Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern system-on-chip (SoC) design shows a clear trend toward integration of multiple processor cores on a single chip. Designing a multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSOC) requires an understanding of the various design styles and techniques used in the multiprocessor. Understanding the application area of the MPSOC is also critical to making proper tradeoffs and design decisions. Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chips covers both design techniques and applications for MPSOCs. Design topics include multiprocessor architectures, processors, operating systems, compilers, methodologies, and synthesis algorithms, and application areas covered include telecommunications and multimedia. The majority of the chapters were collected from presentations made at the International Workshop on Application-Specific Multi-Processor SoC held over the past two years. The workshop assembled internationally recognized speakers on the range of topics relevant to MPSOCs. After having refined their material at the workshop, the speakers are now writing chapters and the editors are fashioning them into a unified book by making connections between chapters and developing common terminology. *Examines several different architectures and the constraints imposed on them *Discusses scheduling, real-time operating systems, and compilers *Analyzes design trade-off and decisions in telecommunications and multimedia applications

Book excerpt: The history and present status (1965) of multiprocessing, multiprogramming, and timesharing are reviewed. It is concluded that, despite their diverse histories, these techniques are destined to be intertwined. Although the mechanical problems in operating systems that exploit these techniques have largely been solved and the difficult memory allocation problem is on the brink of solution, the important question of optimum operating system strategy in initiating, suspending, and terminating jobs is largely unexplored. Suggestions are made concerning models which might be suitable for both analytic and Monte-Carlo approaches to the optimization of operating system strategy and to the selection of optimum hardware mixes. An extensive bibliography is included. (Author).

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a huge amount of innovation in both the principles and practice of operating systems Over the same period, the core ideas in a modern operating system - protection, concurrency, virtualization, resource allocation, and reliable storage - have become widely applied throughout computer science. Whether you get a job at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or any other leading-edge technology company, it is impossible to build resilient, secure, and flexible computer systems without the ability to apply operating systems concepts in a variety of settings. This book examines the both the principles and practice of modern operating systems, taking important, high-level concepts all the way down to the level of working code. Because operating systems concepts are among the most difficult in computer science, this top to bottom approach is the only way to really understand and master this important material.

Book excerpt: This paper describes a multiprocessor operating system simulator that was developed by the authors in the Fall semester of 1987. The simulator was built in response to the need to provide students with an environment in which to build and test operating system concepts as part of the coursework of a third-year undergraduate operating systems course. Written in C++, the simulator uses the co-routine style task package that is distributed with the AT&T C++ Translator to provide a hierarchy of classes that represents a broad range of operating system software and hardware components. The class hierarchy closely follows that of the 'Choices' family of operating systems for loosely- and tightly-coupled multiprocessors. During an operating system course, these classes are refined and specialized by students in homework assignments to facilitate experimentation with different aspects of operating system design and policy decisions. The current implementation runs on the IBM RT PC under 4.3bsd UNIX. Johnston, Gary M. and Campbell, Roy H. Book excerpt: UNDERSTANDING OPERATING SYSTEMS provides a basic understanding of operating systems theory, a comparison of the major operating systems in use, and a description of the technical and operational tradeoffs inherent in each. The effective two-part organization covers the theory of operating systems, their historical roots, and their conceptual basis (which does not change substantially), culminating with how these theories are applied in the specifics of five operating systems (which evolve constantly). The authors explain this technical subject in a not-so-technical manner, providing enough detail to illustrate the complexities of stand-alone and networked operating systems. UNDERSTANDING OPERATING SYSTEMS is written in a clear, conversational style with concrete examples and illustrations that readers easily grasp.

Book excerpt: Operating System is the most essential program of all, without which it becomes cumbersome to work with a computer. It is the interface between the hardware and computer users making the computer a pleasant device to use. The Operating System: Concepts and Techniques clearly defines and explains the concepts: process (responsibility, creation, living, and termination), thread (responsibility, creation, living, and termination), multiprogramming, multiprocessing, scheduling, memory management (non-virtual and virtual), inter-process communication/synchronization (busy-wait-based, semaphore-based, and message-based), deadlock, and starvation. Real-life techniques presented are based on UNIX, Linux, and contemporary Windows. The book has briefly discussed agent-based operating systems, macro-kernel, microkernel, extensible kernels, distributed, and real-time operating systems. The book is for everyone who is using a computer but is still not at ease with the way the operating system manages programs and available resources in order to perform requests correctly and speedily. High school and university students will benefit the most, as they are the ones who turn to computers for all sorts of activities, including email, Internet, chat, education, programming, research, playing games etc. It is especially beneficial for university students of Information Technology, Computer Science and Engineering. Compared to other university textbooks on similar subjects, this book is downsized by eliminating lengthy discussions on subjects that only have historical value.
