Book Synopsis A Naturalist in the Guianas (Classic Reprint) by : Eugène André
Download or read book A Naturalist in the Guianas (Classic Reprint) written by Eugène André and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Naturalist in the Guianas I have been asked by Mr. André to write a brief preface to the following account of his journeys up the Caura affluent of the Orinoco, and feel that I cannot well refuse to do so, especially as the author declares that I am in a measure personally responsible for the appearance of the narrative in its present form. But if the reader will turn to the narrative itself, he will quickly discover that no preface is needed to proclaim its merits. In the Geo graphical Journal for September 1902, a paper by Mr. André summarised the results of his latest journey and described his ascent of Mount Turagua. But Mr. André is still more a naturalist than a geographer, and in particular he has made valuable additions to our know ledge oi the bird life of the great Venezuelan forests, as Dr. Hartert of the Tring Museum has abundantly testified. Book Synopsis Rediscovering the British World by : Phillip Alfred Buckner
Download or read book Rediscovering the British World written by Phillip Alfred Buckner and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rediscovering the British World is one part of an ongoing attempt to approach British Imperial history from a different viewpoint, placing the colonies of settlement at the centre. Editors Phillip Buckner and Douglas Francis have included nineteen essays from expert scholars in the field, which cover a broad range of cultural, social, and intellectual topics in British imperial history from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The essays focus on the history of Britain and the Empire, with considerable emphasis on the self-governing dominions of Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. They attempt to show the centrality of the Empire in the history of the nations created by the British diaspora overseas, while at the same time calling into question the extent of the existence of a "British World." The goal is not to wax nostalgic, but rather to re-examine the complex phenomenon of this far-reaching empire and to shed light on the ways in which it has shaped our world. Download or read book White Hunters written by Brian Herne and published by Holt Paperbacks. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Herne's White Hunters: The Golden Age of African Safaris is the story of seventy years of African adventure, danger, and romance. East Africa affects our imagination like few other places: the sight of a charging rhino goes directly to the heart; the limitless landscape of bony highlands, desert, and mountain is, as Isak Dinesen wrote, of "unequalled nobility." White Hunters re-creates the legendary big-game safaris led by Selous and Bell and the daring ventures of early hunters into unexplored territories, and brings to life such romantic figures as Cape-to-Cairo Grogan, who walked 4,000 miles for the love of a woman, and Dinesen's dashing lover, Denys Finch. Witnesses to the richest wildlife spectacle on the earth, these hunters were the first conservationists. Hard-drinking, infatuated with risk, and careless in love, they inspired Hemingway's stories and movies with Clark Gable and Gregory Peck.
Book Synopsis Imperialism and juvenile literature by : Jeffrey Richards
Download or read book Imperialism and juvenile literature written by Jeffrey Richards and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular culture is invariably a vehicle for the dominant ideas of its age. Never was this truer than in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when it reflected the nationalist and imperialist ideologies current throughout Europe. It both reflects popular attitudes, ideas and preconceptions and it generates support for selected views and opinions. This book examines the various media through which nationalist ideas were conveyed in late-Victorian and Edwardian times: in the theatre, "ethnic" shows, juvenile literature, education and the iconography of popular art. It seeks to examine in detail the articulation and diffusion of imperialism in the field of juvenile literature by stressing its pervasiveness across boundaries of class, nation and gender. It analyses the production, distribution and marketing of imperially-charged juvenile fiction, stressing the significance of the Victorians' discovery of adolescence, technological advance and educational reforms as the context of the great expansion of such literature. An overview of the phenomenon of Robinson Crusoe follows, tracing the process of its transformation into a classic text of imperialism and imperial masculinity for boys. The imperial commitment took to the air in the form of the heroic airmen of inter-war fiction. The book highlights that athleticism, imperialism and militarism become enmeshed at the public schools. It also explores the promotion of imperialism and imperialist role models in fiction for girls, particularly Girl Guide stories.
