The men in the trenches had laid with their flesh and blood a road to Utopia but_ the officials refused to follow in its direction, and in: stead blocked it up and took the other way. That silly notion that existed and was fostered that the men who fought would determine the character of the nation has vanished. They had aglimpse of justice and brotherhood but their own cities smothered the vision in their eyes. The cities told them to take a commonsense view of things while so much unrest was in the world. And the commonsense point of view was not to disturb the old order. But the old order was passing, which the officials would not believe, and the new that was coming to birth was in travail. Govern ments have got to be just or governments will fall is the last warning of democracy. At the heart of reconstruction Is that insistent note. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Eighty Seven Poets: Representing American Verse From 1900 to 1919 In these stirring and tremendous times the American public library has many opportunities for service. Among these one of the highest is that of introducing to their fellowmen those artists who through the printed word interpret human life, and hold aloft the torch of the ideal. To be chosen, therefore, as the official agency for advertising the wares of such American poets as have earned the approval of the Poetry Society of America is both an honor and a peculiarly happy opportunity for continuing our work as promoters of good reading. What the Syracuse Reprint Is Toward the close of 1913 the Poetry Society of America, through a committee selected from its officers and members, made a list of such books of American contemporary poetry as could in their opinion be recommended for purchase by libraries both public and private and for reading and study by all who desired to keep in touch with poetic movements in this country. The list of that year was printed in the columns of the Library Journal for February, 1914. This first of our Library Lists was extended to cover more or less perfectly the years from 1900 to 1913. Librarians were at that time noting the awakened interest in our own native poetry, and there was a call for the publication of like Lists in the years that followed. The Library Journal continuing its hospitality, the Lists hereafter were made every December and were given to the public in the February following. After a while the Syracuse Public Library, through the interest of its chief librarian, Paul M. Paine, reprinted those Lists in its Bulletin and through these reprints the Lists have reached a still wider usefulness. The List that follows here is a restated and somewhat condensed arrangement of all these Lists, thus including volumes from 1900 to 1919. It has been carefully arranged, the titles and publishers are named, a note of appreciation and a short quotation are given with each author. In this form it is hoped that the Syracuse Reprint will meet a wide need among people who feel the necessity to know the poetry of today and among those who do not but would if they realized how much more there is of it and how vital a thing it is at the present moment. It should be understood by all users of this List that the Committee distinctly disclaim definitive judgments upon the ultimate value of the books chosen. They simply present to poetry lovers and to all who believe expression in poetry (as well as in the other arts) to be essential to our national development, a guide to present-day trends in poetry - a means of finding out what is happening in our own poetic realm. One would say that the people who wish to be fairly well read in our national literature should know at least these among the many hundreds of volumes of native poetry that might be annually urged upon them. The effort has been made to include books that show finished artistry, fresh impulses, some real contribution of new born thought, some fresh inspiration illuminating old thought, or some bold and noble dash that comes from the depths of a soul intensely native and innately chaste. To be sure omissions of valued books sometimes occur. Not all books of poetry are published by well-known publishers. Out-of-the-way printers often get hold of a gem of purest ray serene. Hence the Committee are glad to receive suggestions from any source as to privately-printed or other books of verse that might otherwise escape their attention. Address the Chairman of the Committee, Mrs. Martha Foote Crow, 16 Morningside Avenue, New York City. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry of to-Day: The Poetry Review New Verse Supplement; March-April, 1919 AS the cosmos is of light and shade, SO is life, microscopic human life, of esh and spirit, and it is to the spirit that is dormant, almost beaten out of their weary lives, that the appeal must be. The arts do not play any part in lives such as these, lacking not only this world's good but leisure to devote to beauty, and lacking also the divine impetus born in each but triumphantly strangled by the twin devils of need for belly and back. Indeed it were wondrous were it other, for until the carnal is satisfied there can be no spiritual, the base is SO much stronger than the noble. And it is therefore a difficult matter to bring beauty to those whose life can know no art; but one of the arts is universal in its appeal. In the midst Of even such sorrow laden Spots Spring up the theatre and the music-hall, and by an inspiration no less than that of less practical but more wordy visionaries, Miss Baylis has ada ted the theatre to her purpose. There in the midst of ife in its most sterile form is her theatre. There the noblest works of our language are played before the crudest audiences; there the most beautiful of Operas are performed; and there will be found a constant and appreciative attendance of those starved in soul to whom this is the most satisfying pabulum. Of this audience it was said by one who grinned, Here you will hear new, delightful and quite just criticism of play and players. Those people have no knowledge Of Shakespeare as a lesson learned by rote at school, and there fore hateful. They are surprising in the depth of their acquaintance with the plays, and know much more of them than you or I, and moreover they take it all with an intense seriousness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Poetry: An Anthology From 1866 to 1880 the United States was in a chaotic and frankly materialistic condition; it was full of political scandals, panics, frauds, malfeasance in high places. The moral fiber was flabby; the country was apathetic, cor rupt and contented. As in all such periods of national unconcern, the artists turned from life altogether, pre occupying themselves with the by-products of art: with method and technique, with elaborate and artificial con ceits, with facile ideas rather than fundamental ideals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1920: And Year Book of American Poetry Recent American poetry is to recent British poetry somewhat as New York is to London. Its colors are higher and gayer and more diverse; its outlines are more jagged and more surprising; its surfaces glitter and flash as British poetical surfaces do not always do, though its substances are often not so solid or so downright as the British. Nowhere in America have we a poet of the deep integrity of Thomas Hardy, a poet so rooted in ancient soil, ancient manners, ancient dialect. Nor has England a poet shining from so many facets as Amy Lowell, or a poet resounding with such a clang of cymbals - now gold, now iron - as Vachel Lindsay. Experiment thrives better here than there; at least, our adventurers in verse, when they go out on novel quests for novel beauties, are less likely than the British to be held in by steadying tradition, and they bring back all sorts of gorgeous plunder considerably nearer in hue and texture to the flaming shop-windows of Fifth Avenue than to those soberer ones of Bond and Regent Streets. Even John Masefield, most brilliant living poet of his nation, runs true to British form, grounded in Chaucer and Crabbe, fragrant with English meadows, salt with England's sea.
