Book Synopsis The Scramjet Engine by : Corin Segal
Download or read book The Scramjet Engine written by Corin Segal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renewed interest in high-speed propulsion has led to increased activity in the development of the supersonic combustion ramjet engine for hypersonic flight applications. In the hypersonic regime the scramjet engine's specific thrust exceeds that of other propulsion systems. This book, written by a leading researcher, describes the processes and characteristics of the scramjet engine in a unified manner, reviewing both theoretical and experimental research. The focus is on the phenomena that dictate the thermo-aerodynamic processes encountered in the scramjet engine, including component analyses and flowpath considerations; fundamental theoretical topics related to internal flow with chemical reactions and non-equilibrium effects, high-temperature gas dynamics, and hypersonic effects are included. Cycle and component analyses are further described, followed by flowpath examination. Finally, the book reviews experimental and theoretical capabilities and describes ground testing facilities and computational fluid dynamics facilities developed for the study of time-accurate, high-temperature aerodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supersonic combustion ramjet or scramjet, is the most suitable engine cycle for sustained hypersonic flight in the atmosphere. The present work deals with the performance of a scramjet engine by parametrically analyzing the performance of the ideal scramjet using the engine parameters: specific thrust, fuel-to-air ratio, thrust specific fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, propulsive efficiency, overall efficiency and thrust flux. The objective of the work is to determine the desirable performance terms of the ideal scramjet, by varying three different candidate fuels and three different candidate materials for the combustion chamber. The engine parameters are related by the lower heating value (hPR) of the fuel and the maximum service temperature (Tmax) of the material. This convenient mathematical equations are development for ideal scramjet performance. The knowledge offered on this work has not been achieved by using others within the scientific literature.

Download or read book Facilities for Scramjet Improvement written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The description of TSNIIMASH facilities for improvement of scramjet inlets and combustion chambers is presented. For research of inlets it is offered to use a large-scale hypersonic wind tunnel U - 306-3 working at Mach numbers 2 3 4, 6, 8, 10 with a nozzle-exit diameter of 1,2 m. The description of this facility activity scheme and its basic distinctive parameters are given. It is marked, that the facility Y - 306-3 can be used to test large-scale models and model flying velocities and dynamic head for different altitudes. For analysis of hydrogen - air or hydrocarbon - air mixtures supersonic combustion in scramjet combustion chambers is offered to use a special test-bed on the basis of facility U - 12 modernization. The test-bed includes the pressure vessel of a variable volume, succeeded hypersonic nozzles on Mach numbers 4, 6, 8, 10, combustion chamber, exit nozzle and exhaust system. The maximal pressure in the pressure vessel can reach 50 MPa. The combustion chamber has the cylindrical shape with an interior diameter of 0.5 m and length of 9 m. It allows to test real injection systems during tests. The system of an exhaust includes a gas holder with diameter of 3.2 m and volume of 180 squared m. She also is equipped with potent vacuum pumps, which one can create rarefaction ^ 1 Pa for rather short time. The problems of scramjet creation are analyzed, which one can be resolved on the facilities.

Book Synopsis Analysis of Scramjet with MHD Bypass by :
Download or read book Analysis of Scramjet with MHD Bypass written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propositions to use the MHD systems to control flow in a scramjet channel were put forward in development of the "M AJAX" concept. The paper 1, in which the basic principles for the MHD control in a scramjet were described for the first time in detail, was published in 1998. The main emphasis in the paper was put on analyzing the scramjet scheme with the control system composed of the MHD generator located upstream of the combustion chamber and the MHD accelerator located downstream of the combustion chamber, see the Fig. 1. The "Magneto Plasma Chemical Engine" title was used in the paper for designation of the engine. At present the title "Scramjet with MHD bypass" is frequently used for the engine designation. Perhaps the title is more obvious met to the scheme. It was shown in the paper 1 that the MHD bypass in a scramjet allows one to increase the scramjet specific impulse. In addition the functional relation which determines requirements for the engine subsystems, at which the MHD bypass leads to increasing the scramjet specific impulse, is obtained in the paper 1. In the subsequent papers 2-5 the propulsion was analyzed in more complicated physical model taking into account the problems of creation of nonequilibrium conductivity of flow in the MHD generator channel. In the papers the requirements for parameters of the magnetic system, the ionizer, the MHD generator and the scramjet, at which the MHD bypass increases the scramjet specific impulse, are formulated. Despite of the considerable progress in investigation of the propulsion the results obtained in 1.5 don't establish clearly the reason which is responsible for increase the scramjet specific impulse due to the MHD control. Probably the not full clarity of results obtained in the papers 1-5 is caused in the first place by the non-traditional approach 6, which is very useful for the system analysis but does not give the clearness of the results obtained, was used for the MHD systems7.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Computational Analyses of Complete Scramjet Engine Modules by :
Download or read book Dynamic Computational Analyses of Complete Scramjet Engine Modules written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research performed during this period has produced and demonstrated all of the required codes, algorithms and technology needed to analyze dynamically scramjet propulsion modules, both singly and ganged. Cold-flow unstart of a generic hydrocarbon-fuel configuration (tested at NASA langley) due to nozzle backpressure and angle of attack change have been obtained and animated for analysis. An inlet isolator combuster hydrogen fueled configuration tested at the National Aerospace Laboratory in Japan has been simulated synamically and analysed to determine the cause of flow path destabililzation. Finally, an algorithm to allow dynamic adaptation of adjacent blocks has been developed to allow resolution of all of the physics while maintaining conservation between blocks. The codes have not yet been integrated. Follow-on funding will be sought to do so.
