Book excerpt: This is the opening volume of a series that represents the first modern, extensive study of the planktic foraminifera of the Late Cretaceous Age. This group of microscopical single-celled protistans are the most used in the biostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous successions, and, from this perspective, this book is of paramount importance for specialists in oil industry and academia. This first volume is dedicated to one iconic group of planktics, the globotruncanids. It describes 61 species that are grouped into thirteen genera, illustrating them with high-quality photographs that emphasize the spectacular morphology of this foraminiferal group. With emphasis on the test ultrastructures and high-detail morphological characters in concert with the features pertaining of the general test architecture, this work provides the most comprehensive perspective on this group of foraminifera. The work will provide specialists and students with a wealth of ready-to-use data in a wide array of applications, from biostratigraphy to evolution.

Book excerpt: This textbook will appeal to students and graduates making their first steps in the application of both microfossils and stratigraphy. It presents, in detail, the historical development of microfossil biostratigraphy, from its birth to the emergence of sequence stratigraphy, including its roots in classical biostratigraphy. The interplay between the academic and economical challenges, on one hand, and developments in microfossil biostratigraphy, on the other, is explored thoroughly. The book also presents an introduction to the scientific concepts used in microfossil biostratigraphy practice, and the uses in microbiostratigraphy of 25 groups of microfossils, such as algae, protistans, reproductive plant debris, invertebrates, chordates and vertebrates, and microproblematica groups. It also provides a numerical method to calculate the biostratigraphical resolution of these microfossil groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Eocene and the Eocene-Oligocene (E-O) transition mark the most profound oceanographic and climatic changes of the past 50 million years of Earth history, with cooling beginning in the middle Eocene and culminating in the major earliest Oligocene Oi-1 isotopic event. The Late Eocene is characterized by an accelerated global cooling, with a sharp temperature drop near the E-O boundary, and significant stepwise floral and faunal turnovers. These global climate changes are commonly attributed to the expansion of the Antarctic ice cap following its gradual isolation from other continental masses. However, multiple extraterrestrial bolide impacts, possibly related to a comet shower that lasted more than 2 million years, may have played an important role in deteriorating the global climate at that time. This book provides an up-to-date review of what happened on Earth at the end of the Eocene Epoch.

Book excerpt: Developing the evolutionary history and classification in the planktic foraminifera of the Late Cretaceous age also led to the proliferation of taxa names and an unprecedented expansion in terminology. This new data is spread out over several tens of articles published in international journals and books. Handbook of Late Cretaceous Planktic Foraminifera (Practical Classification, Biostratigraphy) brings a variety of this data into the practical field in a ready-to-use form. The species and genera of all the Cretaceous planktic foraminiferal groups are described and illustrated, and additional readings are recommended. Each species is dedicated to one of the 237 plates illustrated with high-quality scanning, electron microscope photographs. The large-sized illustrations are designed to allow the reader to connect quickly with the gross test architecture data with those pertaining to the wall ultrastructure, ornamentation, porosity and high detail morphological features of the test. Fossil material was collected from a variety of localities worldwide, but most of them are from sites in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. With higher than 95% of estimated coverage, the handbook is designed as a useful identification tool for a variety of professionals interested in using the Late Cretaceous planktic foraminifera. Revised stratigraphical ranges for all the 237 species are given in a chart calibrated on the classical Cretaceous Stage/Age scale in which the species are ordered by genus.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agglutinated foraminifera are among the most widely distributed and abundant groups of marine meiofauna in some environments (e. g. marshes, deep-sea). They are tolerant of environmental extremes, tending to live where the evolutionarily more advanced calcareous foraminifera cannot survive. However, largely because of historical reasons, the amount of scientific effort invested in this group has been small in comparison to studies of other marine organisms. The NATO Advanced Studies Institute conference on the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera in TUbingen September 17-29, 1989, was a direct outgrowth of two previous workshops on agglutinated foraminifers held in Amsterdam in September 1981 (IW AF I) and in Vienna in June 1986 (IW AF 11). As such, the TUbingen conference constitutes the Third International Workshop on Agglutinated Foraminifera (IW AF III) and was organised to provide a platform for synthesizing the current state of knowledge on this group of organisms, and to strengthen interactions between basic research and applied micropaleontology. One of the main underlying themes of the conferen:e was to identify topics in the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera which are in urgent need of further research. About 80 scientists and students from 5 continents participated in the TUbingen conference, which is one measure of the growth in interest in agglutinated foraminifers over the past decade. During four days of technical sessions, scientific results were communicated in the form of 34 oral presentations and 15 poster displays.

This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution and Geological Significance of Larger Benthic Foraminifera is a unique, comprehensive reference work on the larger benthic foraminifera. This second edition is substantially revised, including extensive re-analysis of the most recent work on Cenozoic forms. It provides documentation of the biostratigraphic ranges and palaeoecological significance of the larger foraminifera, which is essential for understanding many major oil-bearing sedimentary basins. In addition, it offers a palaeogeographic interpretation of the shallow marine late Palaeozoic to Cenozoic world. Marcelle K. BouDagher-Fadel collects and significantly adds to the information already published on the larger benthic foraminifera. New research in the Far East, the Middle East, South Africa, Tibet and Americas has provided fresh insights into the evolution and palaeographic significance of these vital reef-forming forms. With the aid of new and precise biostratigraphic dating, she presents revised phylogenies and ranges of the larger foraminifera. The book is illustrated throughout, with examples of different families and groups at the generic levels. Key species are discussed and their biostratigraphic ranges are depicted in comparative charts, which can be found at http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10047587/2/Charts.pdf.
