How about beef Wellington on barbed wire, a cooked breakfast on a shovel or sausages in a dog bowl? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A completely revised edition, offering new design recipes for interactive programs and support for images as plain values, testing, event-driven programming, and even distributed programming. This introduction to programming places computer science at the core of a liberal arts education. Unlike other introductory books, it focuses on the program design process, presenting program design guidelines that show the reader how to analyze a problem statement, how to formulate concise goals, how to make up examples, how to develop an outline of the solution, how to finish the program, and how to test it. Because learning to design programs is about the study of principles and the acquisition of transferable skills, the text does not use an off-the-shelf industrial language but presents a tailor-made teaching language. For the same reason, it offers DrRacket, a programming environment for novices that supports playful, feedback-oriented learning. The environment grows with readers as they master the material in the book until it supports a full-fledged language for the whole spectrum of programming tasks. This second edition has been completely revised. While the book continues to teach a systematic approach to program design, the second edition introduces different design recipes for interactive programs with graphical interfaces and batch programs. It also enriches its design recipes for functions with numerous new hints. Finally, the teaching languages and their IDE now come with support for images as plain values, testing, event-driven programming, and even distributed programming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph addresses two quite different topics, each being able to shed light on the other. Firstly, it lays the foundation for a particular view of the bootstrap. Secondly, it gives an account of Edgeworth expansion. The first two chapters deal with the bootstrap and Edgeworth expansion respectively, while chapters 3 and 4 bring these two themes together, using Edgeworth expansion to explore and develop the properties of the bootstrap. The book is aimed at graduate level for those with some exposure to the methods of theoretical statistics. However, technical details are delayed until the last chapter such that mathematically able readers without knowledge of the rigorous theory of probability will have no trouble understanding most of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Ghostwritten (1999), David Mitchell has rapidly established himself as one of the most inventive and important British novelists of the 21st century. In this landmark study, Rose Harris-Birtill reveals the extent to which Mitchell has created an interconnected fictional world across the full run of his writing. Covering Mitchell's complete fictions, from bestselling novels such as Cloud Atlas (2004), The Bone Clocks (2014) and number9dream (2001), to his short stories and his libretti for the operas Sunken Garden and Wake, this book examines how Buddhist influences inform the ethical worldview that permeates his writing. Using a comparative theoretical model drawn from the Tibetan mandala to map Mitchell's fictional world, Harris-Birtill positions Mitchell as central to a new generation of post-secular writers who re-examine the vital role of belief in galvanizing action amidst contemporary ecological, political and humanitarian crises. David Mitchell's Post-Secular World features two substantial new interviews with the author, a chronology of his fictions and a selected bibliography of important critical writings on his work.

Her poems are haunted by demons, ghosts, and even the living who wander exotic landscapes that appear at once threatening and seductive. In these poems, her sly speaker renames a pink hibiscus on display at Lowe's, "Lucifer's Panties"; another character chants, "I'd fall devil / over heels over edge over oleander"; and one woman writes a letter to the underworld: Dear black bayou, once, by a river I bit a man's neck. His scent: the raw teak air husked inside stomachs of six Russian nesting dolls--the ones in the attic I pulled apart and open. The ones I pulled apart and open like Styrofoam cups.

Book excerpt: Having emerged as one the leading contemporary British writers, David Mitchell is rapidly taking his place amongst British novelists with the gravitas of an Ishiguro or a McEwan. Written for a wide constituency of readers of contemporary literature, A Temporary Future: The Fiction of David Mitchell explores Mitchell's main concerns-including those of identity, history, language, imperialism, childhood, the environment, and ethnicity-across the six novels published so far, as well as his protean ability to write in multiple and diverse genres. It places Mitchell in the tradition of Murakami, Sebald, and Rushdie-writers whose works explore narrative in an age of globalization and cosmopolitanism. Patrick O'Donnell traces the through-lines of Mitchell's work from ghostwritten to The Bone Clocks and, with a chapter on each of the six novels, charts the evolution of Mitchell's fictional project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TAS - please do not use this blurb in its raw form ????? Arriving in Europe in the 14th Century, the Qipch?q Tatars are the longest surviving Muslim people in Europe. They form the historical core of the Muslim community in the Baltic States, Belarus and Poland where the Muslim communities in these countries are small compared with those in other parts of the European Union and in Russia. Here Harry Norris investigates the earliest contacts between the Baltic peoples and the World of Islam in the Middle East. He surveys their history, their Islamic beliefs, their culture, their literature and their life in New Europe today. He draws contrasts and similarities between other Muslim communities in Europe, including the diverse Muslim groups in the Nordic countries that border the Baltic Sea; Finland, Sweden and Denmark. This book is of vital interest to those studying the rich cultural heritage of minority groups of European Muslims and their position in Europe today. It examines the trade routes of the Vikings and the early Slavs and Balts who had commercial relations with Arab merchants and where the currency of the Caliphate is evidence for the trade in amber, furs and Middle Eastern silks and other luxury goods. The Tatars and the Jewish Qipch?qs arrived in these countries during the 14th century. They were brought here by the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Duke Vytautas (Witold)(1396-1430). During the Jagellon dynasty and centuries later the settlement of these Muslim Tatars was to continue. They became farmers and soldiers and they rose to a high status in the royal estates of Poland. Despite this assimilation, they resolutely retained their Muslim identity. For centuries these Tatar communities, in size, were second only to the large Jewish communities in this part of Europe. But from the 19th century, amidst wars, partition and genocide their numbers declined. During the age of the Soviet Union other Muslim communities have come to settle in these lands and they now threaten to outnumber the Tatars who have lived there for centuries. This book describes the Tatars and these other Muslims. It surveys their history, their Islamic beliefs, their culture, their literature and their life in New Europe today. There are, of course, other Muslim communities, larger in number and more diverse, in Nordic countries that border the Baltic Sea; Finland, Sweden and Denmark. These are also discussed in the contents of this book revealing contrasts and similarities and past contacts between the Tatars and the Muslims of Scandinavia. This is the first book in English on this subject where sources of information elsewhere are in Polish. Russian, Byelorussian, and Lithuanian. Its author has travelled extensively in the region supported by grants and exchange agreements of the British Academy. This book contains a Glossary and an extensive Bibliography. Its content will be of interest to those whose studies are in the fields of Eastern European culture and history, Religious Studies, Islam in Europe, and the kindred Muslim communities that are to be found in Russia and in Central Asia, today.
