Peer social behavior can be an especially challenging skill for children with autism. Interaction with peers is integral in the development of peer relationships, successful inclusion, membership, and the use of self-advocacy for these children. The purpose of this study was to implement an intervention to increase peer social behavior in inclusive preschool classrooms for three children diagnosed with autism. A multiple-baseline across participants design was implemented to determine if correspondence training was an effective intervention used to increase the participants' peer social behavior. A partial-interval recording system was used to record peer social behavior and teacher behavior. The results of this study demonstrated that correspondence training was effective in increasing each participant's peer social behavior. In addition, social validity data suggested that this intervention was minimally-intrusive, easily implemented in a classroom setting and possibly generalizable to additional settings.

Book excerpt: Copublished with Context Press Derived Relational Responding offers a series of revolutionary intervention programs for applied work in human language and cognition targeted at students with autism and other developmental disabilities. It presents a program drawn from derived stimulus relations that you can use to help students of all ages acquire foundational and advanced verbal, social, and cognitive skills. The first part of Derived Relational Responding provides step-by-step instructions for helping students learn relationally, acquire rudimentary verbal operants, and develop other basic language skills. In the second section of this book, you'll find ways to enhance students' receptive and expressive repertoires by developing their ability to read, spell, construct sentences, and use grammar. Finally, you'll find out how to teach students to apply the skills they've learned to higher order cognitive and social functions, including perspective-taking, empathy, mathematical reasoning, intelligence, and creativity. This applied behavior analytic training approach will help students make many substantial and lasting gains in language and cognition not possible with traditional interventions.

Book excerpt: Animal learning and human learning traditions have been distinguishable within psychology since the start of the discipline and are to this day. The human learning wing was interested in the development of psychological functions in human organisms and proceeded directly to their examination. The animal learning wing was not distinguished by a corresponding interest in animal behavior per se. Rather, the animal learners studied animal behavior in order to identify principles of behavior of relevance to humans as well as other organisms. The two traditions, in other words, did not differ so much on goals as on strategies. It is not by accident that so many techniques of modem applied psychol ogy have emerged from the animal laboratory. That was one of the ultimate purposes of this work from the very beginning. The envisioned extension to humans was not just technological, however. Many animal researchers, B. F. Skinner most prominently among them, recognized that direct basic research with humans might ultimately be needed in certain areas but that it was wise first to build a strong foundation in the controlled environment of the animal laboratory. In a sense, animal learning was always in part a human research program in development.

Book excerpt: Objective: The objective of this investigation was to determine the efficacy of using matrix training to teach generalization of the core word 'open', across verbal operants and activities. A 3x3 matrix was used across storybooks, playtime, and discrete trial teaching for mands, tacts, and verbal operants. Three participants, two males and one female, were recruited between the ages of 6-8 and were all functionally non-verbal. All three participants live in the Middle East and were from bilingual homes. Method: The investigation followed a multiple baseline across participants (MBAP) investigation with three participants. The baseline phase was followed by an intervention phase which utilized most to least errorless teaching for the matrix diagonal. The intervention phase was then followed by a generalization probe to see the effects of generalization across the matrix. Results: In analysis of the data, the statistical relevance is not significant. However, a slight increase in independent generalization across the verbal operants occurred across two of the three participants. Conclusion: In conclusion, generalization of core words, across verbal operants using matrix training resulted in minimal generalization across two of three participants. However, one of the participants was not introduced to the intervention due to session attendance. This is a primary limitation in the MBAP investigation. Other limitations identified include, extended duration of the investigation, changes in the baseline stability definition, and effects of challenging behavior. These, as well as other, limitations should be considered in replications of the present investigation.

This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current rates of autism diagnoses have been cause for concern and research as well as rumor and misinformation. Important questions surround the condition: how early can an accurate diagnosis be made? At what age should intervention start? How can parents recognize warning signs? And what causes autism in the first place? There are no easy answers, but the Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders gives researchers, practitioners, and academics the science and guidance to better understand and intervene. Background chapters survey the history of professional understanding of the disorders and the ongoing debate over autism as a single entity or a continuum. Chapters on best methods in screening, assessment, and diagnosis reflect the transition between the DSM-V and older diagnostic criteria. And at the heart of the book, the intervention section ranges from evidence-based strategies for developing core skills to ethical concerns, cultural considerations, and controversial treatments. Included in the Handbook's broad-based coverage: Designing curriculum programs for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Mainstream education for children with ASD. Teaching independent living skills to children with ASD. Social skills and play. Behavioral and mental health disorders in children with ASD. Training and supporting caregivers in evidence-based practices. Teaching cognitive skills to children with ASD. The Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders is a comprehensive reference for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians and other scientist-practitioners in clinical child and school psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry, social work, rehabilitation, special education, and pediatric medicine.
