Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on the education systems in the three Americas, North, Central and South America, and includes a chapter on most countries in the region. The chapters follow a common structure and include information on the development, organization, and current trends in mainstream education from pre-primary to tertiary level for each country. Chapter contributions are organized along three parts: Each chapter starts with a description of the historical and social foundations of the education system from their founding period up to today, including discussions of political, economic and cultural contexts and conditions. This first part closes with a description of how transitions from education to the labor market are organized. The second part consists of an overview of the institutional and organizational principles as well as of the structure of education from pre-primary to tertiary level. It includes a focus on legislative bases and financial provisions for the education system and a description of the structure by using the ISCED-classification. It further includes information of the supply of human resources such as teachers and other educators. The third and final part of the chapters discusses selected educational trends and aspects of particular interest: dealing with inequality, ICT and digitization activities, and STEM-related policies and programs. The Handbook delivers a fundamental description of the educational systems, including information about how they were shaped, how they are organized and respectively cared for by national stakeholders. It provides both to students and scholars who seek concise and systematic knowledge about education in a particular country. Also, comparative researchers will find a basis for better understanding of various educational questions about the foundations and development of the national education systems.

Download or read book A National System of Education written by John Howard Whitehouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A National System of Education The vital weakness of our educational system is the lack of any proper relation between primary and later forms of education. Elementary education has been regarded as a complete system in itself, capable of turning out its children at ages between 12 and 14 to enter upon the work of life. The code of the Board of Education has attempted a task at once impossible and grotesque, that of laying down a curriculum which would enable the children of the elementary schools to receive their educational equipment for life before reaching an age at which the children of wealthier parents are still in the nursery or the preparatory school. The divorce between our different classes of schools has had far-reaching results. What we have lost can perhaps best be appreciated by a reference to other countries where the whole educational system is a unity, as in parts of the German Empire, or parts of the United States of America. Book Synopsis Resisting Education: A Cross-National Study on Systems and School Effects by : Jannick Demanet
Download or read book Resisting Education: A Cross-National Study on Systems and School Effects written by Jannick Demanet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how school-level features affect student resistance to education from a comparative angle, taking into account cross-national differences. All over the world, policy makers, school administrators, teachers, and parents are dealing with students who resist education. Resisting school might ultimately lead to unqualified dropout, and it is therefore crucial to understand what triggers resistance in students. The book uses the ISCY data set to study multilevel questions in detail. It does so based on the view that system effects and school effects intertwine: system-level policy measures affect student outcomes in part by shaping school-level features, and school effects may differ according to certain system-level features. We start from an overarching theoretical framework that ties the various city-specific insights together, and contains empirical studies from Barcelona, Bergen, Ghent, Montréal Reykjavik, Sacramento, and Turku. It shows that, in all countries, the act of resisting school is more likely to occur among the socio-economically disadvantaged, and those in the most disadvantaged schools. However, educational system features, including tracking, free school choice, and school autonomy, are important driving factors of the differences between schools. As such, systems have the tools to curb between-school differences in resistance. Previous research turns resistance into a problem of individual students. However, if school or system features engender resistance to school, policy initiatives directed at individual students may solve the problem only partially.
