Book excerpt: Dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) provide fundamental ecosystem functions and services, like nutrient cycling, bioturbation, secondary seed dispersal, parasite and fly control, and soil fertilization, but land use transformation, has negatively impacted their diversity and processes. For the last four decades, dung beetles have been used as one of the most crucial insect groups for analyzing and monitoring biodiversity in natural temperate and tropical ecosystems, and their anthropogenic ecosystem´s derivatives. Dung beetles seem to be declining mainly for the forest conversion to agrosystems and others ecosystems transformed by human activity in the Neotropical region. Our knowledge of the dung beetle responses to the transformation of their original habitat has increased over the last two decades in the Neotropical region. However, the knowledge on the taxonomy, ecology, biology, and the factors producing the anthropogenic activity on Neotropical dung beetles has not been met and analyzed in full. This Research Topic synthesizes the knowledge on the diversity, taxonomy, and biology of the dung beetle species in the Neotropical region. The structure of this Research Topic is composed of two sections. In the first section, articles may be original research papers or reviews on the knowledge of the dung beetles diversity in each country of the Neotropical region, including species diversity and their response to land use and habitat fragmentation. Articles on the second section may be original research papers or reviews on the following Research Topics: • Taxonomy of Neotropical dung beetles and their preservation in Institutional collections • The methodology used to analyze the spatial distribution and monitoring of dung beetles • The response of dung beetles to habitat loss and modification to the landscape in different countries and Neotropical biomes: Cloud forest, Tropical rain forest, Subtropical forest, Cerrado, Caatinga, Paramo, Pampa, Pantanal, and others • The physiological responses of dung beetles to anthropogenic disturbance in the Neotropics • The biology and reproductive behavior of Neotropical dung beetles • The genetics of Neotropical dung beetle • Dung beetle interaction with other species and its role as a secondary dispersal • The relationship between dung beetles and Mesoamerican cultures

Book excerpt: "Phylogenetic analyses and taxonomic revisions were conducted on the scarabaeoid family Hybosoridae. Two new subfamilies of Hybosoridae are described, Liparochrinae and Pachyplectrinae. Phylogenetic analysis and a through systematic revision of the New World subfamily Anaidinae are provided. The phylogenetic analyses of the family Hybosoridae, based on molecular data from the 28S D2 and D3 regions rDNA and 18S rDNA, support the monophyly of Hybosoridae. Five clades (referred to as subfamilies) comprise the Hybosoridae: Anaidinae, Ceratocanthinae, Hybosorinae, Liparochrinae (new subfamily), and Pachyplectrinae (new subfamily). As a result, the following family group names have new status: Anaidinae (previously considered a tribe) and Ceratocanthinae (previously considered a family). Phylogenetic analyses of the subfamily Anaidinae, based on 117 adult morphological characters, support the monophyly of the subfamily, which now includes six genera: Anaides, Callosides, Chaetodus, Cryptogenius, Hybochaetodus, and Totoia. Character states supporting clades of Anaidinae are discussed. Descriptions of all subfamilies of Hybosoridae are provided. Keys to genera and species of Anaidinae and synopses of all genera are provided. Two genera of Anaidinae are revised: Anaides and Chaetodus. The genus Anaides now includes 13 species, eight of which are new. The species A. reticulatus Endrödi is placed in synonymy with A. fossulatus Westwood. The genus Chaetodus now includes two subgenera and 32 species, 18 of which are new. The subgenus Pseudohybosorus Endrödi is placed in sysnonymy with Chaetodus Westwood. Pseudohybosorus drifti Endrödi and the subspecies Chaetodus amazonicus inesperatus Martínez are placed in synonymy with Chaetodus amazonicus de Borre. Chaetodus apicipennis Petrovitz is placed in synonymy with C. exaratus Arrow. Chaetodus striatus de Borre is placed in synonymy with C. irregularis Westwood. Book excerpt: The tribe Macrodactylini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) is reviewed from southern South America. A total of 13 genera and 33 species were found in the study area consisting of Argentina from Neuquén south and Chile from IV Región de Coquimbo south. The following three new genera are described: Extenuoptyophis, Insimuloissacaris, and Neuquenodactylus. The following 11 new species are described: Ampliodactylus elguetai, Ampliodactylus guinezi, Ampliodactylus inusitus, Ampliodactylus panguipullensis, Extenuoptyophis horridulus, Extenuoptyophis metropolitensis, Insimuloissacaris nahuelbutensis, Issacaris falsa, Issacaris sola, Neuquenodactylus ramus, and Phytholaema fenestra. The species Schizochelus modestus Philippi, 1861 is transferred to the genus Ampliodactylus. Lectotypes are designated for the following five species-group names (species names given in their original combination): Dicrania aeneobrunneaPhilippi, 1861, Modialis prasinella Fairmaire & Germain, 1860, Phytholaema elaphocera Redtenbacher, 1868, Phytholaema herrmanni Germain, 1901, and Schizochelus modestus Philippi, 1861. Neotypes are designated for the following four species-group names (species names given in their original combination): Acanthosternum splendens Philippi, 1861, Areoda mutabilis Solier, 1851, Issacaris petalophora Fairmaire, 1889, and Phytholaema flavipes Philippi, 1861. The genera Modialis Fairmaire & Germain, 1860 and Phytholaema Blanchard, 1851 are here transferred to the tribe Macrodactylini. The species-group names Phytholaema pallida Saylor, 1937 and Phytholaema peccans Blackwelder, 1944 are placed in synonymy with Phytholaema herrmanni Germain, 1901. Descriptions or diagnoses, keys, and distributional data are given for all species.
