Book excerpt: When the early colonists came to America, they were braving a new world, with new wonders and difficulties. Family historians beginning the search for their ancestors from this period run into a similar adventure, as research in the colonial period presents a number of exciting challenges that genealogists may not have experienced before. This book is the key to facing those challenges. This new book, Researching Your Colonial New England Ancestors, leads genealogists to a time when their forebears were under the rule of the English crown, blazing their way in that uncharted territory. Patricia Law Hatcher, FASG, provides a rich image of the world in which those ancestors lived and details the records they left behind. With this book in hand, family historians will be ready to embark on a journey of their own, into the unexplored lines of their colonial past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book breaks new ground by offering the first detailed and systematic analysis of inheritance practices in New York City from the beginning of Dutch settlement in the 1620s to the onset of the American Revolution. By analyzing a broad range of original sources--including more than 2,300 wills--David E. Narrett shows how the transmission of property at death reflected the distribution of power and authority within the family. The author makes an especially important contribution to early New York history by explaining the Dutch origins of social and family customs, and by tracing the persistence of Dutch ways following the English conquest of New Netherland in 1664. He demonstrates that seventeenth-century Dutch law was particularly favorable to women since it sanctioned community property within marriage, the drafting of mutual wills by spouses, and the equal (or nearly equal) division of property among all children. While the book maintains its comparative focus on the Dutch and English traditions, it also includes material on other ethnic groups (for example, French Huguenots and Jews) living in a pluralistic society. Narrett utilizes both Dutch and English language sources to examine such pertinent topics as the relationship between law and social custom, primogeniture, kinship and communal ties, charitable bequests, the manumission of slaves, and the literacy level of testators.Written in a clear and precise manner, the book includes many tables that will give readers immediate access to supporting data, and a conclusion establishes the relationship of Narrett's findings to relevant scholarship. A valuable addition to the literature on inheritance, this is a book whose conclusions and data will be mined by colonialists, legal historians, and historians of women and the family.

Book excerpt: More than thirteen years in preparation, Mackenzie's "Colonial Families" treats only those families who trace their ancestry back to the period 1607-1776. Ranging from three or four pages to ten or twenty pages or more, each family history article furnishes the British or European pedigree of the colonial ancestor, followed by a listing of his descendants--generation by generation--up to the time of writing, giving names, birth dates, dates of marriage and death, places of residence, occupation, and a variety of other matter. Also included in the articles are illustrations of coats of arms associated with the families. The seven volumes combined cover no fewer than 850 families and name 125,000 family members!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In villages scattered across the northern reaches of Spain’s New World empire, remote from each other and from the centers of power, family mattered. In this book Suzanne M. Stamatov skillfully relies on both ecclesiastical and civil records to discover how families formed and endured during this period of contention in the eighteenth century. Family was both the source of comfort and support and of competition, conflict, and even harm. Cases, including those of seduction, broken marriage promises, domestic violence, and inheritance, reveal the variabilities families faced and how they coped. Stamatov further places family in its larger contexts of church, secular governance, and community and reveals how these exchanges—mundane and dramatic—wove families into the enduring networks that created an intimate colonial New Mexico.

This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past is filled with captivating accounts of brave immigrants; those who worked the land, and landed gentry descended from royalty. Their stories are quietly heroic, with a few scoundrels for good measure. Some came seeking religious and civil freedom, others pursued the chance to improve their economic circumstances. Abbey-Ashman: Two Colonial and Pioneering Families of North America is both the author's genealogy and family history. Beginning in 1475 England, Volume 1 of this genealogical journey engages readers in the social-political structures which drove the family to brave life in the new world. English settlers and Native Americans in the New England territories first attempted a mutual relationship based on trade, but soon disease, and the rapid growth of the English colonies led to conflict and eventually, war. The history of these first four generations up to the American Revolution is both complicated and fascinating and must be remembered. Allied families include: Cooper/Couper, Harberd; Fairfield, Knight, Skepper/Skipper, Fisher; Pease, Goodale/Goodell, Adams, Newton, Vassall, King(e), Lorran; Terry, Lobdell, Helme, Eldred, Rouse, Morgan, Gilbert. If you are a serious, or hobby genealogist, and researching any of these lines, this volume could provide lineage data, vital statistics and stories of these ancestors. Extensive references are given, countless books were consulted in libraries from New Mexico to New England. Numerous web-sites have been searched, and sources confirmed (or noted otherwise), primarily AmericanAncestors.org, and Ancestry.com. The author writes, "I walked through rain-soaked cemeteries and historic homes that are centuries old and lovingly preserved for posterity. I loved every minute of it." Various museums, and historical societies were also visited, and photos taken which are found within these pages. Sections titled: History and Inventions and The Lives and Role of Women are included for each generation, as well as stories from the author's travels and research. Images, charts and photographs enhance each section. These features serve, as one "beta" reader commented, "to turn dry lists of 'begats' into compelling stories of real people who lived real lives, leaving England behind and forging a new home in a new land.
