Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has made this treatise on Madhva’s realistic school of Ved?nta philosophy convincing to the modern mind by employing western logical apparatus in substantiating Madhva’s ideas. Following the Indian classical tradition, the author has examined the validity of Advaitaved?nta, the Absolute Monism of ?a?kara and Bh?skara as P?rvapak?a, and logically proved its inconsistencies. He has then established the Dvaitasiddh?nta i.e., the Monotheistic Dualism of Madhva. He has successfully brought out the nuances of the realistic school of Indian philosophical thought in this work. A Modern Introduction to M?dhva Philosophy is Prof B H Kotabagi’s posthumous publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The spiritual homelessness of modern man cannot last long,’ thus believed Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975), a prominent philosopher, educationalist, and one of the makers of modern India. His solution to the problems of humanity is a return to the religion of spirit, to be achieved through the right kind of education. Radhakrishnan advocated a sound educational philosophy aimed at harmonious development of the human personality, with utmost emphasis on moral and spiritual education. This book effectively presents Radhakrishnan’s thoughts, highlighting their relevance to the present day. The author has at length discussed Indian philosophy in comparison with the Western thought and successfully established that the East-West synthesis as propagated by Radhakrishnan is the need of the hour to arrest the self-destructive tendency of the world and ensure development and peace. Readers will also get an account of Radhakrishnan’s life story in the backdrop of the political history of pre and post-Independent India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a good presentation of the philosophy of Sri Madhvacarya, complete in its architectonic unity. The author probes its ontological and epistemological foundations, and critcally examines the structure erected on them. The discussion focuses on crucial doctrines of theism, and brings to light for the first time the striking parallelisms of thought between Madhva and his Western contemporary St. Thomas Aquinas. Light is also thrown on how Madhva and his commentators anticipated the views of modern philosophers like Spencer, Russell and Hobhouse on the nature of time, space and memory. The latest researches on Madhvacarya's role in the Vedantic Bhakti movement and his attempt to harmonize the Upanisadic texts on monism and dualism are substantially drawn upon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The philosophy of Madhva is one of those systems of Indian philosophy which rose in revolt against the Absolute Monism of Samkara and his School and in this endeavour constructed a pluralistic and realistic system of Ultimate Reality based on the solid foundations of theism. His was an attempt to strengthen the old Vaishnavite tradition with a philosophical structure that believes in the absolute reality of every object of experience, accords to experience a supreme status as an instrument of knowledge, maintains the absolute reality of difference, considers both Self and Matter as different from God who is the instrumental cause of creation, sustenance, destruction and control of the world order and thus prescribes devotion and surrender to God as the means of achieving emancipation. All these problems of philosophy have been thoroughly discussed here. The author has systematically compared the Madhva position with the rival Advaita School to justify the validity of Sri Madhva's philosophical standpoint along with a comprehensive account of Madhva ontology. The author says: In his epistemological analysis Madhva's die-hard realism is the reason of his uncompromising pluralism which stands a good comparison to some of the striking conclusions in contemporary Western Realism. Madhva's theistic approach and his emphasis on the doctrine of Grace and Surrender have much in common with some of the important tenets of Christianity and has an important place in the history of religion and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deepak Sarma completes the first outline in more than fifty years of India's key philosophical traditions, inventively sourcing seminal texts and clarifying language, positions, and issues. Organized by tradition, the volume covers six schools of orthodox Hindu philosophy: Mimamsa (the study of the earlier Vedas, later incorporated into Vedanta), Vedanta (the study of the later Vedas, including the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads), Sankhya (a form of self-nature dualism), Yoga (a practical outgrowth of Sankhya), and Nyaya and Vaisesika (two forms of realism). It also discusses Jain philosophy and the Mahayana Buddhist schools of Madhyamaka and Yogacara. Sarma maps theories of knowledge, perception, ontology, religion, and salvation, and he details central concepts, such as the pramanas (means of knowledge), pratyaksa (perception), drayvas (types of being), moksa (liberation), and nirvana. Selections and accompanying materials inspire a reassessment of long-held presuppositions and modes of thought, and accessible translations prove the modern relevance of these enduring works.

The balanced coverage, accessible content, and breadth of approaches presented in this anthology make it a valuable resource for students of Chinese Philosophy, Comparative Philosophy, and other related courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a much-needed thematic and historical introduction to Hinduism, the religion of the majority of people in India. Dr Flood traces the development of Hindu traditions from their ancient origins, through the major deities of Visnu, Siva and the Goddess, to the modern world. Hinduism is discussed as both a global religion and a form of nationalism. Emphasis is given to the tantric traditions, which have been so influential; to Hindu ritual, which is more fundamental to the life of the religion than are specific beliefs or doctrines; and to Dravidian influences from south India. An Introduction to Hinduism examines the ideas of dharma, particularly in relation to the ideology of kingship, caste and world renunciation. Dr Flood also introduces some debates within contemporary scholarship about the nature of Hinduism. It is suitable both for the student and for the general reader.

Written in lucid style it presents a vigorous and sparkling historical exposition of the mighty currents of Realistic Theism, originating in the Vedic and post-Vedic sources of Madhva philosophy finding their culmination in the Dvaita Vedanta of Madhvacarya, and the long line of his great commentators and followers, over a period of seven centuries from the thirteenth century onwards.
