrial sectors of the community. It also points out that because plasma processing is an integral part of the infrastructure of so many American industries, it is important for both the economy and the national security that America maintain a strong leadership role in this technology.

Book excerpt: The dispersion of ion-acoustic fluctuations has been measured using a novel technique that employs multiple color Thomson-scattering diagnostics to measure the frequency spectrum for two separate thermal ion-acoustic fluctuations with significantly different wave vectors. The plasma fluctuations are shown to become dispersive with increasing electron temperature. We demonstrate that this technique allows a time resolved local measurement of electron density and temperature in inertial confinement fusion plasmas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-resolved x-ray pinhole photographs and time-integrated radially-resolved x-ray crystal spectrometer measurements of azimuthally-symmetric aluminum-wire implosions suggest that the final pinch is composed of a hot dense plasma core surrounded by a cooler plasma halo. The slope of the free-bound x-ray continuum measured using filtered photoconducting diodes, provides a time-resolved, model-independent diagnostic of the core electron temperature. A simultaneous measurement of the time-resolved K-shell line spectra provides a diagnostic to indirectly measure the electron temperature of the plasma halo. Together, measurements from the two diagnostics lend support to a picture that also emerges from a 1-D Rad-Hydro model; namely, that of a plasma whose thermalization on axis produces steep radial gradients in temperature, where the temperatures are substantially in excess of a kilovolt in the core and below a kilovolt in the surrounding plasma halo.

Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatially resolved electron temperatures, electron number densities and gas-kinetic temperatures have been determined at five observation heights, nine radial positions, and two settings of RF input power in an aerosol-free argon ICP sustained with a commercial MAK torch. The measurements were obtained by means of simultaneous ruby-laser Thomson scattering the Rayleigh scattering. In the central channel of the ICP the electron temperature ranges from 7000 K to 8500 K, the gas kinetic temperature is about 1000 K from 1.9 to 7.0 x ten to the 15th power/cc. Among the measured parameters, the electron number density is most sensitive to the input RF power and is noticeable and the Saha equation. The overpopulation-electron recombination processes, resulting in a recombining plasma in the analytical zone. This non-LTE feature might be significant for excitation and ionization mechanisms in the ICP. Keywords: Inductively coupled plasma; Combination diagnostics; Thomson scattering; Rayleigh scattering. Book excerpt: The report is concerned with the application of atomic and ionic beams for measurement of electron density and temperature of fusion plasma. The average electron density is determined from the attenuation of an atomic beam. Spectroscopic line ratio measurements along the beam provide information about the electron temperature distribution. Single shot measurements can be made and the data handling automated with an Optical Multichannel Analyzer. The electron density distribution can best be measured with an ion beam. The plasma potential can be determined exactly from the energy difference between secondary and primary ions. Four appendices include completed research on photo- and electron-impact ionization as well as properties of GaAs lasers. (Author).
