Book excerpt: The national radio host and bestselling author of The American Miracle reveals the happy accidents, bizarre coincidences, and flat-out miracles that continue to shape America’s destiny. “A hopeful message for our troubled times . . . Michael Medved has an eye for a story, and a preternatural gift for telling it in beguiling ways.”—Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award–winning author of Founding Brothers Has God withdrawn his special blessing from the United States? Americans ponder that painful question in troubled times, as we did during the devastation of the Civil War and after the assassinations of the ’60s, and as we do in our present polarization. Yet somehow—on battlefields, across western wilderness, and in raucous convention halls—astounding events have reliably advanced America, restoring faith in the Republic’s providential protection. In this provocative historical narrative, Michael Medved brings to life ten haunting tales that reveal this purposeful pattern, including: • A near-fatal carriage accident forces Lincoln’s secretary of state into a canvas-and-steel neck brace that protects him from a would-be assassin’s knife thrusts, allowing him two years later to acquire Alaska for the United States. • A sudden tidal wave of Russian Jewish immigration, beginning in 1881, coincides with America’s rise to world leadership, fulfilling a biblical promise that those blessing Abraham’s children will themselves be blessed. • Campaigning for president, Theodore Roosevelt takes a bullet in the chest, but a folded speech in his jacket pocket slows its progress and saves his life. • At the Battle of Midway, U.S. planes get lost over empty ocean and then miraculously reconnect for five minutes of dive-bombing that wrecks Japan’s fleet, convincing even enemy commanders that higher powers intervened against them. • A behind-the-scenes “conspiracy of the pure of heart” by Democratic leaders forces a gravely ill FDR to replace his sitting vice president—an unstable Stalinist—with future White House great Harry Truman. These and other little-known stories build on themes of The American Miracle, Medved’s bestseller about America’s remarkable rise. The confident heroes and stubborn misfits in these pages shared a common faith in a master plan, which continues to unfold in our time. God’s Hand on America confirms that the founders were right about America’s destiny to lead and enlighten the world.

Book excerpt: This year, get to know the true Jonathan Edwards—and see the hand of God in your own life like never before. Jonathan Edwards is one of the most respected early American theologians. In Always in God’s Hands, Owen Strachan recovers the real Jonathan Edwards—the thinker, the compassionate father, the courageous reformer—as opposed to the caricature of him that is often presented. Edwards believed God was ever-present in each of our lives, caring and encouraging us in every moment. In a moving letter to his daughter, he reminds her of that comforting truth by describing her as “always in God’s hands.” Through daily quotes from Edwards’s letters and sermons, this inspirational devotional reveals the soaring theology and comforting spirituality of one of history’s most faithful and gifted pastors. With each meditation, compiler Owen Strachan offers refreshing and relevant insights, encouraging you in your walk with God.

Book excerpt: The book explores the danger posed by Christian fundamentalism - a doctrine that is sweeping America. Leaders of the doctrine proclaim that God wants - even demands - that Planet Earth be destroyed in our generation. Adherents to this doctrine are said to constitute the fastest growing movement in Christianity today. Fundamentalist Evangelicals believe there will be catastrophic events on earth, some occurring already, including the turmoil in the Middle East, culminating in the Battle of Armageddon in which Christ will triumph and begin ruling the earth. At this point, they believe, non-believers will be destroyed, good Christians saved and any remaining Jews converted to Christianity. By praying for their Rapture and the End of Time, might they Force the Hand of God -- to bring it about? The book also includes CBS 60 Minutes program, Zion's Christian Soldiers and an interview with Jerry Falwell. Grace Halsell (1923-2000) served President Lyndon Johnson as his speech writer for three years. She covered both Korea and Vietnam as a journalist and wrote for newspapers in the U.S., South America, Europe, Russia, China, Japan and the Middle East. She wrote fourteen books among them the well-received Soul Sister, Prophecy and Politics: Militant Evangelists on the Road to Nuclear War, Journey to Jerusalem and The Illegals. It clearly and powerfully explains what the parallels are between Germany's fall from grace and the beginning of our own fall. - Eric Metaxas, author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy In When A Nation Forgets God, Erwin Lutzer studies seven similarities between Nazi Germany and America today—some of them chilling—and cautions us to respond accordingly. Engaging, well-researched, and easy to understand, Lutzer’s writing is that of a realist, one alarmed but unafraid. Amidst describing the messes of our nation’s government, economy, legal pitfalls, propaganda, and more, Lutzer points to the God who always has a plan. At the beginning of the twentieth Century, Nazi Germany didn’t look like a country on the brink of world-shaking terrors. It looked like America today. When a Nation Forgets God uses history to warn us of a future that none of us wants to see. It urges us to be ordinary heroes who speak up and take action.

Book excerpt: The provocative and authoritative history of the origins of Christian America in the New Deal era We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has been a Christian nation. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse reveals that the belief that America is fundamentally and formally Christian originated in the 1930s. To fight the "slavery" of FDR's New Deal, businessmen enlisted religious activists in a campaign for "freedom under God" that culminated in the election of their ally Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. The new president revolutionized the role of religion in American politics. He inaugurated new traditions like the National Prayer Breakfast, as Congress added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and made "In God We Trust" the country's first official motto. Church membership soon soared to an all-time high of 69 percent. Americans across the religious and political spectrum agreed that their country was "one nation under God." Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how an unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.

Book excerpt: How can YOU help bring hope to our nation? At a time when it seems that our nation is toppling over—morally, culturally, economically, and politically—you may be asking this question: Is there any hope for America? Dr. Tony Evans says YES. In America: Turning a Nation to God, Dr. Evans helps Christians understand that at the core, America's problems are spiritual. And, God and His rule are America's only hope. As His people, God is calling us to return to Him in humility and repentance, to submit to His rule and authority. Only as we commit to doing so, individually and collectively, will we realize that hope. We hold within the collective body of Christ not only the power but also the capacity to put our country back on the path of ascendancy. This straight-forward teaching, when embraced by believers in our nation, will usher in the greatest revival in American history.

The movement of that change writes the history of our lives and our nation. Some changes are loud and offensive, while others are silent and subtle. We quickly adjust to the loud and offensive movements so as to keep everything on track, but it is the silent and subtle movements that we miss. When those slow-moving cultural movements start effecting the foundation of our survival as a society, they must be exposed, and the people must ask themselves what kind of nation they want. Our enemies know what it takes to remove the foundations of our nation, foundations which keep us as a nation under God free. The history of ancient Israel and her relationship to God, as seen in Scripture, gives to us a lesson in what not to do if we want to remain a nation under God. How did their youth treat their elders, and how did their false prophets turn the people away from God? How did God become irrelevant to a people so blessed by Him? Was God redefined by society in both the religious and the secular, and was His standard of morality redefined as well? These are questions asked and hopefully answered in this writing.

Book excerpt: This book contains three books in one; all on the same subject, which is God's guiding hand in the founding and progress of the United States of America. Book One THE HAND OF GOD IN AMERICAN HISTORY A Study of Divine Providence as Seen in the Life and Mission of a Nation By Wilbur Fisk Tillett, D.D., LL.D., 1923 Chapter 1: God's Use of Nations Chapter 2: Christopher Columbus, The Christ-Bearer Chapter 3: The Faith of Our Fathers Chapter 4: The Religious Faith and Moral Character of Our Presidents Chapter 5: Our Ethical Idealism and Altruism Chapter 6: What Makes a Nation Great? ------------------------- Book Two THE HAND OF GOD IN AMERICAN HISTORY By: John F. Bigelow 1861 If we look into the History of Nations, we shall find that not a few of them supposed themselves to be the special favorites of Divine Providence. If we inquire also into the state of national feeling, as it now exists in different countries, we shall find, in numbers of them, no lack of present evidences of the same assumption. . . . Does the story of other nations tell of remarkable events, of hairbreadth escapes, of wonderful deliverances, of daring exploits and grand achievements? The annals of the Israelites relate those, the equal of which veritable history nowhere else records, and which the most romantic legend has hardly surpassed. In the case of the American people, as in that of the Jews, we believe that it is no dictate of national vanity, when we claim that God has given us a history unique and peculiar: when we claim that "He hath not so dealt with any nation." Accordingly the subject, on which I propose to address you at this time is, the Hand of God in American History. I. In the first place, let me point you to some of the manifestations and developments of peculiar Providential agency in our historical career. ------------------------- GOD'S HAND IN AMERICA By the Rev. George B. Cheever 1841 1. That God is governor among the nations. 2. That he deals with nations on the same principles as with Individuals. 3. That the responsibilities and duties of nations as individuals, are commensurate with their capabilities, opportunities, and mercies. 4. That the disregard and violation of this principle will be followed with the divine retribution, and if persisted in, must result in national degradation and ruin. 5. That in the light of these principles an enumeration of the elements of national gratitude, is an exceedingly solemn and admonitory service. These propositions may occupy two or three of the following chapters, and afterwards the main subject to which they are introductory will be discussed, viz: The opportunities and responsibilities of this country for its own and the world's evangelization. Here opens that most striking aspect of providence and duty, to which I have referred in the general title of this volume; a title which may be pardoned for its apparent singularity and quaintness, in consideration of its condensed expression of a most comprehensive and important theme.
