Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative of the Expedition to Holland: In the Autumn of the Year 1799; Illustrated With a Map of North Holland, and Seven Views of the Principal Places Occupied by the British Forces The late Expedition to Holland naturally excited a very lively interest in the public mind during its progress, and no small share of inquisitive curiosity respecting its final issue. The author of the following Narrative, however, cannot promise that he has been enabled completely to gratify this curiosity; - in truth, he has no pretensions whatsoever to boast of extraordinary information, derived from high authorities, or from any particular authenticated documents, other than those which have been already published, and which will be found collected in the Appendix. This work, indeed, is nothing more than a journal, a little altered, so as to admit an account of various transactions and incidents connected with the subject, but which could not possibly altogether fall under the daily observance of any single person. From this candid avowal, it will not be expected that the publication can be totally free from errors and mis-statements. For any such, the author must deem himself responsible; but he expects and hopes they will be found neither numerous nor important. The various situations in which the author was placed, while in Holland, presented him with many obvious and favourable occasions for remark, of which he was not unmindful to avail himself. He was among the foremost of those who landed in the country, and among the last who left it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This biography of the second Earl of Chatham looks beyond his famous military failure to reveal one of the early nineteenth century’s most fascinating figures. John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham, is one of the most enigmatic and overlooked figures of early nineteenth century British history. The elder brother of Pitt the Younger, he has long been consigned to history as the late Lord Chatham, the lazy commander-in-chief of the 1809 Walcheren expedition, whose inactivity and incompetence turned what should have been an easy victory into a disaster. In The Late Lord, Jacqueline Reiter presents a more nuanced and revealing portrait. During a twenty-year career at the heart of government, Pitt served in several important cabinet posts such as First Lord of the Admiralty and Master-General of the Ordnance. Yet despite his closeness to the Prime Minister and friendship with the Royal Family, political rivalries and private tragedy hampered his ascendance. Paradoxically for a man of widely admired diplomatic skills, his downfall owed as much to his personal insecurities and penchant for making enemies as it did to military failure. Using a variety of manuscript sources to tease Chatham from the records, this biography peels away the myths and places him for the first time in proper familial, political, and military context. It breathes life into a much-maligned member of one of Britain’s greatest political dynasties, revealing a deeply flawed man trapped in the shadow of his illustrious relatives.

Book excerpt: With the Netherlands overrun by French Republican forces, the British and Russian governments sent an allied army of 48,000 men under the Duke of York to liberate the country and restore the House of Orange. The largest operation mounted by Pitt's ministry during the French Revolutionary Wars, the amphibious expedition involved the first ever direct cooperation between British and Russian forces, embroiled the armies in five full-scale battles, and secured the capture of the Dutch fleet. As Britain's first major continental involvement since 1795, it played a part in shaping the early careers of many famous military commanders of the Napoleonic Wars. In the end, however, the campaign failed spectacularly. Its inglorious end provoked parliamentary outrage and led to diplomatic rupture between Britain and Russia. The Duke of York never commanded an army in the field again. This book examines British, French, Dutch and Russian sources to reveal a fascinating tale of intrigue, diplomatic skullduggery and daring action. Spies, politicians, sailors and soldiers all play a part in the exciting story of an expedition that made (and broke) reputations and tested alliances. It recounts in lavish detail the series of battles fought to liberate a people who showed little interest in being saved and explores the story behind the triumphs and failures of this forgotten campaign.
