Book excerpt: Sitting at the kitchen tables of twelve women in their eighties who were born in or immigrated to Montana in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, between 1982 and 1988 oral historian Donna Gray conducted interviews that reveal a rich heritage. In retelling their life stories, Gray steps aside and allows theses women with supposedly “nothing to tell” to speak for themselves. Pride, nostalgia, and triumph fill a dozen hearts as they realize how remarkable their lives have been and wonder how they did it all. Some of these women grew up in Montana in one-bedroom houses; others traveled in covered wagons before finding a home and falling in love with Montana. These raw accounts bring to life the childhood memories and adulthood experiences of ranch wives who were not afraid to milk a cow or bake in a wooden stove. From raising poultry to raising a family, these women knew the meaning of hard work. Several faced the hardships of family illness, poverty, and early widowhood. Through it all, they were known for their good sense of humor and strong sense of self.

Book excerpt: Eleven stunning stories that explore the most intimate and transforming moments of existence, from Nobel Prize–winning author Alice Munro, “one of the foremost practitioners of the short story” (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times). “Throughout this remarkable collection moments of insight flash from the pages like lightning, not necessarily providing answers—more like showing the way to new questions.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer A divorced woman returns to her childhood home where she confronts the memory of her parents’ confounding yet deep bond. The accidental near-drowning of a child exposes to the shaken mother the fragility between children and parents. A young man, remembering a terrifying childhood incident, wrestles with the responsibility he has always felt for his hapless younger brother. A man brings his lover on a visit to his ex-wife, only to feel unexpectedly closer to his estranged partner. In these and other stories, Alice Munro proves once again a sensitive and compassionate chronicler of our times. Drawing us into the most intimate corners of ordinary lives, she reveals much about ourselves, our choices, and our experiences of love.

Book excerpt: This true story of a Victorian-era young woman who follows her husband to a small town with the improbable name of Gilt Edge, Montana, will remind readers of Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose, the classic novel of a woman's life in the Mountain West. As a young girl, Lillian Weston, the author's grandmother, aspired to be a concert pianist. However, as a young woman in turn-of-the-century New York, she became a newspaper columnist. Her marriage to Frank Hazen took her west in 1899, ending her career as a newspaperwoman. She turned her writing skills to journals, diaries, stories, and poems, which traced her family's life on a frontier that was no longer unspoiled. The Hazens endured brutal winters and dry summers and endeavored to raise cattle and chickens by trial and error. Lillian was an assiduous diarist who included details of her turbulent marriage challenged by Frank's bad business deals. The details of birth control and child rearing, gambling and prostitution, education and health care are all part of this story, offering glimpses into everyday life that often go unreported in the larger story of western expansion.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Ninety-two in the Shade and Cloudbursts—the stories of Gallatin Canyon are rich in the wit, compassion, and matchless language for which Thomas McGuane is celebrated. Set mostly in famed Big Sky Country, McGuane brings us an "astonishing" (The New York Times Book Review) collection in which place exerts the power of destiny. A boy makes a surprising discovery skating at night on Lake Michigan; an Irish clan in Massachusetts gather around their dying matriarch; a battered survivor of the glory days of Key West washes up on other shores. Several of the stories unfold in Big Sky country: a father tries to buy his adult son’s way out of virginity; a convict turns cowhand on a ranch; a couple makes a fateful drive through a perilous gorge. McGuane's people are seekers, beguiled by the land's beauty and myth, compelled by the fantasy of what a locale can offer, forced to reconcile dream and truth.

Book excerpt: The story of Montana's one-room schoolhouses, as recollected and recounted by those most intimately connected to those places, is the story of the American frontier and the high value placed on education by those who came to homestead, mine, or work the railroads. It is a story of the Western spirit and of a culture marked by tenacity and endurance. These stories told by students and teachers, many of whom are now in their eighties or nineties tell of adventures traveling to and from school, the school day, recess games, family life, daily chores, and above all, the sense of community, as defined by these iconic humble schoolhouses. Their voices share memories and perspectives about a way of life, gone for the most part, and breathe life into these visions of rural heritage. The preservation of one-room schoolhouses is important, as they are among Montana's first frontier structures. These treasures inform us about ourselves our history and our culture through the people who learned and taught in them. One hundred percent of the net proceeds of this book will be donated to the Preserve Montana Fund, a campaign of collaboration between the Montana Preservation Alliance, the Montana History Foundation, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This donation will serve to create a challenge grant, earmarked for Montana's endangered one-room schoolhouses.

Book Synopsis As I Remember by : Gladys Mullet Kauffman

Book excerpt: In 1964, during Montana's territorial centennial year, Mrs. Morris (Gladys Mullet) Kauffman of Glendive, Montana noticed the dwindling number of pioneers who had settled Eastern Montana. Too many of them were taking their stories to the grave. Surely someone should record those stories! Of course, there was no 'someone' so Mrs. Kauffman, despite having nine children at home, undertook the task. During the next twelve years she interviewed over 160 of the early Eastern Montana pioneers and published their stories in Glendive's newspaper, the Ranger-Review, naming the column "As I Remember." Mrs. Kauffman, herself the daughter of early settlers, reflects her love of history and her affection for Eastern Montana in her writing. She vividly brings to life the colorful pioneer era as she retells the heartaches, joys, laughter, and hardships of those hardy settlers. As Mrs. Kauffman interviewed the old timers they related their experiences as they recalled them. Thus the name "As I Remember." The reader may notice variations in the different recollections, but we do not attempt to reconcile discrepancies. These stories are 'their' memories. In 1964 the Ranger-Review printed the first twenty-nine interviews, most of which were fairly short. As Mrs. Kauffman continued the project, she began drawing more memories out of those pioneers, and many of the later stories are considerably longer. In the latter half of this book, we have grouped the first twenty-nine stories together in chronological order as they were published. Although most of the stories were written by Mrs. Kauffman, a few were submitted in writing by others for inclusion in the original series. In this book we have not changed theoriginal submissions to conform to our format. The same applies to other sources, such as newspapers. These entries appear in italics. And now a note about language: The reader should keep in mind that these stories were recorded between 1964 and 1975 and reflect life experiences in the late 19th and early 20th century. These interviews are in the language of the time and no attempt has been made to 'update' the stories to conform to today's standards. In the back of the book, a glossary explains some terms and locations that may be unfamiliar to the reader. These terms are marked by an asterisk* in the book to indicate their inclusion in the glossary. Also in the back of the book is a list of all the interviews Mrs. Kauffman recorded between 1964 and 1975. Most of those stories not included in this book will appear in Volume II. Let "As I Remember" take you back to another era and also help you appreciate the times in which you live!
