Aware of this ranking, the federal government has put pressure on state officials to increase state completion rates. Tying state funding to performance metrics, state governors are requiring that higher education institutions determine a way to increase their graduation rates. With the increased attention on completion, community colleges, currently graduating an average of 20 percent of their students, are focusing on assisting students to get through academic programs successfully. The most intriguing population, first-generation college students, has been the target of much literature in relation to success. The majority of literature surrounding first-generation college students has focused on the inability of this type of student to succeed on our college campuses. Relying on the results of quantitative studies, researchers have often examined this population of students from a deficit approach. Grouping the students into one category, assumptions are made regarding their ability to succeed, purporting that these students are less likely to earn strong GPAs and persist at our colleges because they are the first in their families to attend college. While researchers continue to grapple with this question, the number of these students continues to grow on our campuses, specifically community college campuses. Due to increased numbers of first-generation students attending community colleges, researchers have directed more attention toward this population of students and more information is needed. The purpose of this research was to explore first-generation community college students' ability to succeed in an unfamiliar environment - college. Acknowledging the fact that they are able to succeed, I questioned the deficit theory approach previously embraced by researchers regarding this population. Utilizing narrative inquiry methodology, data was collected through in-depth interviews with a diverse sample of six students at a large community college in the Midwest. Using a three-dimensional framework, participants were asked to explore their pasts, presents, and futures in regard to their ability to succeed. The content of the narratives was analyzed using Fraser's (2004) line-by-line approach. A constructivist framework guided the interpretation of the results. The results of this study indicate that the tendency to understand first-generation community college students from a deficit approach should not be encouraged. Contrary to what the social constructions have indicated, these students are capable of the same academic endeavors as their continuing-generation peers. Regardless of early environments, they are able to succeed at our community colleges. Once we truly understand where they have been, who they have become, and where they wish to go, we can build on their strengths to ensure that they will succeed at our institutions.

Book excerpt: This study set out to investigate how working-class first generation white students manage their academic and social transition into a 2-year community college and how these students learn to orient themselves to opportunities and overcome barriers in their new unfamiliar environment. Guided by a social capital framework, this qualitative study examined the role of protective agents, during the transition from high school into college of 20 first generation working class white students in a community college. Results in this study confirmed some prior research conducted on first generation ethnic minority students and also presented new perspectives regarding social capital and first generation, working-class white students. This study shows that first generation, working-class, white students arrive on campus confused and feel like there is an absence of institutional support to aid them with the transition. Further, the role that parents were able to fulfill during the transition to college was limited. Students in the current study reported that they struggled financially and balancing their time with work and school. The findings of this study also suggest that students believed that personal characteristics such as self-regulation and motivation rather than social capital would be the most important factor in attaining their educational goals. These findings raise questions about the college information sources available to first generation working class white community college and provide useful information for institutions working to enhance the success of both working-class and first-generation college students regardless of race and ethnicity.

Book excerpt: First-generation college students (FGCSs) face a myriad of issues when entering higher education. As FGCSs continue to enroll in community colleges at high rates, it is important to discuss their pathways to success in higher education. This qualitative study explored the experiences of FGCSs who attended a community college in Central Texas to learn more about their experiences with being identified as FGCS; what prevents them, if anything, to identify support systems that are conducive to their overall retention and success; and if social capital had relevance to their academic success. Through narrative inquiry, a storytelling approach was utilized to portray the participants' personal stories of success and what they have overcome. This study also provided a rich understanding of their struggles as FGCSs within the college. After several cycles of coding and data analysis, four major themes emerged from this study: (a) pride and success; (b) sense of belonging and identification as an FGCS; (c) support systems, barriers, and challenges; and (d) social capital and family influence. The data revealed a need for community colleges to identify FGCSs better, establish mentoring programs, and promote success stories of these students so that future FGCSs are better supported.

In addition to facing many of the same issues as their peers, they must also overcome unique challenges that might prevent them from thriving in college. According to Laurie Schreiner (2010), a thriving college student is someone who is fully engaged intellectually, socially, emotionally in the whole college experience. This mixed methods explanatory sequential study sought to understand the experiences of thriving first-generation community college students and answer the research question, what do first-generation community college students report on what makes them thrive? Quantitative data were collected via the Thriving Quotient survey (N = 242), which served to identify thriving students. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews of 10 thriving students. Data analysis revealed that a very high level of academic determination, strong sense of belonging to their community, and an expectation of positive outcomes were shown to be present in these thriving students, despite facing additional obstacles as first-generation students, and attempting to learn virtually during a pandemic. Positive relationships with faculty and a strong familial support system were frequently cited as major factors for their success, while lack of guidance and direction at the college level was their greatest and most frustrating challenge, especially surrounding the process of applying for financial aid. The implications of the findings are presented along with recommendations for practice, decision-making, and future research.

Additionally, a comparison between the literature review and the research findings indicated that the most often touted mechanisms of retention are not required by most colleges and therefore, are not often used by LIFG community college students. Furthermore, the one resource all the participants cited as being helpful in their retention was the use of faculty, and yet, this was not a mechanism that was overly cited in the literature review.

Prior studies show that first-generation college students are low-income, they tend to graduate in six-years, and likely to leave college after their first year. Researchers have found that high-impact practices is one way to help remedy the various challenges that first-year, first-generation students' encounter. A learning community as an example of a high-impact activity makes a positive difference for students which helps first-generation students build their identities as learners. This study examined the experiences of first-generation students about how they perceive their FLC. A basic interpretive qualitative research study was conducted which incorporated personal stories from 13 first-year, first-generation college students. To help frame this study, Sense of Belonging was used as a conceptual framework. My approach to themeing the data was generating theoretical constructs. The four themes are: (a) Writing Intensively is Reflective and Impactful; (b) Academic Support is Beneficial, Utilizing Resources, and Engaging; (c) Making Connections is Relational and Transitioning; (d) Participating is Motivation, Awareness, and Structure. Findings from this study show that students' perceptions regarding their experiences in a freshman learning community were positive. Participants mentioned how they benefited from the learning community, created a sense of community and belonging, and successfully transitioned into college. This study has important implications for expanding knowledge and informing institutional practices aimed to enhance the experiences of first-generation students enrolled in FLCs.
