Book excerpt: A three-phase model is presented that predicts solid deformation and damage as well as melt pressure, feeding flow, and shrinkage porosity. A viscoplastic constitutive theory with damage is used to model the solid deformation. Damage is a scalar quantity based on ductile fracture theory which is calculated from the inelastic volume deformation. This associative model smoothly transitions from rate-dependent behaviour at high temperatures to rate-independent behaviour at lower temperatures. The damage created by mechanically induced voiding is proposed as a new hot tear criterion. Hot tears are believed to initiate from locations with significant damage. The liquid feeding and shrinkage porosity is coupled to the solid deformation which enables the final damage prediction to be more accurate than previous hot tear criteria. This model has been successfully implemented in a general-purpose casting simulation code. Novel steel casting experiments have been designed and performed which measure the deformation and force from solidification to shakeout. Under certain experimental conditions, hot tears form in the test castings and the deformation and force during hot tear formation is also measured. The measured and predicted deformations and forces show good agreement with the simulation results. Furthermore, the damage predictions show good correspondence with hot tear indications on radiographs of the test castings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique approach to integrated high-temperature process modelling, intended to serve as a design aid for new metal processing technologies. The second edition has been substantially expanded to include new content such as: a new algorithm and test results of 3D stereoscopic visualization; new programming procedures for modelling; the validation of computer simulation using experimental results; a multiscale model of grain growth; a conceptual methodology developing “high-temperature” CCT (continuous cooling transformation) diagrams, and many more examples validating the numerical simulations. The models presented are applied in comprehensive tests in order to solve problems related to the high-temperature deformation of steel. The testing methods include both physical tests using specialist laboratory instruments, and advanced mathematical modelling: the Finite Element method (FE), Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method (SPH) and Mo nte Carlo method (MC).This approach, which integrates the fields of physical and computer-based simulations, forms the basis for the described concept of integrated high-temperature process modelling, presented in detail in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Aided Engineering may be defined as an approach to solving tech nological problems in which most or all of the steps involved are automated through the use of computers, data bases and mathematical models. The success of this ap proach, considering hot forming, is tied very directly to an understanding of material behaviour when subjected to deformation at high temperatures. There is general agreement among engineers that not enough is known about that topic -and this gave the initial impetus for the project described in the present study. The authors secured a research grant from NATO (Special Research Grant #390/83) with a mandate to study the "State-of-the-Art of Controlled Rolling". What follows is the result of that study. There are five chapters in this Monograph. The first one, entitled "State-of-the Art of Controlled Rolling" discusses industrial and laboratory practices and research designed to aid in the development of microalloyed steels of superior quality. Follow ing this is the chapter "Methods of Determining Stress-Strain Curves at Elevated Temperatures". The central concern here is the material's resistance to deformation or in other words, its flow strength, the knowledge of which is absolutely essential for the efficient and economical utilization of the computers controlling the rolling process.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses results of experimental research and a model implementation of the hot deformation process in the two-phase region under high strain rate. Hot compression tests were employed to determine the behavior of deformed microalloyed steel over a range of strain rates (1 x 10−3 s−1 - 2.5 x 103 s−1) and temperatures (650 C - 850 C). The thermomechanical history of the material is consequently integrated in the simulation and compared with the experimental results.

Book excerpt: Solidification is one of the oldest processes for producing complex shapes for applications ranging from art to industry, and remains as one of the most important commercial processes for many materials. Since the 1980s, numerous fundamental developments in the understanding of solidification processes and microstructure formation have come from both analytical theories and the application of computational techniques using commonly available powerful computers. This book integrates these developments in a comprehensive volume that also presents and places them in the context of more classical theories. This second edition highlights the key concepts within each chapter to help guide the reader through the most important aspects of the topics. The figures are now in color, in order to improve the visualization of phenomena and concepts. Recent important developments in the field since the first edition was published have also been added. The three-part text is aimed at graduate and professional engineers. The first part, Fundamentals and Macroscale Phenomena, presents the thermodynamics of solutions and then builds on that subject to motivate and describe equilibrium phase diagrams. Transport phenomena are discussed next, focusing on the issues of most importance to liquid-solid phase transformations, then moving on to describing in detail both analytical and numerical approaches to solving such problems. The second part, Microstructure, employs these fundamental concepts for the treatment of nucleation, dendritic growth, microsegregation, eutectic and peritectic solidification, and microstructure competition. This part concludes with a chapter describing the coupling of macro- and microscopic phenomena in microstructure development. The third and final part describes various types of Defects that may occur, with emphasis on porosity, hot tearing and macrosegregation, presented using the modeling tools and microstructure descriptions developed earlier.

Book excerpt: In a career spanning almost six decades, Prof. John T. Berry has made significant contributions towards building our understanding of solidification and process-structure-property relationships in shaped castings. Celebrating his contributions, the Fourth International Shape Casting Symposium, which takes place at the 2011 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition, has been organized in his honor. Shape Casting 2011 contains the proceedings of the symposium in which scientists and engineers from around the world presented their own research findings, discussed challenges in the field, and projected future directions. Papers explore such topics as liquid metal quality; filling and feeding systems; process modeling for shaped castings; structure-property relationships; performance of shaped castings; and machinability of castings.

Most common, analyses of the resistance of welded components against failure are targeted at crack avoidance. Such evaluations are increasingly carried out by modern weldability studies, i. e. considering interactions between the selected base and filler materials, structural design and welding process. Such weldability investigations are particularly targeted to prevent hot cracking, as one of the most common cracking phenomena occurring during weld fabrication. To provide an international information and discussion platform to combat hot cracking, an international workshop on Hot Cracking Phenomena in Welds has been created, based on an initiative of the Institute for Materials and Joining Technology at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg and the Division V. 5 – Safety of Joined Components at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, Germany. The first workshop was organized in Berlin under the topics mechanisms and phenomena, metallurgy and materials, modelling and simulations as well as testing and standardization. It consisted of 20 individual contributions from eight countries, which were compiled in a book that found a very ready market, not only in the welding community. As a consequence of increasing interest, it has been decided to establish the Workshop on Hot Cracking Phenomena in Welds as a regular event every three years embedded in the International Institute of Welding (IIW). Attached to the IIW Commission IX and II Spring intermediate meetings, the second workshop was organized in March 2007.
